Armbrister Not Running in 2006

By Damon McCullar

Via The Victoria Advocate:

Ken Armbrister, the former Victoria policeman who rose to become the powerful chairman of the Texas Senate's Natural Resources Committee, will not seek re-election. "After 38 years of public service, it's time for new challenges," said Armbrister, in a news release issued late Monday afternoon. The senator said he has made no decisions on future plans, other than finishing his term, which ends January 2007. Armbrister, a Democrat, was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1983. Victoria-area voters sent him on to the Senate in 1986.

As glad as I am to see Sen. Armbrister and his conservative voting record go, it means that we will probably have a Republican take his seat in that very conservative district, putting the Democrats that much further from a majority in the Texas Senate.

Best of all, he's going to work for our republican governor!

It was impossible to count on him as D vote. On certain key votes, a new republican senator may be far better than Armbrister ever was.

This is good news for water rights, small business, and education.

How do you know he is going to work for Gov. Goodhair?

Rick Perry allegedly has offered Armbrister a job as legislative director.

Yeah, if Armbrister had fled to New Mexico, BORers would be singing his praises right now and conveniently forgetting to mention his abysmal record on the environment, choice, gay rights, education, small business, etc.

Wonder why he waited so long to make it public. He gave his notice to Dewhurst a week ago.

Robby Cook may have a shot. He would have to re-file. Isn't there a Victoria County DA looking at the race? I realize it's a likely GOP pick up.

to all those armbrister bashers out there, may i remind you that a conservative democrat in this seat is much better than a conservative republican holding the position.

and y'all shouldn't be so pessimistic about holding this seat. victoria, for one reason or another, is one of the last areas in the state where yellow dogs are still alive and well.

Pink Dome has a great list of links of why an Anybody but Armbrister sentiment is so pronounced here.

Sen. Armbrister constantly sold out the voters in his district for water jockeys and favors.

I would rather work with a fairminded Republican than Armbrister, but I would rather work with a good yellow dog than a Republican.

Forget about specific votes or philosophy -- Armbrister is right up there with Senators Farabee, Caperton, Harris of Dallas, McFarland, Montford and a small handful of others in modern times who can make the institution run. The Senate will be a weaker body without Kenneth Armbrister.
