Ron Paul: 19th Century Man

by: El Jefe

(Shane Sklar is running against Paul in the TX-CD 14. Donate to Sklar's campaign, and help bring real leadership back to Texas. - promoted by Phillip Martin)

Perhaps because of his vociferous opposition to the war in Iraq and now his call for impeaching Bush, a lot of progressives say that Ron Paul is their kind of Republican congressman. Some go so far as to say they'd rather Paul be re-elected over Shane Sklar.

However, they are probably unaware of the breadth of Paul’s strange Libertarian philosophy. They should know that they are throwing in with a guy who holds decidedly 19th century views – on race, health care, aid to the needy and dispossessed, and the border with Mexico.

Paul and some progressive may come down on the same side on some issues, but it’s pretty clear they didn’t get there on the same path. And I would imagine that almost every progressive would deem many of Paul's other views as reprehensible, at minimum. The proof is below, in Ron Paul’s own words.

A 19th Century Vision

Republican Ron Paul missed out on the 19th century, but he admires it from afar. He speaks lovingly of the good old days before things like Social Security and Medicaid existed, before the federal government outlawed drugs like heroin. [Washington Post, 7/9/06]

Race
“If you have ever been robbed by a black teen-aged male, you know how unbelievably-fleet-footed they can be.” [Victoria Advocate, 5/24/96]

“Given the inefficiencies of what DC laughingly calls the criminal justice system, I think we can safely assume that 95 percent of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal.” [Victoria Advocate, 5/24/96]

“Opinion polls consistently show that only about 5 percent of blacks have sensible political opinions, i.e. support the free market, individual liberty and the end of welfare and affirmative action.” [Victoria Advocate, 5/24/96]

“The Criminals who terrorize our cities - in riots and on every non-riot day - are not exclusively young black males, but they largely are.  As children they are trained to hate whites, to believe that white oppression is responsible for all black ills, to fight the power, to steal and loot as much money from the white enemy as possible.  Anything is justified against The Man.’”  [Victoria Advocate, 8/7/96]

“There is no such thing as a hate crime.” [Ron Paul: Political Action Report, 1/15/92]

Aid for the Needy
Paul has stated that a “free market provides for the poor...”  [MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, 10/24/88]

Aid for Hurricane Katrina Victims

NOTE: Paul’s own district, the 14th, has about 150 miles of coastline and was struck by Hurricane Rita a few weeks after Katrina inundated New Orleans.

"Is bailing out people that chose to live on the coastline a proper function of the federal government?” he asks.  “Why do people in Arizona have to be robbed in order to support the people on the coast?" [Washington Post, 7/9/06]

Health Care
Paul’s press secretary said that Paul believes that Medicare is “unconstitutional” but instead of scrapping it immediately, according to his spokesperson, he believes that Congress needs to “wean people off the federal pig.” [Victoria Advocate, 8/11/96]

“I am opposed to any form of government health insurance as I am opposed to the taxes, regulations, licensing requirements, and monopolistic practices, which keep health costs higher than their true market value.” [CNN Presidential Questionnaire, 1988]

Social Security
As for Social Security, "we didn't have it until 1935," Paul says. "I mean, do you read stories about how many people were laying in the streets and dying and didn't have medical treatment? …Prices were low and the country was productive and families took care of themselves and churches built hospitals and there was no starvation." [Washington Post, 7/9/06]

“Something must be done to phase out the government’s involvement in Social Security.  Pension and annuity plans should be the concern of the people, not the government.  Political control of these things will lead only to bankruptcy and misery for retired persons.” [CNN Presidential Questionnaire, 1988M]

The Border
In the 1988 Presidential campaign, Paul argued that “the U.S. Border Patrol should be eliminated.  Any necessary guarding of our borders should be done by the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force.”  This would effectively militarize the Mexico-U.S. border. [CNN Presidential Questionnaire, 1988]

“Immigrants can spread diseases for which we may have no immunity. There is also the question of crime and culture.  Many immigrants come from countries with different legal structures and are not willing to behave in the way we expect American citizens to behave.” [Ron Paul Political Report, 3/15/92]

The best/worst quote (5.00 / 1)
The racist remarks are just, you know --r I'm not able to understand people that think like that. But I'm just amazed, also, about his remarks about victims of Hurricane Rita. As a progressive, I believe that the government should help people with those things we cannot control individually -- including military protection, and, yes, relief from natural disaster.

