Some Democrats are Idiots, Too

by: Phillip Martin

Tue Aug 15, 2006 at 01:49 PM CDT

And apparently, there are at least a few of them that work at the DSCC.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee released a new TV ad called "Secure." Watch the video here. The video shows clips of presumed terrorists, then a shot of Osama Bin Laden, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a photo of what we must believe is the Dubai ports, a photo of a Mexican jumping over a fence, and Kim Jong-il.

The video reads as follows:

Security under Bush and GOP? Not enough troops, body armor, or armed Humvees in Iraq. 4 times as many terror attacks in 2005. 2 billion cut from law enforcement. Iran developing nuclear weapons. Just 6 % of containers inspected. Millions more illegal immigrants. North Korea has quadrupled its nuclear aresenal. Feel safer? Vote for change.
Mexicans jumping over a fence are causing terrorism? We can stop terrorism by stopping illegal immigration from Mexico? Is this really what the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee believes?

I understand wanting to fight back against Republicans that accuse Democrats of being linked to Al-Qaeda. But if we can't bother to point out FACTS (like how the Bush administration has failed to enact the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission), then we're just a bunch of ignorant idiots that don't deserve the respect of our mothers, let alone the American public.

Yet another reason why Texans SHOULD NEVER SEND THEIR DOLLARS OUT OF STATE. Instead, donate to the TDP. Donate to True Blue Action. Donate to our Texroots candidates. But please, never send checks to any of these national groups.

Oh come on... (0.00 / 0)
Campos had the same read on this and you're both off base. The commercial was pretty clearly targeted to R failures on security and one of those issues is our border security. One of the reco's of the 9/11 Comm was to secure our borders.

It's no more racist than it is anti-Islamic.

Honestly, if you want to attack the DSCC do it based on how bad the ad actually was.

now it's a dem failure, too (4.00 / 2)
So in an election year it's a good idea to possibly piss off millions of Hispanic voters? I have to agree with Phillip and Marc, this could blow up in the party's face. If this is going to be the thrust of the party's message, rather than going to the polls in protest of the GOP's blatant racism, Hispanics are liable to just stay home if they think nobody is speaking to their interests.

Four words and a scene can only fail if (0.00 / 0)
the media turns it into an issue.

This isn't on the level of what the GOP has done, but it would be treated that way, as a way of trying to blunt the impact of all those voter awareness moves.

[ Parent ]
No way (4.33 / 3)
Sorry, I see that, and it's just plain wrong. And anyone with any sense knows that immigration reform is a separate issue than defeating terrorists. It's all under the umbrella of national security, but it's an entirely different thing.

This video shows us that Osama Bin Laden and a Mexican jumping over a fence are equal threats to our national security. That's bullshit.

There's all sorts of racism, and some of it is tacet and passive. There's no reason to let that stand any more than aggressive racism, and there's no reason why -- in a year when terrorism and immigration are two huge topics -- Democrats need to act dumb and pretend they're the same thing.

Plus -- you're right. It's a shitty, shitty ad.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

[ Parent ]
So you honestly think... (0.00 / 0)
this is racism?

Then I guess I should consider Bell anti-gay for not taking a stand to repeal that odious amendment.

The whole message of the ad was about safety and security. Bin Laden and a porous border are part of that same issue.

[ Parent ]
But on two entirely different levels (5.00 / 1)
Terrorism = bad 100% of the time

Immigration = bad...when? When it inconveniences us? We don't like illegal immigrants, but we don't mind driving on roads, sitting in buildings, or eating food they've worked on?

Again, terrorism and immigration are too big to carelessly lump them into the same hair-brained :30 ad.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

homosexuals = fabulous 100% of the time.

so basically we should... (0.00 / 0)
consider Hispanic immigrants as nothing more than a source of cheap labor? Kind of like Pakistani's in Saudi Arabia?

Immigration is not bad. What is bad is no policy to control it or to restrict our border crossing. For one thing, new immigrants to the US, especially those from Mexico, Guatamala, Nicaragua and El Salvador are abused through substandard wages. You don't see a problem with that?

This is of course not to mention the fact that it does actually cause a drag on wages at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder. Keep in mind that the R talking point about illegals taking jobs American's don't want is a bit of white fluffy nonsense. And yes, I chose those words for a reason.

One last note, are you implying that Zacry and other construction companies working on state road contracts/projects are hiring illegal immigrants?

[ Parent ]
I completely agree (0.00 / 0)
That illegal immigration is bad, and we should find ways to stop it. But the solutions we need to protect our country from terrorism and the solutions we need to stop illegal immigration are so far apart that we don't need to talk about them in the same :30 ad.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

[ Parent ]
That's the problem... (0.00 / 0)
I don't think the ad conflated them. I don't think it was about immigration at all which is why the footage of someone coming over the fence actually confuses people.

