2nd Day at the DNC Meeting...

by: david.holmes

Sat Feb 03, 2007 at 11:33 AM CST

(Mr Holmes keeps us informed. Here is Day 2. - promoted by Matt Glazer)

The 2nd day of the Winter DNC meeting brought more candidate speeches and more campaigning. We heard from the remaining candidates and handled a little business.

One bit of business was the Young Democrats' attempt to get "youth" included as a required target in each state's delegate selection plan for the National Convention as nearly any other constituency you can think of is already included.

The attempt failed, but each state will be pressured to add youth targets anyway. Texas will have it.

Now, about the candidate speeches today:

I hope some of you had the opportunity to watch these speeches. If not, they will be replayed on CSPAN and I imagine many of them can be found online.

Joe Biden: Biden had a bad first week of campaigning and he was the first to acknowledge it - with grace and sincerity. This is a serious guy who has done serious things in his career and he gave a pretty good speech. But the speech was more a foreign policy statement than presidential campaign speech.

Biden was still down in his hotel room when I left speaking with anyone who wanted to talk with him. In a different time he may have been a great candidate for this job. I'm betting he'll be the 2nd or 3rd to drop out.

Bill Richardson: Wow. Ok, remember my words here: Bill Richardson will be either of two things in this race - a spoiler for some other candidate much like Clark spoiled Edwards last cycle; or a sleeper candidate who could be thrust into the top tier and have an actual chance in the race.

Remember how Bill Clinton did better in NH than expected and the other candidates did worse than expected; propelling him forward. Richardson is poised to do the same. He sure as hell did it this weekend.

I had medium expectations of him and he blew me away. He was funny and smart and at-ease. And Presidential. He gave the best speech of the weekend when handicapping for the audience and purpose of the speech.

Learn about this guy and pay attention to him.

There is a long line outside his stuffed hotel room, but as of a few minutes ago he wasn't in there. I'm going to try again in a few minutes - surely he'll show...

Mike Gravel: The guy was a pretty forceful and effective Senator from Alaska - in the 1970's. He will have no impact in this race unless they allow him into the debate. If they do he will highlight the candidates who voted in Congress for the war, thereby reminding some in the Party that they are mad at those candidates. But that's it.

Tom Vilsack: Boring. I hate to sum him up that simply, but sheesh. Some speakers have the ability to make mundane things sound exciting; Tom Vilsack says important things but makes them sound like a meditative mantra. He disqualified himself with me for signing an English-only law in Iowa. And like Dodd yesterday, he just did nothing to distinguish himself.

He's a little better one-on-one; but still unexciting.

==================================================

Overall, the DNC Winter meeting was a success in introducing our field of presidential primary candidates.

Take a little time to research each of these folks - it will be interesting to see how the field narrows and refines itself over the next year.

Little Update (5.00 / 1)
Just got back from Richardson's room. From the response he is getting from DNC members, he appears to be a 1st tier candidate. The excitement and size of his crowd was 2nd only to the 1st place tie for Obama and Clinton. I was not the only one heavily impressed with his speech today it appears. None of the other candidates had a reception anywhere close to those three. Well, Edwards might have if he'd stuck around.

David, do you know (0.00 / 0)
of a page where we can see some of the speeches? Come back safe to Texas, take care of Norma Fisher for me :)

What is not to like about Richardson?

um... (0.00 / 0)
Good question. There is a reason I'm rooting for him. Ya, some of the other candidates can also win the presidency. And ya, its arguable that some of the others might even be able to win it easier than Richardson. But Richardson can win it, too; and he has shown me more to make me think he will be a great president compared to the others.

I wanted to be for Richardson, (0.00 / 0)
I really did. Against the war from the beginning, knows how to get things done diplomatically, says he has a track record on clean, alternative energy and is for energy independence, my top concern.

But, I've watched him on T.V. whenever I get the chance, and I see someone who, IMO, has already made some missteps in expressing himself, giving the Rethugs some dandy soundbites they can use against him. He also seems to have a very hard time talking in a strong way, just physically. He looks like he gets short of breath.

Richardson has a great resume. But he hasn't, at least when I've seen him, been able to roll what he's done into a convincing narrative. It's more like, "I've *done* these things." He doesn't seem to get that the resume part of the job application process is done, and now we're into the interview part.

Maybe he's suddenly improved. I'll try taking a look at his speech (if I can get it to download on my old system and with dial-up.)

communication (0.00 / 0)
Ya, I had problems with some of his communication style, but I really liked his DNC speech. Granted, it was a lot of I've *done* this, too; but sometimes thats all you need, as long as he can express it consistently in a convincing manner.
