LBJ Dean Appointed to State Department Post

by: David Mauro

Thu Dec 25, 2008 at 11:55 PM CST

After weeks of speculation, Jim Steinberg, a former Clinton State Department official who now serves as Dean of UT's LBJ School of Public Affairs, has been nominated Deputy Secretary of State.

Steinberg announced his departure in an e-mail to students and faculty, excerpted from Politico:

Tomorrow I anticipate that President-elect Obama will announce his intention to nominate me for the position of Deputy Secretary of State, an honor for which I am deeply appreciative. If confirmed (and as all good LBJ’ers know, it would be the height of hubris to presume how the Senate might act on my nomination), it will be a great privilege to serve with President Obama, Secretary of State-designate Clinton and the entire national security team at this time of great challenge but also of great opportunity for the United States and the world.

The full text of Steinberg's e-mail is after the jump.

Public service is at the heart of our mission, and in taking up this position I follow in the footsteps of so many LBJ faculty and alumni who have and continue to answer the call. I’m delighted to be able to join our colleague Jeanne Lambrew and LBJ Foundation Board member Tom Daschle in the new administration, and express my appreciation to Ben Sasse, who has served so ably at HHS during the Bush administration.

The past three years as Dean of the LBJ School have been among the most rewarding experiences of my life. I am grateful for the support and encouragement that my family and I have received from every element of our community – students, staff, faculty, alumni, the LBJ Foundation, colleagues at UT and friends of the School. Together, we have built on the LBJ School’s great tradition to establish an even stronger foundation for the School’s future. Through our new MGPS degree program and our enhancements to the MPAff and PhD programs, new research centers, including the Strauss Center and the Center for Politics and Governance, strengthened fellowship support and alumni outreach, new faculty hires and, not least, the long awaited renovation of our facility, the LBJ School is poised to remain one of the most influential schools of public affairs for years to come.

We have come far, but there is even more we can accomplish together. It is my hope and plan to return to the LBJ School following my time in Washington to continue to work with you all in this exciting endeavor. Over the next few weeks I will be talking with President Powers, Provost Leslie and the LBJ Foundation about our own “transition” arrangements, including what I believe will be a very exciting approach to teaching the course I planned to offer this spring. I expect to be in and out of Austin between now and the inauguration, and plan to hold a get together at the School during the first week of class in January to discuss the transition and to hear your thoughts about keeping the School moving forward.

I look forward to staying in touch with you all, and supporting (consistent with all the appropriate conflict-of-interest caveats!) the work of the School while I am at the State Department.

Thank you again for your friendship and support.

Jim

Is this the Obama administration or the Clinton administration? (1.00 / 4)
It's beginning to look like the Clinton administration. We not only appear to have another "decider" coming into office but another "decider" whose decisions are actually someone else's. If we'd wanted a Clinton administration we would have voted for Hillary during the primary. Something Barack Obama seems to have forgotten for some reason.

You know... (3.00 / 2)
I am getting real sick and tired of hearing this crap.  I know lots of conservatives and Republicans who are impressed with Obama's picks thus far because they are not all alligned with his ideals or thought process.  Obama is being true to his word and picking people that will most likely challange him and not agree with him at all times.  Look at what talking heads got us for the past 8 years.

Bottom line is that Jim Steinberg has the resume for this job and will be a good pick for it.  Obama seems to be picking qualified people for these positions and we should be praising him for it.

Rather than bitching about whos coming from the Obama camp and whos coming from the Clinton camp, lets look at the credentials of these people.  Lets also be proud of the fact that a Longhorn has a high position in this administration.

Obama has an 82% approval rating (0.00 / 0)
The vast majority of people -- Democrats and Republicans -- seem content with his appointments.

Are you honestly surprised he has appointed people who worked for the last two term president since FDR? What was he supposed to do? Appoint a bunch of people with no experience? Are you honestly surprised he has appointed people who have are close to Hillary Clinton, who received the second most votes in primary history (second to Obama).

Some of Obama's picks are too moderate for me, but overall I think he is doing a great job. And I'm not alone, not by a long shot.

Let's see what the % is in June... (0.00 / 0)

Stunned is a better word and I don't which "last two term president" you are referring to but I don't believe the only people in this country who have any experience are the ones who served in the Clinton administration. Certainly not the ones who served in the Bush administration.

