Ben Barnes for U.S. Senate?

by: Matt Glazer

Mon Apr 09, 2007 at 04:57 PM CDT

Rumors are circulating with a possible entry into the race for U.S. Senate.  It's not former candidates Barbara Radnofsky or Chris Bell.  It is not a currently elected official like Bill White, Pete Gallego or Rick Noriega.

It is Democratic lightning rod and former Lt Gov of Texas and Texas Speaker of the House. Ben Barnes.

Right now Quorum Report is the only news or blog buzzing with this rumor, but where Quorum starts many will soon follow.

A meeting was supposedly held in recent days where supporters pitched Barnes. Dollar amounts for a campaign were discussed. The consensus was that it would take $25 million to do the job and, according to one of our sources, supporters at the meeting committed to $10 million. By himself, Barnes is credited with being able to write a seven-figure check. Besides his own personal wealth, Barnes is one of the national Democrats' leading fund-raisers.

Barnes is an interesting "choice" for the Democratic option for U.S. Senate.  His career was originally ended in the early 1970's because of the Sharpstown  Scandal

His recent transgrations include his love for Republican women and more importantly, his love in funding them.

Barnes was one of eight people who raised half a million dollars, so his pockets are deep.  The real question is whether democratic voters in a democratic primary will forgive both Sharpstown and raising $20 million for gubernatorial candidate and former republican and democrat Carole Keeton Strayhorn.

Texas Nate has a recent interview with Lt Gov Barnes. At the time of the interview, it struck me that Barnes, a strict institutionalist, embraced blogs at all.

Philip Martin subtly shows the difference between Barnes idea with the netroots manifesto, "Crashing the Gates".

"Crashing the Gate" - The Bible for progressive bloggers, CTG is an extraordinarily enlightening read, and an interesting one given the events of the November elections. If you ever want to know why bloggers spend so much free time toiling away at their computers, read this book. As a side note, I should mention that the Texas Netroots are raising money to buy every member of the Texas SDEC and TDP a copy of Crashing the Gate. Learn more about that effort here. 4 out of 5, strongly recommended.

"Barn Burning, Barn Building" - A personal memoir and political history, Ben Barnes writes an interesting book on the history of Texas Democrats. Chapters that detail the tragedy of President Kennedy and the rise of President Johnson, not to mention the Sharpstown scandal, are an excellent primer for those who love to learn the history of Texas politics. Though the closing chapters and recommendations are the same advice everyone has offered ad nauseum, the book is an enlightening view of what Texas Democrats once were. 3 out of 5, recommended.

As Philip hints, Barnes is about history and classic strategies. Barnes is known for loving current institutions and running to the center to win traditional voters.  This is a nice way of saying he is not known for using new technology, new tactics, or mobilizing new voters.

Regardless of whether Barnes is really in, the Barnes Buzz continues to show how vulnerable Cornyn is.  Why would Barnes eye the race if Cornyn couldn't be defeated?

This brings the possible candidate list to John Sharp, Barbara Radnofsky, Nick Lampson, Bill White, Rick Noriega, Pete Gallego, Ron Kirk, and Ben Barnes.

Your support today makes a difference tomorrow.  Donate.

Update: Chron blog has Barnes on record saying he is not interested in a Senate race.  The plot thickens.

Is it at all likely that this group of "Democratic muckety-mucks" would chip in the $10 million, even if the eventual nominee isn't Barnes?

Also, how common is it for a politican that is 70 and had a bright career (even what some might have seen as a potential path to the White House) brought down by scandal, run to become a freshman Senator?  Not saying that this won't end up happening, just curious if, even though he could self-fund, he would be the best political bet to challenge Cornyn with.

Regardless, this race is indeed getting more interesting.

Kerry and Killian (0.00 / 0)
That would motivate diehard Republicans to help out Barnes.

Granted, Cornyn probably won't need a lot of help. But he could rally whatever diehards exist by mentioning that Barnes was a top Kerry fundraiser and that he claimed that Bush was put into the TANG with his help (indirectly leading to them mentioning Dan Rather and the Killian memos)

Barnes has a lot of baggage (Sharpstown, lobbying). And that baggage isn't for the right reasons.

since we haven't shot ourselves in the foot in a while.... (5.00 / 1)
we should nominate Barnes.

