Lieberman Chooses to Become Next Carole Strayhorn

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

It's over.

U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman conceded defeat in the Democratic primary just after 11 p.m. in the bitter Connecticut primary.

But Lieberman pledged to continue his candidacy as an independent in the general election in November.

"Incidentally, we are gonna go," Lieberman told supporters at the Hartford Hilton hotel.

Challenger Ned Lamont defeated Lieberman by more than 10,000 votes, according to unofficial vote returns.

"The old politics of partisan polarization one today," Lieberman said. "For the sake of our state, our country and my party, I cannot and will not let that result stand."

Joe, this isn't Lamont's fault. This is a democracy where people can run in a primary and defeat incumbents. That's part of the deal.

If we are to complain about having a distracting election going into the fall, it's not because Lamont won, it's your fault for not accepting the results of a primary election like anyone else and believe that the world owes him a seat in the Senate. You rank right up there with Tom Delay in the "I own this seat and fuck everyone else" category.

Lamont has beaten the Democratic Party's 2000 Vice Presidential nominee. Lieberman had all the help in the world he could ask for or buy. For his loss, he has no one to blame but himself.

Joe, former Texas Republican Carole Strayhorn would like to officially welcome you, a fellow Party turncoat, into the Independent fold. You can give her a kiss as you join her in defeat this November.

Lieberman's indy bid not only damage Democrats' chances of retaining the seat, but they distract us all from the many opportunities we have in picking up Republican held districts across the country and in Texas.

What can you do to help?

Many Democrats, regardless of whom they supported in the CT primary, stated they would support the Democratic nominee, as is the normal thing to do in elections. In the next few days you can take action to save us all from a distracting Indepedent run.

1. Urge Senate Minority leader Harry Reid to strip Lieberman of all committee assignments. (202) 224-3542

2. Urge the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) to support Ned Lamont as he the Democratic Senate nominee. (202) 224-2447

3. Call your Texas Democratic Congresspersons and ask they support Ned Lamont as the nominee. Directory here.

Both parties (3.67 / 3)
Let's remember that Carole Four Names betrayed not one, but two parties. Lieberman may well be on his way to that stature as well.

Congrats Ned. The voters have spoken.

The goal now will be to get the support lined up for Ned to help block Joe from going Indy. It can still happen.

Voter turnout (3.00 / 2)
One of the lame excuses Lieberman had for running as an independent was that there would be very low voter turnout in the primary. Well turnout was at a record lever: 49-50%, I believe.  And yet, Joe immediately announced his run as he was conceding. Hmph.  I can only hope that he is stripped of any Dem. committee assignments and that every Democrat publicly and enthusiastically endorse Ned Lamont for the November election.

Good job, Joe. "A true democrat" indeed....

OMG (3.00 / 1)
Joe Lieberman really is a sore loserman.  The Democrats in the state of Connecticut exercised their democratic right and said they don't want someone new.  By running as an indy, Lieberman is saying he doesn't care what his party's voters think; he doesn't accept the realities of the democratic process.  He only cares about keeping his cozy office in D.C.  Connecticut Democrats say they want change, Joe says no.  I'm sad we claim to share the same party.

they DO want someone new

more than just about the war (5.00 / 1)
All the news is talking about is his stance on the war - and while that is important there's also:

1) his sanctimonious rant about President Clinton's private life. Way to support a friend when he's down, Joe.

2) his involvement in sticking the government into the Schiavo family's private business

3) his support of that abomination known as the Bankruptcy Bill

4) his unbelievably callous statement during the campaign about rape victims

Good riddance to bad garbage.

Let's not forget Kinky is also a Republican running as a Pseudo- (4.33 / 3)
Independent. Kinky has run for office in the past as a Republican, voted for Bush/Cheney in 2004, given interview with Ruminator magazine confirming that he supported Bush's Iraq war, and has lied about voting for Gore in 2000 according to his public voting records.

If this were not enough evidence of Kinky's status as a Republican, Kinky's views on immigration and the separation of church and state are to the furthest right of all the other candidates.

Kinky promises to take "a harder line on immigration" than any of the other candidates and says the Tejano protesters marching in favor of immigration reform were "half playing hooky" and that "I will divide the border into five jurisdictions, assigning one Mexican general to each and providing a trust fund for that general."

Kinky also promises "I am going to see non-denominational prayer and the Ten Commandments put back in the schools."

Who is the Lieberman in the Texas gubernatorial election?  I think Kinky has at least as good a claim to that title as Strayhorn.

With laughable comments such as the ones above.... (0.00 / 0)
You wonder why Kinky is outperforming Chris Bell....

Keep the Kinky bashing coming...I'm voting for Werner!

Texas Law Actually Superior? (2.67 / 3)
This may be one of those rare times when a Texas election law is superior to that of another state:  the one that prevents candidates from doing as Lieberman is doing.  In Texas you can run in the primary or as an independent, but not both.  So it is Connecticut's bad that this was even possible.
