Hate Mail

By Karl-Thomas Musselman

Traditional Christian Values?

Yeah, I'll get right on defending those.

Lufkin Daily News: In this country, we need to move away from the morality issue of homosexuality, the "rightness" or "wrongness," of this issue. It is the "hate the sin, but love the sinner approach," except that the hate always precedes the love. It is the unpardonable sin of homosexuality, not blasphemy, according to social conservatives, but curiously ironic, not the "judge not, lest you be judged" mentality. The speck in your eye is always bigger than the plank in mine, so forgo the Bible verses on the sin of homosexuality.

Dustin of Odessa, TX
in supporting the amendment had this to say:

"I HATE FAG's...kiss my ass you fucking homo's!" Interesting apostrophe use there...

Barbara of Keller, TX
in supporting the amendment had this to say:

"Stop spreading AIDS you idiots! You willing aggressively spread AIDS...Drop dead NOW and spare a few!"

Alvin L. of Amarillo, TX
in supporting the amendment had this to say:

"Please do NOT send me any more of your junk-please no more gay stuff I pray that same-sex marriage will never be-Praise God and I pray you will fine Jesus and he will save you from your gay sins."

Who did this DM piece go to? It seems like the postage should not have been wasted on these folks and this FR letter probably prompted these folks to actually go vote for Prop 2...and all of their friends.

That I don't know. I would imagine it went to either former donors, Democrats, or maybe GLBT lists. You are always going to pick up some unexpected people in the mix (like people who sign up with campaigns just to keep tabs on them).

Posted by: Karl-T at November 6, 2005 09:40 PM

this was such a bad, bad email that the campaign sent out. Such a shame they did this right after Glen's really good personal letter. This election's lost anyway so I guess it doesn't matter.

Posted by: condisshoes at November 6, 2005 09:41 PM

Be nice. Alvin is praying for you and your gay sins. That has to feel good. I haven't ever received personal notice that someone was praying for my sins, gay or otherwise. You should really check out a post by a UT law student at http://kevclark.blogspot.com/2005/11/proposition-2.html

Why does the person who sent back the third letter want us to fine Jesus? Maybe he's a money-changer.

Posted by: Fine Bottled Water at November 6, 2005 10:00 PM

The fining Jesus one was excellent. I love how the hate gets in the way of spellcheck.

Posted by: Karl-T at November 6, 2005 10:05 PM

Their grammar is dreadful. Morons.

You can't do mass mailings without sending some to the opposition. It's impossible because you never how a person actually votes. This one is very difficult to target. You may send something to a homophobic Democrat or miss a sympathetic Republican with a gay child.

If you worry about motivating people to vote against you, you've already lost.

As for the content of the mailing, I won't comment, didn't read it close enough.

I think these a classic examples of the failures of the Texas Public Education System.

Posted by: Monty at November 7, 2005 11:52 AM

I, myself, am proof of the failures of the Texas Public Education System.

My previous post should have read as follows:

"I think these 'are' classic examples of..."

Posted by: Monty at November 7, 2005 01:17 PM

Why is that you think you're the only ones getting "hate speech" -- here's a sample of my mail on the For Prop 2 side - FU F****** biggots, lots of lovely anti-christian slogans such as skull****babyjesus, etc.

We just don't constantly whine/complain like you do!

There are extremists on both sides of this issue spouting hate, fyi.

Posted by: Edward at November 7, 2005 01:35 PM

Where does Chris Bell stand on Prop 2?
And where has Chip Staniswalis come down on the issue?

Posted by: Curious at November 7, 2005 01:57 PM

Chris Bell makes a mean waffle. I think I had read hes against Prop 2 but not got gay marriage at all. I would need some heavy syrup for that view.

As for the stupid hate mail, its just that. Stupid. The sad part is ignorant people do vote. So we just have to make sure that you vote every chance you get.

I was very pleased at the protest Saturday in Austin. I drove from Dallas and was well worth being on the front of that march with 3000 behind me. Granted it was Austin, but tells me that TX is not as bigoted as one might think.

It always amazes me how the BORLib bloggers never cease to tie supporters of Prop. 2 to extremists. If one were to turn the tables and make an assumption for BORLib's view, then one would assume that BORLib endorses gay marriages by their opposition to Prop. 2 and could even carry it a step further and say that the BOR stands shoulder-to-shoulder with NAMBLA (the North American Man-Boy Love Association). Sheesh.
C'mon, Libs. Get a grip..unless you like your candidates to keep losing elections.

Posted by: Trey at November 7, 2005 04:21 PM

Can someone get Trey to analogy school. His comparisons just continue to confuse me...

That being said, the point Edward made that folks who are anti-Prop 2 also send out hate-mail can't be ignored. Writing "I hate Christians and their bullshit beliefs" is no better than writing "I hate gays and their bullshit beliefs." Can't condone one and not the other -- at least, we shouldn't. Calling out religous folks and saying they're hateful bigots and mocking their faith isn't progress. It's hypocritical ignorance, and it won't get anyone anywhere.

Fact is, there's lots of hate on both of the extreme sides of the issue, which is unnecessary. Opponents of Prop 2 merely have to point at the fact that there isn't a single justifiable reason that outlawing all gay marriage, civil unions, and common-law marriages is good public policy. Given that, and given that we shouldn't pass laws that aim to discriminate, then people shouldn't vote for Prop 2.

Posted by: Phillip Martin at November 7, 2005 04:50 PM

I wrote an a position paper on why prop. 2 is unnecessary, regardless of how you feel about gay marriage. I think it creates a clear argument withouit bashing liberals or conservatives. Take a look at https://webspace.utexas.edu/dwagg/prop2.html