He is quite possibly the only candidate I can think of besides Tony Sanchez that would equally offend both Rs and Ds.

I was privy to a conversation late last week of a particular trial lawyer that is actively raising funds (in HUGE increments) to be sent to the DSCC to run ads in support of our eventual nominee--regardless of who it is.

Call me cynical, but I'll wager that these folks already have someone in mind, and that not just ANY D would qualify to receive the funds.

Sharp==hasn't been around a lot and did some Perry stuff, but is a proven vote getter who doesn't scare the rednecks and (if he runs a different style of campaign than he has in the past) can win.

Radnofsky==tried, failed, sock puppet.

Lampson==isn't he in the hospital?

White==might be hard for the former D party chair to attract swing voters.

Noriega==nice profile, but is he even interested? Primary timeline might mean that he and his very capable spouse would be on a nonstop campaign trail for 2 years??

Gallego==virtually unknown outside of Alpine and the D activist network.  Too liberal for swing/ind voters??

Ron Kirk==bigfoot and Elvis have been seen at more D events than Ron Kirk since 2002.  How 'bout we go find Paul Hobby and dust him off.

Is there no young, energetic D that can energize us and create an actual option to Cornyn for ind/swing voters?

We're spinning the same old records expecting them to shoot up the charts with a bullet AGAIN.

Good to hear... (0.00 / 0)
It's extremely encouraging to hear that this person is sending in money to the DSCC, regardless of who the nominee is.  Did this person give out any names of possible candidates, indicating who he personally wants as the nominee?  That would be interesting, however, I am sure you couldn't divulge that info, lol.

And I tend to agree w/ your candidate analysis, although I am holding out hope that Noriega will show some signs of being interested (post-lege session, I'm sure).

supposedly there is no name as of yet (0.00 / 0)
The person I know was asked to write a check for $100k and was allegedly one of several that agreed to do so. He doesn't have a dog in the hunt, but thought they learned a lesson on Chris Bell that if they can assure a candidate that there is an actual benefit to winning the nomination...more people might be interested in doing it.

As I (and I imagine many others) see it, there are all of the promises by the party to step up for the General...but if they don't, Joe Candidate gets hung out to dry.

Why do you feel the need... (0.00 / 0)
to go through the list and just say no no no.

There are some very interesting names circulating, and a lot of them have incredible strengths that we haven't seen in a while.

Big money interests, national interest, grassroots support, a proven history, leadership, experience, diversity, etc.

Keep your eyes open because we are working on a site to inform everyone of all the candidates and show how bad Cornyn is at the same time.

Defeating Cornyn is a possibility and were you see nothing but weakness, I see a lot of opportunity.

Matt... (0.00 / 0)
I feel the same as you that there are many candidates being discussed that I could get excited about and definitely don't want to come across as being dismissive.  However, I do agree that Barnes could prove to be a disaster, BAR would be great going for a Supreme slot or AG (even a Lege run?), White seems destined for governor, Lampson is our best shot to keep that seat, and Sharp might be too inclined to run a campaign in a similar vein as his last few tries.  I'm not going to hide the fact that I would most prefer a Noriega or Gallego candidacy, but do believe that there are many great qualities about several of the names being bandied about.  Ultimately, I think we all can agree that defeating Cornyn is the main goal and it actually seems doable, but nominating someone in the same mold of some of our previous statewides could prove disastrous...again.
And now I am starting to feel like your comment was intended for colin and not myself, but I did not just type this whole self-clarification for nothing - might as well post the damn thing.  Okay, lol, so we are on the same page.

Because the list is last wednesday's leftovers... (0.00 / 0)
They might do in a pinch, but come on...no one wants to  eat week-old leftovers--but you will if you are starving.  Maybe the rest of Texas Ds are pumped up at the prospect of Barnes running. Anyone??

Show me someone on the list besides Noriega that even has the profile of a winner. I didn't say no to Noriega, I asked if he was even interested.

