December 26, 2005BORed: My ApologiesBy Matt HardigreeSometimes you make mistakes. In politics, you're always making mistakes. But the biggest mistake of all, might be to not admit your mistakes. This is the lesson of Nixon, of Clinton and, perhaps, of Hardigree. This is going to be all over the news, so I thought I should address this now. I made a call to Kinky's right-hand man Little Jewford and told him I thought he couldn't win the governor's race and should run for agricultural commissioner instead. First, let me premise this by saying that this isn't in anyway connected with any of the campaigns that I'm working with. Second, let me say that Little Jewford and I are old friends and we've done lots of charity work in the past. So, I didn't think this was a big deal. Honestly. I just told him what I felt to be the truth. I told him the words of that great Texan, Sam Rayburn (the longest serving and arguably most successful Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in history) when he said: "Any Jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a carpenter to build one." I said that we need men of action, not men with action figures. I also thought that Agricultural commissioner was a better fit for a man with his own line of salsa. I think that's true. He reminds me of a young Jim Hightower. Jim Hightower is America's favorite populist and Kinky is easily Texas' favorite Jew. I also want to mention a call I made to Shirley Schmidt, chair of the Burnet County Democratic Party, who I told should run for Lt. Governor. I said that there could be lots of money for someone pursuing that seat. I don't remember a specific number, let's just say somewhere between $1.0 and $400.0 million dollars. Which I think is true. So, there it is. I made a mistake. It's not my place and it looks suspicious. But, I'm apologizing. That's what is important. I mean, let's be honest. What the hell was I thinking? What did I think would happen? It's hilarious, if you think about it. Posted by Matt Hardigree at December 26, 2005 06:33 PM | TrackBackComments
I think yours is a reasonable suggestion. Kinky can demonstrate his ability to produce results in a political environment. Wow, I must have totally whiffed on the joke. Paul, your intentions seem good but I couldn't disagree more. First, Strayhorn couldn't win the Republican primary if her name was Rick Perry. Seriously, she's out. Second, "moving Texas" to the middle isn't the goal of Democrats in Texas. It's not about left or right, it's about what's best for Texas. Texas lacks good governance. If it weren't for Mississippi we'd be last in a lot of things and that's awful. I love Texas and I believe we need to offer GOOD alternatives to BAD Republicans. That's why I'm supporting Bell. Posted by: matth at December 26, 2005 07:44 PMI admit, I also called Kinky and asked him to run for the State Railroad Commission. :D Posted by: RBH at December 26, 2005 08:07 PMno you didn't whiff on the joke, i laughed my ass off. Posted by: J at December 26, 2005 09:48 PMIs this supposed to be a way to divert attention from what has to be the biggest embarrassment of Chris Bell's campaign so far? Intimating that Carole Strayhorn had a staffer, who just happpened to be a long-time friend, more than likely a former long-time friend, of Alison Bell's call her to convince her husband to drop out of the governor's race and run for comptroller instead so Carole Strayhorn could switch parties and run for governor as a Democrat and not worry about Chris Bell? Adn then we have a Republican county commissioner in San Antonio who says Mark Sanders called him also but can't say it was really Mark Sanders but only someone who said he was Mark Sanders. But of course "Mark Sanders" wanted him to run for comptroller as well. Gets a little muddled at that point. Mainly because if Carole Strayhorn wanted Chris Bell to drop out of the governor's race and run for comptroller, as Chris Bell says, why would she care if anyone else ran for comptroller? Carole Strayhorn made it clear none of any of this had any basis in fact and never had any basis in fact. She intends to challenge Rick Perry in the primary. The Republican primary. And don't count her out yet. She has two sons in the Bush Administration. And she could end up with an endorsement that could carry her through the primary and into the governor's mansion. But it sounded good at the time. Two newspapers carried the story. The Republican