Republican Super PAC Desperately Trying to Save Quico Canseco in District 23

by: Ben Sherman

Quico Canseco's lame, transparent speech at the RNC certainly informed national Republicans that he exists...and is in serious danger of losing his seat. A Republican Super PAC called Congressional Leadership Fund and its affiliated "nonprofit" group American Action Network are jumping into try and save Canseco's spiraling campaign. National Journal reports:

After unveiling its first general election TV ad of the cycle last Friday, the Congressional Leadership Fund and the American Action Network, a Republican super PAC and its affiliated non-profit, will expand their advertising push to $3 million across six House districts this week...CLF will release an ad in Canseco's district, backed by a $300,000 buy,...

$300,000 is no small chunk of change in a House race. Why are the Republicans so scared about losing this one? A few reasons.

1. They're worried about Hispanic Republicans elected in 2010, who have no business representing the districts they do, losing in 2012. This is fearsome because a 2012 election where Hispanic Republicans had their rear end handed to them will not be a good foreshadowing for the future of the party. If 2010 was really an aberration (and it was), even Republicans who have deluded themselves that they have a shot with the Latino community will be facing a hard reality.

2. Pete Gallego is coming for them. He is a strong progressive Democrat, convincing and likable, essentially making him the exact opposite of the charmless corporatist he's running against. The latest poll from the district also shows him ahead - and outside the margin of error. Check out this great new biographical TV ad that Gallego put out this week:

3. Republicans are doing everything they can to keep the House - which they may well lose. Even John Boehner admits there's a "one-in-three" chance Democrats will reclaim the House. The fact is that voters across the country fundamentally reject Republican policies and support progressive ones, when they are stripped of their media-provided titles. The Republican rhetoric of "less government and lower taxes" is not appealing to the American people because they know exactly what it means - robbing their opportunities so more money can be handed to the rich.

Tick tock, tick tock. Make sure you play your part in a Pete Gallego victory: contribute to his campaign via BOR's Burnt Orange to Blue fundraising effort.