I used to work for Sharp--love the guy.  Would back him in a heartbeat...if he was going to completely revamp his style of campaigning and get new staff and consultants.  His current/former style just doesn't quite get him over the hump.

Also, Sharp has never raised money under a capped system...many of you know how oddly different it is to raise money under caps when you are used to getting $50k checks.

Isn't the supposed definition of insanity repeating the same action and legitimately expecting a different outcome each time?

If we're just tossing around names, what about Steve Wolens, Jim Turner, Julian Castro and Richard Pena Raymond?

Hmm.... (0.00 / 0)
I'm interested enough in Barnes to ask if BOR would be willing to commission a poll with the same people you use for your pres primary tracking poll to test his name ID and the horserace between him and Cornyn.  Just for fun I'd also like to see the name ID on Sharp and the rest of the bunch as well as a horserace between them and Cornyn.  Is this remotely possible?

The reason I want to see this is to see if, given the HUGE influx of people (myself included) and time that has elapsed if anyone remembers Barnes at ALL and, if so, if it effects them positively or negatively (using Sharp as an indicator of the "high water mark").

Zogby (0.00 / 0)
polled Barnes for Senate last March (don't ask me why) and the general consensus was, "Who?"

1.6% Very favorable
9.4% Somewhat favorable
8.6% Somewhat unfavorable
12.5% Very Unfavorable
59.4% Not familiar
8.5% Not sure

$25 million can change a lot of things, but that's a lot of changing needed.

[ Parent ]
$25 mil can do it for other candidates too (0.00 / 0)
With that much name ID to change, we should spend 25 million dollars on someone who has a better shot at winning.

AKA someone not plagued with scandal who is younger and more charismatic.

Only us old fogeys remember Barnes (0.00 / 0)
Campaigning for Sissy Farenthold against Barnes was one of my first two political campaigns, but I knew little about him.  With the hindsight of 30 years, and all the changes that have occurred, I am quite willing to dust him off and consider him for the Senate.  Keep in mind:

1)  He was exonerated by the investigations of the Sharpstown scandal.  He was investigated because he has always, since his early 20s, had the capacity for getting his hands in everyone's pockets.  That is a trait that could make for a very influential senator.

2)  He has that capacity because he has extreme quantities of charisma.  You don't get elected Lite Guv before turning 30 without it.

3)  His lower voter ID is unimportant.  With his state connections, he could change it almost overnight.

4)  By Texas standards today, he is pretty darned liberal.  I would never have suspected it when I was younger.

He is the first prospect I thought sounded like he could really have a shot.

Three words (5.00 / 1)
President John Connally.

He was exonerated in the milk scandal, and he raised more money than anybody. I think that all got him a single delegate. I know presidential and senatorial are different, but still.

After Ben Barnes' behavior in the last campaign where he raised all that cash for Carole Foghorn Leghorn, why are we even discussing this?

No doubt Barnes has some baggage (0.00 / 0)
Your point is interesting in ways perhaps you did not anticipate.  Barnes was Connelly's protege, and yet he did not jump ship with Big John when he switched parties.  They were business partners for years, and still Barnes did not switch.  Barnes is clearly more liberal than, say, John Sharp.  I agree with those who call for a fresh face, but among the not-so-fresh faces, Barnes has a leg up.  He is "neo-fresh":  that is, he has been around a long time, but so not part of the political rivers that he would seem almost fresh.  He would have the power to remake himself in whatever image he chose, which would make him a force to be reckoned with.

[ Parent ]
With all due respect (4.00 / 2)
In this vast and great state, surely we have more options available to us?

Would the interests and mission of our party be truly represented by one with boatloads of baggage?  IMHO, our party does not need a candidate with any hint of damaged good status that can be easily served up as cannon fodder and smeared by the Cornyn campaign.  A compromised candidate would be an easy target of distraction from the real issues that impact Texans.

I can see it now; the swift boating of everything Barnes ever did, thought or said.  Meanwhile, Cornyn will not be held accountable for any of his rather questionable actions or motives for his policies.  The right wing scream machine will kick into its usual high gear, hiding its true intentions behind its routine and  distorted definition of patriotism.