Basically, it was a bad ad. And you're right the issue is more complex than a 30 second ad (security... immigration takes even longer:)). However, it's a campaign year and sometimes that's all the time you have.

Good thing it won't be appearing on TV:)!

Sure, there's smoother ways to say that Bush's (0.00 / 0)
immigration policy is a failure with a capital F.

I would imagine that the immigration part would qualify more under general security, as opposed to terrorism-related security. Maybe not the best cohesive pairing, but it's not racism either.

I think you're jumping to a pretty big conclusion when you say that the DSCC believes that "less illegal immigration = less terrorism"

Sad thing is, there really hasn't been a good immigration policy proposed yet. Guest workers is a DOA idea. The giant wall is an idea that is not gonna work. Amnesty doesn't really work for me either.

I will note that, in theory, terrorists could come into the US though Mexico.

But they would rather just come to the US on a Student Visa, or some other legal form of entry.

If I recall correctly, didn't the 9/11 hijackers stay here on Student Visas?

Basically, The Bush Immigration policy is failed, and so has his homeland security policy. And I would rather see that be the issue, than criticizing a questionable pairing of issues.

But then again, giving money to the TDP isn't too bad of an idea either.

I as a conservative/libertarian... (0.00 / 0)
agree that the Bush immigration policy has failed miserably. But what do you BOR posters propose as a solution?

- Kinky has proposed the trust fund.
- Tom Tancredo thinks we should have walls.
- Rick Perry points the finger at Bush.
- Ahnold Schwarzenegger proposes who knows what...

Solutions, anyone?

I say let's build a wall. I do have to give Perry credit for ONE thing- civilians watching webcams to report illegal immigrants crossing the border. Streamline the legal immigration process. And work with Vicente Fox to improve economic conditions in Mexico so that they can better compete in the world marketplace and offer incentives to not have to leave their country.

As for a formal solution (0.00 / 0)
I don't have one. I'm not an expert at all that.

Some of my ideas include reconfiguring the whole system with how many people we let in from certain countries.

There's probably a serious and workable solution, but it's not being figured out because the time spent between elections isn't being spent to figure out good solutions to all this.

Note (0.00 / 0)
I changed the headline, b/c it was way overreaching. Sorry if I went too far on that one -- I'm changing it on my own accord, b/c I want a serious discussion about this, and not something that gets lost by language.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

The DC-CC groups aren't known for accomplishments in advertising (0.00 / 0)
(DC-CC = DC Campaign Committees = DCCC and DSCC)

The DCCC and NRCC ads also have a very cookie-cutter approach too.

[ Parent ]
no joke... (0.00 / 0)
it's almost like they were produced by different halves of the same retarded brain.

Some Thoughts... (5.00 / 1)
First, ads have to operate on a visual AND audio dimension.  This ad has no spoken words, if you're in the kitchen or reading a magazine or anything else that keeps you from looking at the screen, you miss the entire ad.

Second, I tend to think border security IS a national security issue.  People crossing EITHER border illegally could potentially be VERY bad people who plan to do VERY bad things.  I'm sorry, but we CANNOT afford to take that risk.  ALL people should be forced to cross legally, be they Mexican, Canadian, or scary terrorist person.  This isn't a policy designed to discriminate, it's a policy designed to prevent another horrible attack.

Third, I think the frame is AWFUL.  They need to work on the frame that Republicans are inept and cannot effectively solve problems.  People believe that.  They won't believe that Republicans don't WANT to solve problems.  It's a different mentality and requires no logical leap in one's head.

Thank you! (0.00 / 0)
especially for this...

ABSOLUTELY.

Considering our pathetic performance in Texas (0.00 / 0)
over the last 10 years, it's kind of hard to take seriously a Texas Democratic rant against the national Democratic party.

It's kind of like the 49ers or Raiders calling out the Steelers for not being a great team.

And yes, I give to TDP.
I also give to the DNC and my local party.

I'm pretty confident in saying that I have far more faith in the DNC than TDP right now.  Having the 50th best party in the US in a resource-rich state isn't exactly awe-inspiring.

There's a reason I worked the 2004 campaign in Arkansas.

As for the football comparison (0.00 / 0)
It could be more like SMU calling out Texas Tech.

[ Parent ]
Not just at the national level (0.00 / 0)
Anyone who attended the state convention knows there are plenty of idiot Democrats here in Texas.  Seems like a bad ad is not a reason to completely abandon the national party.  I think a good compromise is to send money money to individual candidates that most closely reflect your views.

Not the only reason... (0.00 / 0)
Just another reason why we shouldn't send money out. And I agree -- donate directly to candidates, by all means.