challenger to Rick Perry plannnig to switch parties and run as a Democrat and afraid of losing to Chris Bell so she conspired to have him run for comptroller instead. Chris Bell obviously has tremendous statewide support. And of course there is no other Democratic candidate. In fact there is and a viable one. If she were going to conspire to have anyone not run for governor if she were going to switch parties and run as a Democrat, she would have had the staffer call him. Not Chris Bell. Maybe Carole Strayhorn doesn't know that Bob Gammage is also running for governor as a Democrat? Oh what a tangled web we weave. And it sounds like Chris and Alison Bell wove one too many. The only joke in all of this is Chris Bell. Posted by: Baby Snooks at December 27, 2005 02:02 AMI admit I called Baby Snooks and suggested that there might be some money in it for her if she switched to writing dozens of longwinded posts on Little Green Footballs about what a joke of a candidate Joe Lieberman is. I'm in for $5. Any others want to sweeten the pot? Posted by: George at December 27, 2005 08:18 AMThe only thing clear in this whole mess is that Carole is crazy and I mean that in the clinical way. She is freaking nuts and her boi Mark “Johnny Walker” Sanders is just as nuts. Why would anyone want them near the pink palace? What ever her whim of the day is on the day when she files 2006 will prove a good year for Texans since she will be done with and her lunatic ranting will cease. Posted by: hamiltonfan at December 27, 2005 10:00 AM"She is freaking nuts and her boi Mark “Johnny Walker” Sanders is just as nuts." Same thing some say about Chris Bell and his "bois." Posted by: Baby Snooks at December 27, 2005 10:32 AMIf Strayhorn did the fence jump again back to the Democrats, she would win the primary. I still state that Chris Bell's only claim to fame is whining about DeLay only after he got redistricted out of his seat. You dont win Governors races on sour grapes. He might be a good guy and have some decent ideas, but hes not the type of personality thats going to grab the attention of Texans. Posted by: John at December 27, 2005 11:05 AMWhoa, baby snooks, Bob Gammage has filed so there is another demo in the race. "Whoa, baby snooks, Bob Gammage has filed so there is another demo in the race." I know that, you know that, Carole Strayhorn knows that. Apparently Chris Bell doesn't know that. Or doesn't want to acknowledge it. Again, if Carole Strayhorn were going to switch parties and wanted to get rid of a serous challenger, she would have wanted to get rid of Bob Gammage. Not Chris Bell.
Expecting sense and sanity from Texas politicos is like expecting tofu from a Texas BBQ, Baby Snark. Posted by: matth at December 27, 2005 03:43 PMBaby Snark must have hit a nerve somewhere. Posted by: Baby Snooks at December 27, 2005 10:47 PMyou manage to bang on almost everyone's nerves... repeatedly. Posted by: matth at December 27, 2005 11:24 PMGene Kelly filed to run for the Senate today. No word on if anybody asked him to run for another office instead. Posted by: RBH at December 28, 2005 10:10 PMTom says ". . . hamiltonfan, I only know one other woman that is crazier than Carol Four Names and that would be that misrepresentin, false pretensin screamer, HD106 candidate Katy Huebner. tom Posted by tom madrzykowski at December 27, 2005 03:22 PM" Unlike Perry, Strayhorn, or Kinky, Katy knows what party she belongs to. She also has the courage recognize such obvious principles as party chairs not endorsing republicans even when others just wanted her to play along. In one attack piece, Ray Allen claimed that Katy would have gone to Tulsa to fight against Tom Delay's unethical and illegal power grab. I have to agree, and to this day I think Katy may consider it an honor to have been retrospectively added to this group of heroes. She continues to spend immense effort running for a Legislative office that will certainly not pay a reasonable salary. Her principles and the loyalty of those who share them keep her going. If this is what you mean by crazy, then yes she is crazy and I want 10 more just like her. This hasn't hurt her ability to persuade and work across the political fence, as evidenced by her endorsement by the ever more right wing Dallas Morning News. People of all political stripes recognize and appreciate integrity. If this bothers you, Tom, you still have until tommorrow to file as a candidate against her in the primary.