I don't know about you, but I am sick and tired of having absolutely no representation in Washington.

I have given up on writing to our so-called U.S. Senators or Representatives, on any issue.  They clearly do not represent me, or you, for that matter.  I am fed up by their insulting cookie cutter responses that are mere recitations of GOP talking point garbage.  I honestly believe they think we are all stupid.  It's like "thank you for your letter of concern but I don't give a rat's derriere about you.  I work for big money, sweetie.  Don't you get it?"

We do not need some Republican Light person who will talk out of all sides of his/her mouth with a heavy leaning toward Republican "values," meaning the worship of and whoring for the almighty dollar and the owners of the dollars.

No, we need a strong candidate who has the courage and stamina to take the fight to the lying and incompetent Republican Party.  One who is truly committed to represent the interests of Texans over that of big everything else.

The GOP is the party that delivered Iraq, torture, and heck-of-a-job Brownie types.  Add to the witch's brew of incompetence a ton or two of corruption, e.g. no bid contracts in Iraq and the Abramoff sorts, who are tied to the hip with a certain former Texas exterminator from Sugar Land.  Add a pinch of a lying Libby (fall guy for Cheney) and a "forgetful" Gonzales.  Rove, the master mind of all that is evil and deplorable in politics, will never in a day be fired, even if he is charged, tried and convicted of a crime.

And then there is our very own Guv and his innumerable shenanigans and cozy deals with everyone but us.

How much longer must we be ruled by a party of sleaze and sin?

Let's work together for serious and effective change. Real change. Not change light.  There is so much talent alive, well and thriving in our party.  Reading the reflective and thought provoking comments posted by so many folks here is proof enough for me.

Perhaps the Ds could run Ken Bentsen? (0.00 / 0)
Even the Bentsen name could turn out the swing voters. If Ken made it past the primary, he'd likely blow away any Republican that he were up against.

good thought, but Bentsen is MIA (3.00 / 1)
Bentsen had a great shot in 02, but kinda got screwed.  Victor "No shot in hell" Morales stole a lot of Bentsen's South Texas strength simply by having a Spanish surname and the venerable "insiders of the TDP" wanted Kirk to complete the night terror team...er dream team.

I haven't seen or heard anything out of Bentsen since that time.  To my knowledge he is working as a lobbyist in D and teaching a college course.

But so was Bob Krueger in 1993... (0.00 / 0)
when Lloyd Bentsen was appointed by Clinton to be Treasury Secretary. Krueger had run for the Senate in 1978 and lost, but had the credibility with the Richards camp to be appointed to temporarily fill Bentsen's empty seat, then run for the Democratic nomination in the next election. If it could get that far in the special election, then why couldn't Ken run this go around?

By then alot of those who have never heard of Ken nor Victor would have a clean slate off which they would gather their info about Ken before making a primary decision.

We Need New Faces (4.00 / 2)
I'm tired of relying on Democrats who fought battles in the past stepping forward to fight political battles in the 21st century.  It's not that they aren't capable, it's just that our generation must take the lead in fighting the political battles we face today.

We need new leadership who has learned from those brave leaders of the Democratic Party in the past, taken the torch they held for so long, yet offer a new face, a new direction, and a new platform for Texans to appeal to.

We must stop living in the past and rely on what leadership we have now, and what leadership remains in the pipeline.

We need to continue and build our political machine to counter our opponents.  We need Democrats in the pipeline winning races from municipal, to county, to statewide, and eventually national.

I don't want to have to rely on the past to battle for the future.  It's our time to stand up and fight and build a bi-partisan platform that defines Texas Democrats again.

Ben Barnes I'm sure is a good man, but I don't believe he is the right man to take on John Cornyn.

amen, brother. (0.00 / 0)
We have to give folks a real contrast to choose from.

If we give them Cornyn-lite we'll get crushed as usual.  We don't need another apologist saying how much they agree with their opponent on critical issues.