Are you honestly surprised he has appointed people who have are close to Hillary Clinton, who received the second most votes in primary history (second to Obama).

I suppose the one with the most votes gets the White House, the one with the second most votes gets the administration?

This country is collapsing along with the economy.  Both the Clinton and Bush administrations weakened the foundations which have allowed the walls to collapse.

But they didn't act alone - the best example of that is our Congress which is bankrupting all of us along with our children and grandchildren simply to keep the appearance that there really isn't a recession and really isn't a depression and we can just bail everyone out and everything will be fine.

Your children will wonder if you had lost your mind looking back on this when the bill arrives. Your grandchildren will curse you. And probably change their names.

Do you think these people will admit to mistakes and move to correct them or take the attitude that they were right and move to do whatever they can to prove they were right?

Most will take the attitude that they were right and move to do whatver they can to prove they were right.

All you have to do is look at Congress to know that.

The worst of the lot is from the Bush administration - the American people very clearly, and very loudly, said they wanted the troops home and this "war on terror" ended. And who did Obama appoint to become Secretary of Defense? No one. He kept the Bush Department intact.

Welcome to Vietnam folks. Halliburton is making much too much money again to let the war end.

President for all the people (0.00 / 0)
The last time I checked Obama is the president for all the people and should pull from a diversity of views to provide a government for all the people. I'm sorry some of the choices don't fit your bill but you are but one voice. You may claim that he has sold out but in the end I believe the aggregate of his views are more in line with your thoughts than some others.

Personally if we had only the choices you propose I know a lot of people would be whining like you are now. Sorry but polarized government is not good government. I read today in a conservative blog about reaching across the aisle. That is commonly a practice exercised by the winning side to help bring together a coalition government. One side or even one faction doesn't have all the solutions. We get them from a lot of sources. Honestly, some Rs actually have some good ideas believe it or not. I'm not so stupid to only believe the Ds are the only game in town. That's not the way to achieve success. It shuts out good ideas.

Besides based on your comments no one is worthy of the task. I don't think you've had a kind comment about any appointment thus far. If that's the case you better get ready for 8 years of Obama because he's running with some of the highest approval ratings of a president-elect I've seen.

One last thing, you know darn well who David was referring to when he mentioned "two term president." Cut him some slack on comments like that.

Maybe I'm one voice here. But not elsewhere. There are quite a few voices on Democratic Underground voicing the same concerns. And they are legitimate concerns. Particularly with regard to the Defense Department.

Not everyone has kept Bubba of Arabia and his Secretary of State on their lofty pedestals. Particularly not after he finally released his donor list. A picture is worth a thousand words. And those thousands of pictures of George HW Bush and Bill Clinton finally started talking loud and clear to those who looked at that donor list.

Sorry but Republicrats don't cut it.  And that is what we are seeing finally. A government run by Republicrats.

By the corporation, for the corporation. Of late it seems to be more for the corporate crooks. And for Bubba of Arabia. With his "cash and carry" camel that he rides around the Persian Gulf on. A Brinks truck would probably be more appropriate with all the cash he collects.

And of course he is soon to embark on another caravan. With his Secretary of State. And a "Two for One Sale" sign attached to the camel.

re: (0.00 / 0)
First of all, I mean last two term Democratic president since FDR. Sorry for the mistype.

Serving in the Clinton Administration does not make you unqualified to serve in the Obama Administration.

Thankfully Obama realizes that and (though I disagree with some of his appointments) has assembled a great team.

Randy is right. Obama is working hard to a "president for all the people." Give him some time.

Of course his approval rating is not likely to be 82% in June but I expect it will still be high, well above 50%.

Hillary won the popular vote (0.00 / 0)
I'm surprised and disappointed that you would say Hillary won the second most votes in primary history, David.  She won the popular vote.

Christmas gift - Team of Rivals (3.00 / 1)
I asked for and received Team of Rivals for one of my gifts this year. It's a hefty read and I'm just starting it but Obama appears to be following Lincoln's concept of bringing rivals together to foster a more cohesive and complimentary administration. Personally I like the approach. Good ideas come from all over the place and some difference of opinion is a good thing.

A lot of reading to do but that's what the holiday breaks are for.
