AP Calls Race for Ciro

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Tue Dec 12, 2006 at 09:06 PM CST

RODRIGUEZ DEFEATS BONILLA

Former U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez defeated seven-term Republican incumbent Henry Bonilla in a runoff on Tuesday, adding another Democrat to Congress and deciding Texas' final congressional seat.

Rodriguez's win gives Congress another Democrat after the party won control of Congress in the November elections. Texas added one Democrat already in the suburban Houston 22nd Congressional District once held by Republican Rep. Tom DeLay.

95% of the vote in Bexar is in. Ciro holds with 56.3%.

Take that Tom DeLay.

Congratulations to Congressman Rodriguez! (0.00 / 0)
Fantastic news!!!

Yeah baby! (0.00 / 0)
Deep in the heart of Texas...

8000 vote lead. (0.00 / 0)
Even I'm calling this one.  Bonilla could close it to 5000, but that's as close as it's going to get.

Thanks for the memories!

It will get a little closer (0.00 / 0)
Medina is narrowing the margin and it's still only 2/3rds (16/24) reported.  But it won't affect the outcome for sure.  Still a 6,000 vote margin.

Thanks to the DCCC for jumping in with substantial support -- and thanks to Ciro for hanging in there and not giving up. CD 23 and Texas will be well represented in Congress by a man of great integrity and intelligence.

We won we won we won!

Hmm... (0.00 / 0)
Here's another argument in the neg ad war.
I doubt there was any exit polling being done on this race, but I would have loved to have seen some data on why people voted the way they did.  Those Bonilla ads were just god awful, basically calling Ciro a death-taxing, marriage-hating Santa Clause terrorist. Depending on the final percentage, it looks like Ciro pulled even more than the combined Democrats on 11/7, so was this backlash against those ads, an even worse national climate for the Republicans, a stronger GOTV operation, or what?

My personal feeling is that victory in November supressed Republican turnout, and the idiotic neg spots, which ran NONSTOP here, helped remind the Democrat base of the runoff and how much they hate Bonilla. It's just very bad use of neg advertising, IMO. Of course, the Big Dog helped in the publicity arena as well. ;D

Anybody have a different analysis?

Gotta agree (0.00 / 0)
The ads Henry Bonilla and friends were running the past few weeks were simply outrageous to the point where you began to think that maybe he's auditioning for a future role on SNL.  Simply garbage material that really had no basis in reality and only reinforced the image that he was on his last legs.  And speaking from here at Bitters & 1604, I nearly spat out my drink on my morning drive when I saw the area littered with nothing but Bonilla signs.  Ughh, even the Spectrum club had some stray signs up...

Glad to see this guy went down, though.  So exicted.

I was surprised.. (0.00 / 0)
I drive by Shavano City Hall at DeZavala and Military everyday, and I was actually surprised at the sign coverage there... Shavano Park is one precinct area in itself and pure Bonilla-land, but Ciro pretty much had Bonilla matched sign for sign.  I personally wouldn't have wasted any time or signs there, but they apparently felt otherwise... There were alot of people there too, so I was worrying all day about a strong R turnout, but I guess I was wrong. ;D

CONGRATULATIONS (3.00 / 1)
To Ciro but also the broader TX Democratic community and BOR community that chipped in to help Ciro pull off what DC considers a great upset, but that we (you and us) always knew was possible.

That is why we took the risk of having Ciro be the first candidate that Next Generation Democrats endorsed.

I will be puting together a more formal thank you and congratulations for BOR and the Democrats of Texas tomorrow (after I finish studying for my Constitutional law exam tht Karl Rove should have taken).

Until then , Party on Party people.  Remember, it's the Democratic Party not the Democratic get together.

I would rather focus that effort and energy... (5.00 / 1)
and get rid of michael mccaul.

I agree (0.00 / 0)
McCaul can go, and actually, I have some interesting news on that district in my inbox...

McCaul (0.00 / 0)
And Cornyn can join him in the dumpster of history.

Hope is not a plan.

Just get Lance Armstrong (0.00 / 0)
to challenge him for that Senate seat and it's ours.

Hmm, no.. (0.00 / 0)
I think one Roid-raged athlete on the national political stage is enough...

Everybody loves to love on Lance, but the guy really is, personally, an asshole.

[ Parent ]
I agree, too... (0.00 / 0)
Cuellar has redeemed himself enough to be safe for a cycle.

Let's go after Republicans before we start eating our own puppies.

I agree on priorities (0.00 / 0)
But there are a ton of fine real Democrats that are itching to get rid of that SOB and if one steps up to the plate swinging like Babe Ruth then I'm on board.

Online Phone Banking (4.50 / 4)
And now if we can just keep involved those phone bankers from all over the country who helped out today!

Mario just reported that of the final 100 calls made, at least 17 were placed from outside Texas...and one from Canada.

Thanks to our volunteers all across the world.

That's awesome (0.00 / 0)
Really, really cool.

Many thanks to each and every one (0.00 / 0)
of those who called, and mad props to the DCCC.

Kicking Republican ass feels good.

Really, really good.

Before you win, you have to fight. Come fight along with us at TexasKaos.

Just an idea for '08 (0.00 / 0)
So, considering that taking on Cornyn will be a hard shot, and that our best candidate, Bill White, will likely not run. How about we run Henry Cuellar?

Benefits:
- He has been elected statewide before
- He can be replaced in the house by a more liberal member
- He can and has driven out the hispanic voting population
- He can realign the Texas Hispanic population more heavily in our favor
- He's conservative enough to the point that it'd be foolish to call him a tax-and-spend liberal
Downside:
- He's pretty damn conservative
- ditto
- " "

cuellar could win (0.00 / 0)
I agree-cuellar would be a strong candidate at this point.

Duval County (0.00 / 0)
The people of the city of San Diego and Duval County welcome Ciro Rodriguez back to Congress!

AS FOR CUELLAR.. I SEE " BLACK KNIGHTS" AHEAD (0.00 / 0)
The same republicans that gerrymandered a district for my friend Henry with the BLESSING of TOM DELAY.(I WAS THERE)..would have a field day with all the gossip...innuendo..chisme during Henry's BLACK KNIGHT years  etc...etc...etc..etc...not to mention all the SEX..DRUGS and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES EPISODES that  transpired during his 2004 race against Ciro...If I were him..nope...I  wouldnt...HEAR HE WAS OUTED BY A D C  FUNDRAISER  OVER FAMILY VALUES...WHATEVER THAT MEANS...

AS for those of you that know me..AINT SCARED OF HENRY AND HIS ENFORCER BROTHERS..WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THE F B I INTERVIEW ME AGAIN...

OOPS...MEANT TO WRITE 2002 (0.00 / 0)
AGAINST BONILLA...
