Today, Austin is Made in the Shade!

(Anyone else have reports from the campaigns over the weekend? Apparently today was also Randi Shade's birthday.   - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

Today is a big day for the Randi Shade campaign, as the candidate for Austin City Council travels across our city meeting voters at a series of neighborhood block parties in order to genuinely listen to their concerns. This morning's event was hosted by my friends Ian and Amy at their home. There was great turnout - folks came from across Austin to get to meet Randi, and the event was attended by a lot of Ian and Amy's neighbors with real concerns about what's going on in our city.

More pictures and how Randi addressed their concerns below.

Ian and Amy did a fantastic job of promoting the event, and brought in a wide variety of their neighbors. Many of the folks were genuinely undecided, and wanted to hear how Randi might react to their questions. Honestly, I was really impressed with the depth and breadth of knowledge that Randi showed about all of their issues, from the city's failure to properly enforce ordinances to specific residential parking models.

Voters talk about the issues and read up on
where Randi stands.
Randi arrives and is greeted by supporters.

What I noticed about Randi was her real concern and attentiveness to these fellow Austinites as they related their own experiences trying to manage traffic, development, emergency response, and other pressing issues. She didn't merely agree with the voters in an attempt to pander to them. Rather, she spoke at length about the nuances of each issue and noted the need for new ideas on how to solve these problems, new ideas which she then shared with the group.

Randi's logo is pretty rad. (Just like Austin!)Randi and her partner Kayla talk to a
neighborhood resident about her concerns.

One person asked how Randi might specifically address poverty in Austin, one of the cornerstones of her campaign. This was a tough question - lots of politicians give lip-service to helping the poor, but how many actually do anything about it? Randi talked about how we need to stop duplicating efforts between the city and non-profits, and look to be more efficient both administratively and in terms of who is best situated to provide services. Her career working in public, private, and non-profit industry, and her board memberships and participation in a wide variety of community groups leaves her well-positioned to work on this problem, building on the relationships she's developed over the past two decades.

Randi making good on her campaign promise to
listen...
...and offer sensible and innovative solutions
to our problems.

It wasn't all wonkery, however - today is also Randi Shade's birthday! She was presented with a card and a few donations from excited citizens, and also a fantastic tres leches cake from a local bakery. (I forget the name - can someone who was there tell me? It was really, really good, and I want more of that cake!)

All in all, a great time. It's so fun seeing citizens getting informed and asking questions about the issues that are right for them. I early-voted for Randi this week, but today made me wish I could go vote for her all over again! (I won't, don't worry.)

Thanks Everyone for Coming! (0.00 / 0)
Thank you so much to everyone who was able to make it! Randi loved meeting everyone and discussing the issues facing our neighborhood and city at large. We had a great turnout - a perfect mix of new voters and old activists. I love that we had a few that hadn't voted in City elections before and some definite undecides who left impressed and even left some checks!

Of course, we were all in a great mood because its her birthday too! The cake was a big hit, breakfast tacos from Torchy's were yummy as usual, and in case anyone is wondering, the Tres Leches from La Mexicana is amazing. We didn't have a piece to spare!

Randi left our house and had 3 other house parties to attend today. Randi's taking Austin by storm!

And props, Kath, on your great title! ;)

This was a great event - great turnout, great discussion and most importantly, great food.  It was really refreshing to see so many people come out from the neighborhood and have some face time with a candidate.

Oh, and Happy Birthday, Randi!

Happy Birthday Randi! (3.50 / 2)
What a beautiful day for a South Austin neighborhood house party.  We celebrated Randi's birthday, ate some breakfast tacos and then block-walked South Austin.  Thanks to all the volunteers who gave up their Saturday to make a difference!

That's right! (0.00 / 0)
I forgot to mention the excellent breakfast tacos. And fruit! That fruit was really good.

I should point out that I didn't show up just for the free food, I showed up for the great candidate. :-)

Ken Weiss Place 3 (1.17 / 6)

If you want a candidate that is Honest, Truthful, and loyal then you should vote for Ken Weiss for Austin City Council Place 3!

While Jennifer Kim and Randi Shade have been throwing mud around Ken Weiss has been speaking with the neighborhoods  and addressing the issues!

Wow, imagine that, a person running for Austin City Council who is concerned about the issues and not throwing mud at the other two candidates!

You want COMMON SENSE on Austin City Council then elect Ken Weiss for Place 3!

Randi's awesome! (0.00 / 0)
You go, girl. Wish I could've made it on Saturday,it looks like it was so much fun. I early voted for RANDI and I took two friends with me - if every RANDI supporter does the same, this election's in the bag.

And to the Mr. Weiss supporter, you make a valid point about researching other candidates, but your method (and your manners!) could use some work.
