Texas Young Democrats contribute $2,500 to Special Election Races

By Katie Naranjo

This week the board of the Texas Young Democrats PAC decided to contribute $2,500 to two candidates both engaged in Special Elections. The first recipient is Donna Howard running in HD 48, who is currently in a run-off due to her exceptional show in the election on Jan. 17th. The second recipient is Katy Hubener running in HD106 and is unopposed in the Democratic Primary and has great name ID in the district.

The board will give each candidate $2,500 to be used in the Special Election and the campaigns have already received the donations. TYD is very proud to support these candidates as they work against their opponents. The election date for HD106 is Feb. 28th and the election run-off date for Donna Howard is expected to be Feb. 14th.

These two special elections will set the pace for the rest of the cycle. If Democrats can pick up one or both of these seats, it gives Democrats a boost in Texas House races. Democratic victories in HD48 and HD106 will give Democrats and public school advocates momentum during the special session on school finance. Even more importantly, proving that Democrats can win in two suburban marginal seats will help our candidates running in similar seats across the state raise the money that they need to win - (and scare the bejesus out of at least a handfull of Republican incumbents).

I'd encourage all Democrats to join the Texas Young Democrats in making a financial commitment to Donna Howard and Katy Hubener. A small investment in these races today has a great chance of paying dividends later.

Two candidates, two special elections, the same team of strategists, the same chance to shift the political landscape for this entire election year.

Thanks for the post Katie -- glad to know our Annual Fundraisers aren't for nothing! :-)

Color me impressed! Back in my Young Democrat days (millions of years ago, when men were men and giants walked the Earth) we were lucky if we had enough money to print business cards, much less donate money to candidates. Good on you, YDs!

YDs do stuff like this all the time, only problem is no one ever knows....but that has changed. So watch out for some change in Youth politics.
