November 10, 2005Republican Moderates Targeted by RPTBy Phillip MartinA story posted on Quorum Report confirms rumors I have heard that the Republican Party of Texas is targeting the moderate R's that voted their districts and voted with Democrats on school finance and property taxes. The RPT polled likely Republican primary voters in the weeks leading up to the Nov. 8 election, asking about Prop 2, school finance and property taxes, the Tom Delay trial, and even vouchers. According to my sources, the polls then concluded "would you vote for [name of moderate Republican incumbent] in a primary." During the Regular and Special Sessions, many moderate Republicans were called into the back hallways and threatened with primary challengers. Seems like Perry, Dewhurst, Craddick, and Leininger are making good on those threats. Personally, I hate to see this kind of stuff happening. It's one thing if you target incumbents that don't represent the best interests of the communities in their districts (that's why a few Democrat incumbents lost their primaries last go 'round). It's another if you target incumbents because they aren't falling lock-step in line with a group of lawmakers that could give a shit about what the communities and people of Texas want. If anyone who works for these moderate Republicans need some folks to vent about the out-of-touch Republican leadership, come by some of our offices. We'll share a drink. They're like Nazis. There is this agenda. Etched in stone. And those who don't support it face annihilation. Tom De Lay in fact threatened one representative in Congress with annihilation if he voted against certain legislation. So why should Austin be any different from Washington? Why should any capital be any different? If you listen to them carefully, everyone has an agenda. And yet never really talk about their own. Not that they need to. It is quite obvious what it is. They no longer listen to "Hail to the Chief." The listen to "Heil to the Chief." There is a movement in the Democratic Party to take a more moderate tone. To reflect more "traditional" values. Why? Those values have taken us to Afghanistan and Iraq and given us the Patriot Act and now a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and possibly quite a bit more along with it. And more to come. Holocaust Museum Houston issued a statement opposing Proposition 2. Did the major papers in Texas run that? I didn't see it. They have also been told to reflect more "traditional" values. Why? Those values have brought us censorship. Only hope for this country, and this state, is to start electing Democrats and Independents who know what real traditional values are in this country. The values put forth in the Constitution. The one written by the founding fathers. Not the one being written by George W Bush and Tom De Lay and Trent Lott and Pat Robertson. And the Pink Haired Circus Freak. When someone says they are against what is happening in this state as well as this country, ask them why they keep voting these people back into office. Ask them why they don't find someone else to run. We need people with principles. Principles that reflect the values put forth in the Constitution. Not what some "majority" says the are according to the Bible. And not what some campaign consultant tells them their principles should be. Posted by: Baby Snooks at November 11, 2005 02:12 AMLet the RPT eliminate the moderates. Let them set up the RPT as the party if rednecks, kooks, and Right wing fanatics. One can one hope that the RPT continual idelogical purging will make them less attractive to the non-insane of the state's electorate. Of course, expecting anything reasonable to come of of the Texas electorate is setting oneself up for some serious disappointment. My pessimism aside, the Dems must take this opportunity to establish themselves as the party of the mainstream (and resist the urge to "energize" a base by moving to the left). Posted by: Rip Avery at November 11, 2005 03:28 AMAnd yes, one can argue that the hating mongering, bigotry, and scapegoating is a bunch of Nazi bullshit, as well as the fanatical committment to the "message","agenda", etc. at the expense of acknowledging facts and/or reality. Disgusting that the GOP does it, but equally disgusting that voters buy into it. Posted by: Rip Avery at November 11, 2005 03:31 AMcorrection: hate mongering, not hating mongering man, I need some sleep Posted by: Rip Avery at November 11, 2005 03:32 AM...and the Dems are still trying to repackage their message: more taxes, terrorist appeasement, abortion on demand, gay marriage, socialized medicine..oh, yeah..and removal of the words "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance.. Posted by: Trey at November 11, 2005 09:36 AMYou forgot the most important thing. We want to outlaw religious bigots, "conservatives," a catch-all phrase if ever there was one, and deranged evangelists, or is that evangelistas, with pink hair. But we have our nice side. We will offer one-way tickets to Tehran to all you theocrats so you can enjoy true theocracy. As for appeasing terrorists, don't you find it a little odd that Halliburton has been doing business with Iran all these years? Despite the law saying they can't do business with Iran? Oh, I forgot. The law doesn't apply to Republicans. And Iran is an axis of evil except for business. Then apparently it becomes an axis of opportunity. Posted by: Baby Snooks at November 11, 2005 10:12 AMActually, Trey, the most important thing you forgot was quite simple: education. There's a clear line between the direction Democrats and Moderate Republicans want to go in public education, and what the RPT wants. Also, let's not forget, it was Craddick and House Republicans that proposed a tax bill that would have raised taxes on 90% of Texas families. Really, really, really, REALLY need to get new talking points, Trey. Posted by: UGL at November 11, 2005 11:10 AMPost a comment
