Wong Running from Party ID

by: Ryan Goodland

Tue Sep 26, 2006 at 01:02 PM CDT

(bump - promoted by Ryan Goodland)

Martha Wong is currently engaged in the fight of her political life against Democrat Ellen Cohen. Apparently, she's realized that in an urban, socially progressive district in Houston, her right-wing Republican record isn't going to fly, as she's been putting up yard signs with pieces of red tape over the word "Republican."

Remember Martha Wong's record:

  • Martha Wong voted to require abortion providers to tell women that abortion causes breast cancer, despite substantial scientific evidence to the contrary.

  • Martha Wong blocked funding for a stem cell research facility in Houston's medical center.

Martha's clearly out of step with the district, and the polls are beginning to reflect that. A poll the governor's office ran showed her down by six points; I've heard from some very reliable sources Martha's own internal polling shows her down by eight points. It's time for Martha Wong to go, and luckily we have a great candidate in Ellen Cohen, who supports same-sex marriage, reproductive rights, and stem cell research, to replace her.

UPDATE: As always, Pink Dome brings the funny.

UPDATE 2: By the way, the red-tape isn't the work of a supporter ashamed of the Republicans; it's the work of the Wong campaign. When I visited the Wong campaign office last week to pick up signed debate terms for the debate Rice University is hosting October 12, there was a big stack of yard-signs-with-red-tape in the corner. Full sized photos of the offending sign here and here.

Why no press coverage? (0.00 / 0)
Any reason this story is not in the Houston Chronicle yet? After all the 4th story on their homepage currenlty is that Paris Hilton has been charged wiht a DUI. Kristen Mack is the politics columnist for the "Houston and Texas" section, lets send her an email at kristen.mack@chron.com...They have done lots of great stories on this race, this one is equally important, is funny and even has pretty pictures. Anyone else have suggestions of who to email at the Chron?

Actually... (0.00 / 0)
I just shot her an e-mail giving her a heads-up on the story, and she's aware of it, so that's not really necessary.

If you do send her an e-mail, please be courteous in letting her know about the story.

Thanks Ryan - good call on being courteous and not flooding her inbox, she has written good columns on this race and others

Why are you so afraid?  Stand up for what you believe in!

This Wong one (0.00 / 0)
must still have enough of an operating conscience to know to be ashamed of Republicants!

Funniest sign story I've heard in years (0.00 / 0)
Wong exposed in cover up.  Wong backs off the republican message.  Wong running the wrong way.  Or is it the right  to be ashamed to be a republican these days?

After all this is said and done, please don't let her jump parties now.

Ellen Cohen will make a fine State Representative.

Shoulda used duct tape (0.00 / 0)
Just sayin

This is Martha "No Thong" Wong we're talking about here... (0.00 / 0)
Maybe she put that red tape on the signs to cover up the obscene part because they were dancing in the nude.  Within a 1000 yards of a church.  Full of Minors.  With Beer.  Or something.

Talk about funny......look at this sign (0.00 / 0)
http://photos1.blogg...

This is another republican who has finally after 8 years had to figure out how to run a campaign. He as least has signs out, not many, in fact, very few, but some.

It is a god awful looking sign. His real name is John Davis and his challenger is aby www.sherriematula.com.

Great post - needs formating to stop stretching the margins out.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

Amazing! (0.00 / 0)
You may recall that Martha's major legislative initiative last session was a bill to rename the circular drive around the Capitol in Austin after Ronald Reagan.  Where's Ronald Reagan now???

Wong is a Joke (0.00 / 0)
I drive thru Bellaire and have seen some of the Wong signs, but now I'm going to have to look more closely for the red duct tape.

If the Democrats don't win Dist. 134 with Ellen Cohen, then something is really wrong.  Ellen is a fantastic candidate and will make the Democratic Party proud when she goes to Austin.  Wong, on the other hand, is simply a joke when it comes to representing her constituents.  If only we had the red duct tape to put over Wong's mouth along time ago.

Ellen needs to print some new signs (0.00 / 0)
showing Wong's voting record and wrap some crime scene tape over it.
