Chron: Three Democratic Pickups Could Mean New Speaker

by: Cody Yocom

In case you needed another reason to go out and vote for a Democrat, the Houston Chronicle says a swing of just THREE seats in the Texas House could lead to the ouster of Dictator Speaker Tom Craddick.

So to those of you that are still whiny because we aren’t going to take back the House or Senate in Texas, here’s a reason to get off your behind.  Getting Craddick out of his newly reappointed Speaker’s Chambers is reason enough for me to go vote.  Oh…it might be a little empowering for the Democrats, as well.

Here’s the article in the Chronicle article Update on the Update: The link is back up and running.

Texas Democrats have no hopes of regaining control of the state House, but some are optimistic about winning enough seats in the upcoming election to trigger a Republican challenge of House Speaker Tom Craddick.

Democrats need to pick off only three or four Republican House members to leave Craddick, a Republican from Midland, vulnerable to a challenge from his own party, they say. Craddick's firm leadership style — described by some as autocratic — has created an undercurrent of discontent, and Republican losses of House seats in the Nov. 7 election could inspire a revolt, said House Mexican American Caucus Chairman Pete Gallego, D-Alpine.

That sounds like wishful thinking (0.00 / 0)
It'd take a lot more than three seats.

What makes you say that? Craddick has lost his Craddickhead (0.00 / 0)
enablers Ron Wilson, Vilma Luna, Glen Lewis, Al Edwards, Jaime Capelo, Roberto Gutierrez, etc.

But others have taken their places. (0.00 / 0)
And the viable candidates for speaker aren't going to stick their necks out without a much more comfortable margin (which three seats doesn't afford).  Six or seven, maybe.

Do you have some special knowledge? If not, (0.00 / 0)
I would guess that Pete Gallego, Senfronia Thompson, and Kelly Fero would seems to have a pretty good handle on the situation.

No, aside from having talked to a few of the potential candidates. (1.00 / 2)
I'm pretty sure they don't have a handle on the situation.

I tend to go with Senfronia and Pete over an anonymous post on a (5.00 / 2)
message board, but thanks for the heads up.

Fine with me (1.00 / 1)
but Craddick stays the Speaker next session.

A VERY Comfortable Margin (0.00 / 0)
I'd believe it when I see it.  We all know that there are quite a few R's that wouldn't mind Craddick losing his position, but they have learned that voting against him will cost them any committee chairmanship or other posh position.

Craddick likes to hack away at people that don't like him, and it would take a very comfortable margin and easy liklihood of victory for House members to run or vote for someone else.

Another thing... (5.00 / 1)
I would be rather ironic for Craddick not get to enjoy the expensive and beautiful improvements to his House appartment.
