Stop Voter ID Video

by: Burnt Orange Report

Wed Apr 18, 2007 at 06:37 PM CDT

Kuff had the video -- we share it with you below:

You can read the NY Times investigative piece that is referenced in the video here, and the following New York Times editorial as well (PDF links, for the sake of permanence).

As Burka wrote earlier this week, "From Greg Abbott on down, Rs should be ashamed of themselves for pursuing this anti-small-d-democratic bill." Royal Masset -- a loyal, longtime reader and respected Republican consultant --  hates this bill.

We've written previously on how this issue is pure partisanship. We've let you know this is nothing but vote suppression.

There is no question. There are no half-truths. These voter ID bills are absolute partisanship at it's absolute worst. Next week, they're up in the House. You know what to do.

Feinstein asks for all communications from EAC regarding partisan editing of "Voter Fraud" report (0.00 / 0)
Feinstein Asks for All EAC Communications Processes concerning Voter Fraud

...Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) sent a letter to Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA), Chairwoman of the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, which has oversight over the EAC, "expressing his concern over the revelations and asking her to examine the process by which the EAC report was produced. Menendez maintains that the use of the EAC to advance a political agenda is a blow to the integrity of the electoral system and that an investigation into the motivations behind the panel's report is warranted."

LATE UPDATE: Feinstein sends letter of inquiry on these matters to EAC, demanding all communications and processes leading to the alteration and/or hiding of both the EAC's "Voter Fraud" report and the report showing that Voter ID laws depress voter turnout.

................

Perhaps the leadership of MoveOn, PFAW, and Common Cause are still offering their support for Holt's HR 811 flawed bill, despite their membership's preferences, because they are waiting for the Senate to act first.

...............

But, people need to contact their representatives, in order to:

END the EAC
(Keep the unitary executive OUT of elections)

BAN DREs
(The Holt bill supports them)

END SECRET COUNTS
(Currently 85+% of our votes are counted in secret, with no citizen oversight)

For observably honest elections without the e-voting machines which can be gamed in primaries and in the general election, Rep. Burnam offers HB 3894:

"I think it goes too far. If I'm going to err I'm going to err on the side of individual civil liberties."

"I think it is not wise to limit the voice of the elderly and the disabled."
Representative Debbie Riddle.

Both are co-authors of HB218

Worst use of the Battlestar Galactica Theme song EVER!

Bad stuff (the bill and usage of a beautiful tv theme song)

Battlestar Galactica theme and series are both great (0.00 / 0)
I really hate waiting until 2008 for new episodes.

I think we can forgive the use of the music for a good cause.

But I think Naishtat (my campus representative) and Bolton (my parents representative and my former representative) are save votes against this.

It doesn't hurt to call (0.00 / 0)
Your representatives need to hear from you.  Do you have relatives in other parts of the state?  Ask them to call their representatives too.

Aggressive effort to restrict voter turnout (0.00 / 0)
McClatchy Newspapers article 4/18
Administration pursued aggressive legal effort to restrict voter turnout
(snip)
The administration, however, has repeatedly invoked allegations of widespread voter fraud to justify tougher voter ID measures and other steps to restrict access to the ballot, even though research suggests that voter fraud is rare.

Since President Bush's first attorney general, John Ashcroft, a former Republican senator from Missouri, launched a "Ballot Access and Voter Integrity Initiative" in 2001, Justice Department political appointees have exhorted U.S. attorneys to prosecute voter fraud cases, and the department's Civil Rights Division has sought to roll back policies to protect minority voting rights.

On virtually every significant decision affecting election balloting since 2001, the division's Voting Rights Section has come down on the side of Republicans, notably in Florida, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Washington and other states where recent elections have been decided by narrow margins.

It's a very long article but a worthwhile read.  Nice to see the issue is getting some national attention too.

Bills Officially Set For Monday (0.00 / 0)
The two voter ID bills have officially been set on the Monday calendar for consideration in the House.  Call your Reps and demand that they preserve your right to vote.
