Stallings Not Stalling Around

By Karl-Thomas Musselman

I'm back in Austin after an enjoyable break off in Fredericksburg where I had Thanksgiving Day dinner at the DoubleJade, which served a Chinese, German, Mexican, American, (and seafood) buffet.

Didn't catch this last week, but according to Matt Glazer down in San Antonio, Larry Stallings isn't wasting time in getting organized in HD 122. Matt's got some more biographical info as well, part of which I've clipped here.

Larry is a 58 year old father and grandfather. He was born and raised in Amarillo and graduated from Tascosa High School in 1966. Larry joined the Marine Corps immediately after graduation and served a total of 30 years in various military components, 20 of them as an Army Medical Service Corps officer. Stallings completed a Bachelor of Arts (Summa Cum Laude) degree, and a Master of Public Administration (Summa Cum Laude) degree while on military duty.

He was awarded more than two dozen medals and citations, served on two combat deployments and was awarded a Bronze Star and Legion of Merit.

Also not to forget, Republican Representative Ray Allen up in Dallas (HD-106) is going into retirement, creating an open seat for which Katy Hubener will be running again. Huebner garnered 47.5% against Allen back in 2004 in her first bid for political office, and should make this one of the top House races in Texas. Kuff has some info on that race from back before the break.

Stallings announced his campaign staff last week, too. The big surprise is his treasurer, who is a staunch Republican, always has been. He is a friend of over 25 years who served many times with Stallings in the Army, and knows him very well - well enough to back him in this race.

Stallings' son, a 17-year-old high school student, is going to coordinate volunteers. He is a political animal, who had a lot to do with convincing his father to run. He is a student at a magnet school in San Antonio.

Stallings' son-in-law is a converted Republican, actually having been a delegate some years back to a state convention. He withstood his wife's anti-Republican rants for years, only to succumb to the logic of the Democratic party after Bush trashed the country. He is going to be heading up all block-walking the campaign plans.

Diane, Stallings' wife, is campaign manager, even though she has no clue how to begin. She is a New Deal Democrat whose aunt was Chair of the Marin County (California) Democratic Party for years. Diane ate every Thanksgving as a child under a full-sized portrait of FDR over the dining room fireplace.

Stallings' daughter, Faith is managing communications. She works full time and is in school for her master's degree at UTSA, but is going to make the time to get her father elected.

It would be great to have professional staff running this campaign like Frank Corte does, but Stallings is great at "making do". And his backers, busy as they are, are committed to helping him win this race, and bring some real representation to TX 122.

By the way, the Texas Values in Action Coalition is raising money, recruiting, and training professional staff for House races in the DFW area. In the 106th, they had recruited Lt. Chris Combest to run before Ray Allen dropped out and before Katy decided to run again. Combest is an Iraqi war veteran who is supposed to finish his final mission within the next two weeks. They are also touting Paula Hightower, a strong candidate and very well known community leader, against Rep. Ken Marchant in the 93rd in Arlington, a district that is trending Democratic, as well as Harriet Miller's rematch against Goolsby in Dallas.

That's the other candidate. I knew there was a war vet in the Allen seat, thanks for the info. I'll take it as a good sign that there are primary battles up in Dallas for house seats.

Is it really wise for huebner to run in a district that on paper is still republican?

Would you like to ask that same question about Strama this time two years ago?

Ok.

Chris had a troubled youth, took thatlook back and made himself the man- husband-father and one of our protectors for freedom.

Express our thoughts and vote for who we choose!!
