Burnt Orange Report Endorses Marc Veasey in CD-33 Runoff

Marc Veasey is a rock-solid progressive with a history of fighting for his constituents and working with the Democratic caucus. In this Democratic district, he is by far the best choice, and we urge voters to support him in the run-off.

We unanimously and enthusiastically endorsed Marc Veasey in the 11-way primary for CD-33, a minority-opportunity district spanning Tarrant and Dallas Counties. The runoff campaign between Veasey, currently a State Representative, and Domingo Garcia, a former State Rep, has only solidified our support. The run-off campaign has taken a turn for the ugly, due in large part to Garcia's use of the word "boy" to describe Veasey, as well as Garcia's attacks on area employers -- an odd message when Democrats nationally are focused on supporting President Obama's job-creation initiatives.

In a district drawn to elect a Democrat, it is our duty as party faithful to elect the best leader, the most progressive candidate, the person who will hit the ground running in DC and do the most to advance our shared Democratic ideals. The person who best brings all of those ideals together is Marc Veasey. As a State Representative, he served as floor whip to help keep our Democrats herded together to block Republican atrocities. This past session, he tirelessly fought back against redistricting efforts to fracture Sen. Wendy Davis's seat and other minority communities across Texas. He fought back passionately against Republican Photo Voter ID schemes designed to disenfranchise minority voters. Time and again, Marc Veasey demonstrates the best of our Democratic ideals.

Garcia has a checkered past, and was once referred to by Paul Burka as a "one-man leper colony" in the Legislature, an impressive distinction given some of the spiritually diseased individuals in the lower chamber. Garcia has also received the endorsements of some questionable "Democrats", one of whom backed Republican Tom Craddick for speaker over Pete Laney. In the run-off, Garcia has taken a turn for the divisive, suggesting through his actions that if elected, he will not be able or will be unwilling to address the needs and concerns of all constituents in the district.

The choice here is clear: Marc Veasey is the vastly better choice in CD-33, and we unanimously and enthusiastically encourage voters to cast their ballots for him in the run-off.

Early Voting in the primary run-off is Monday July 23 through Friday July 27. Election Day is Tuesday, July 31.

Endorsements are made based on a weighted consensus of the staff, which guides the type and tone of endorsement. Members of the Burnt Orange Report staff employed by campaigns abstain from voting on those races.
