December 07, 2005UT Shutting Down as of 2 PM: UpdatedBy Karl-Thomas MusselmanTexan: The University will be closed due to weather concerns from 2 p.m. Wednesday until 10 a.m. Thursday. I'm sure the University Wide e-mail will be out shortly. Students may want to contact professors if you had tests or projects due during this time. It's going to be cold and slightly frozen out there, so stay warm, wrap the pipes, and bring your plants indoors (or put bags over them). It's already 34 degrees here in Austin, but real-feel is around 23. So instead of going to class, you can read this piece by the Bell campaign which knocks down some Perry claims. UPDATE Official University E-mail now out.
UPDATE:
If you've been trying to check your UT e-mail, the system is being strained and is not logging some people on. Be patient. Posted by Karl-Thomas Musselman at December 7, 2005 01:34 PM | TrackBackComments
I like to read this page because it keeps me up to date on what's going on down in Austin. That said, are you people pussies? It's 34 degrees and you're shutting down the university? When I went to catch the bus this morning, it was minus 5 with a windchill of minus 15 and everything is covered with snow and ice. Hell, it's not supposed to get over freezing until briefly this weekend. Granted I live in Wisconsin now, but I refuse to believe that people in my preferred city can't handle the possibility of a little cold. Posted by: Brendon at December 7, 2005 01:53 PMHmmm, I havn't gotten this email yet in my utexas acct. Brendon> Texans trying to drive on icy roads is like a scene out of Deathrace 2000. No different than when a heat wave comes thru the north and they all are having heat strokes at temperatures we consider a nice summer day. Posted by: me at December 7, 2005 02:01 PMHonestly. I live in the Texas panhandle, and when I went to class this morning snow flurries had begun and it was f-ing cold. I don't praticulalry like cold weather but I didn't turn the radio on waiting to hear that school was canceled. Unless the waether channel is wrong, you guys aren't even getting any precip. And a quick check of AISD looks like Austin school children have more than ya'll do. But hey more power to ya if you can get the administration to cancel classes and maybe even some finals because it's getting to cold. I guess I'm just jealous. Posted by: matthew_lt at December 7, 2005 02:43 PMKarl you linked to the story about UT shutting down. Not the Bell piece. A little hint to Chris Bell. We already know Rick Perry is corrupt. We knew it before you announced you were running for governor. But then the system is also corrupt. So who's to say that it's not the system itself at fault instead of Rick Perry? Maybe he thinks it's a good deal. No offense to the good governor but he, like his predecessor, really isn't the brightest light bulb. But he does have nice hair. I do agree that sleet conditions are reason enough to close down everything in Texas and declare martial law to keep people out of their cars. Most Texans don't know how to drive in rain let alone sleet. Being on a road in Texas during a sleet storm is like being in a bumper car at a carnival. You are guaranteed to have someone crash into you. Posted by: Baby Snooks at December 7, 2005 02:44 PM Man, it's 10 degrees here, pouring down snow, and my community college shut down at 2pm. And driving back was brutal and I live in Missouri too. Posted by: RBH at December 7, 2005 02:45 PMUNT and everything else up here in Denton shut down about two hours ago and earlier in the day. It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey and it's sleeting steadily right now. The ground is finally cold enough that it's sticking...and we're not supposed to get out of freezing until sometime tomorrow afternoon. The dangerous thing about Texas in this weather is, as others have alluded to above, that no one knows how to drive on it. My buddy and I saw someone take out a roadside sign on the way back from lunch...and that's with only patchy, very thin ice. It's gonna get ugly later on up here. Posted by: Patrick at December 7, 2005 03:46 PMWhen I went to UT they wouldn't shut down UT for anything. They were flying planes into buildings and they left it to profs to decide whether or not to cancel class. Posted by: matth at December 7, 2005 04:06 PMBe safe.