Thankfully, Sklar is calling Paul out for voting against Hurricane relief, then bragging that he helped pass hurricane relief. From Sklar's website:

"We get zero leadership out of congressman Ron Paul on hurricane relief. It's hypocritical and dishonest for Ron Paul to vote against this important hurricane relief effort and claim credit for it's passing," said Sklar. "Ron Paul has been in Washington too long. Only in Washington, D.C. would it make sense for to take credit for something you voted against."

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

You're being unfair to the 19th Century (0.00 / 0)
We had a non-military border patrol back then:  it was called the Texas Rangers.  There were hundreds, sometimes thousands, of them, and they patrolled the range, including the border, against Mexican and Indian depredations on the frontier.  Many would call them para-military, though, because of the military-style command structure (companies led by captains).

Rangers For Rustlers (0.00 / 0)
The Rangers weren't much of a deterrent against illegal immigrants.  Hell, they spent most of their time chasing rustlers.

And, again, it's not a time that we should harken back to.  When it came to Mexicans or Mexican-Americans, the Rangers had a shoot-first-and-ask-questions-later policy that has made them unpopular in many parts of the border to this day.

Great diary, Jefe.  Ron Paul is a nightmare and we're only lucky that Republican leadership ignores him as much as they do, rather than giving him even a smidgen of power to act out his bizarre ideas.

Before 2000, I emailed him about Afghan women, who were in dire straits because of the repressive Taliban.  (Gee, nothing like the cakewalk Afghanis are living today, is it?)  Anyway, his response to me was that Afghan women are doing fine, and that we shouldn't worry about that old Taliban.  Flash forward to the Bush administration and...Oops...AWK-waaard...  Anyway, an anti-war stance is great, but an anti-human stance is not.  I suspect Ron Paul wouldn't pull you out of a well to save your life, if he had to buy a new rope to do it.

These days I'm getting more mail from him. (Nice of him to come out of his cave and actually have a presence...now that campaign season is upon us.)  Some of it is pretty interesting.  I'm sure I'm in his database as "animal nut", but he actually took the trouble to tell me how much he is concerned about pets and their welfare in hurricane evacuations.

That's right--he doesn't really care about the people living along the coast in case of a hurricane, given his nay vote for hurricane relief.  They can just fuck off.  But suddenly the man loves kittens and puppies and is glad we're spending tax money to make sure they have safe shelter.  Very convincing.

He's just bizarre.

And yet how many times has the man run unopposed?  How many times have you had to undervote, just skip the whole House of Representatives box altogether because he was pretty much the only one there?  Didn't it make you feel a little sick, a little sad, a little frustrated?

Finally, finally, we have a real Democrat willing to run, and to serve when he wins.  We have been waiting for this opportunity for years, folks.  Paul is a bizarre idealogue too weird even for the radical right.  He has neither the will nor the power in Congress to help us.  Most of his campaign funds come from other Libertarians in other states.  That's right, from outside Texas.

He's taking the salary, and the space, but I'll be damned if he's representing us.  Shane will.

Shane Sklar is a longtime Democrat and a local rancher.  He is the real thing, and someone who understands what we on the coast need and want.  At this point, that matters a hell of a lot more than any specific quibbles we might have.

People with a vote in this matter should remember Hurricanes Claudette and Rita, the Taliban, and all the quotes El Jefe has outlined above.  We need someone to represent US, real Texas coasters.  Shane is that person.  Dr. No must go.