We need someone who will be bold and progressive enough to tell everyone within ear shot that Cornyn was wrong on min. wage, is wrong on universal health care, is wrong on border security, is wrong on Iraq, is wrong on the environment and is wrong to keep his hair that big.

If we don't get a barnstorming sonuvabitch who will call Cornyn on the carpet for all of his bad votes, we will get creamed again.

The Tester race is a perfect example.  To hell with being Mr. Nice Guy.

The floor is open for nominations.

Qualified agree... (0.00 / 0)
My only concern is that we have a very very light bench after all of these years in the woods... and running for US Senate is a big deal.  At this point I'm very interested in finding a rich high tech guru from either Dallas or Houston who wants this office.  Sorta our hometown version of Warner from Virginia.  Anyone know anybody who fits that bill or do they think I'm crazy?

Announcement window... (0.00 / 0)
When would it begin to be too late to jump into this race?  Should those who are considering a run announce their intentions by the end of summer?

Also, since the primary will probably be a month earlier, won't campaigns need to be kicked into gear a month earlier than they normally have?  Since the session is called at the end of May, should we be anticipating announcements by the end of June (if a legislator were to run)?  Also, would it be more beneficial for a non-legislator (i.e., Sharp) who is going to make the jump to announce before the end of the session, or wait until after after a potential announcement by a someone in the lege?

I was only 14 during Cornyn's 2002 election, so I am completely unaware of when Kirk/Morales announced for the race.

Any thoughts?

Well... (0.00 / 0)
It helps to announce before November, as we all found out this past cycle.  I think August/Sept is a good time, given the lack of major interest in this race.

ASAP (0.00 / 0)
Whoever wishes to run needs to start now.

They need to raise the money, put together the networks, lay a campaign foundation, start a War Room for opposition research, begin traveling all over this HUGE state, and get media attention while Cornyn is away pampering special interests and lobbyists in DC.

David, I think you are right. (0.00 / 0)
Running for U.S. Senate is huge.  The candidate will need a lot of money - like perhaps $15 million -  and will have to be tough enough to take the fight to Cornyn's front door.  He/she will also have to have enough clout to get media attention, too.

I also agree with Todd and Colin.  We certainly do not need Mr. or Ms. Nice Person, "I agree in spirit with my opponent," to win.  No selling out on our Democratic principles allowed!

I worked on the Radnofsky campaign in 2006 and yes, it was an uphill battle to get exposure from our local newspaper in Houston.  We did get some coverage but not nearly enough.  In the end the Houston Chronicle endorsed W's head cheer leader and rubber stamp Hutchison anyway.  Since then I barely read the Chronicle.  Any news organization that endorses a rubber stamp for the worst Presidency in our history has not a shred of respect from me.

Money was also a problem.  Barbara Ann relied mostly on grass roots donations.  She ran a splendid campaign, however, the old fashioned way, by driving throughout this vast state in her own vehicle.  She stayed in the homes of volunteers everywhere she went in order to save on campaign funds.  I watched BAR speak on a number occasions and saw how she engaged the audience. Everyone she met loved her. BAR would have made an outstanding U.S. Senator who would have served  Texas well.  Had we more time, money and media exposure, we may have been able to pull off a win.

Bill White, mayor of Houston, would be a fantastic possibility, too.  I heard him speak at the Young Democrats meeting at a university here just after Hurricane Katrina.  (I attended as a staff/faculty guest of some of the students, not as a member)

The way in which Mr. White handled the influx of those displaced by Katrina was exemplary. The way he manages this huge and diverse city is pretty amazing, too.  He won by a record 91% vote.  Houston is a city that was probably almost evenly divided between Dems and Reps. when White was elected.  He obviously got the Republican vote. White served as a Deputy Secretary of Energy at some point in his career and therefore has some Washington experience.  The purpose of his visit to the university's Young Democrats was to urge students to pursue careers in public service.  I was very impressed by his presentation and how personable and likeable he is.

Of course I have no earthly idea whether either Radnofsky or White would even consider running.

If anyone would like to know more about Barbara Ann Radnofsky and  Bill White, please see below.
