Cornyn Linked

By Karl-Thomas Musselman

From the Statesman...

Former Christian Coalition director Ralph Reed claimed in a 2001 e-mail to a lobbyist that he choreographed John Cornyn's efforts as Texas attorney general to shut down an East Texas Indian tribe's casino.

The lobbyist was Jack Abramoff, who is under federal investigation, along with his partner Michael Scanlon, on allegations of defrauding six Indian tribes of about $80 million from 2001 to 2004. The e-mail, along with about a dozen others, was released last week as part of the investigation.

In 2001, Abramoff was working as a lobbyist for the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana to prevent rival gaming casinos from siphoning off its Texas customers. He paid Reed as a consultant, and Reed lobbied to get the Alabama-Coushatta and Tigua casinos closed in Texas.

In the Nov. 30, 2001, e-mail, Reed told Abramoff that 50 pastors led by Ed Young, of Second Baptist Church in Houston, would meet with Cornyn to urge him to shut down the Alabama-Coushatta tribe's casino near Livingston. He said Young would back up the request in writing.

"We have also choreographed Cornyn's response. The AG will state that the law is clear, talk about how much he wants to avoid repetition of El Paso (where the Tigua casino was) and pledge to take swift action to enforce the law," Reed wrote. "He will also personally hand Ed Young a letter that commits him to take action in Livingston."

And Ron Kirk's oppo research effort couldn't find this why?

Posted by: Harriet Miers' Law Partner at November 13, 2005 05:56 PM

Probably because DNC gave all its money to Chris Bell and Ron Kirk couldn't afford opposition research. It's a shame the Houston Chronicle didn't run the story. And I bet they won't either.

Ed Young certainly is a good reason to force the issue of separation of chuch and state along with the 49 other "men of God." Who seem to be more "men of money and the politicians it buys."

For what it's worth, a lot of Republicans are not happy with Cornyn. Or De Lay. Or Perry.

But the Democrats for some reason don't seem able to find qualified challengers or simply don't seem able to find the money to elect them.

And Ron Kirk's oppo research effort couldn't find this why?

Maybe because Kirk's oppo researchers had no legal means to get their hands on Ralph Reed's emails? I'm just saying. Who here had even heard of Jack Abramoff in 2002?

Posted by: Charles Kuffner at November 14, 2005 08:19 AM

"Who here had even heard of Jack Abramoff in 2002?"

Probably true. But then who anywhere even gave a second thought to lobbyists in 2002 except to casually make jokes about them? Jokes that really weren't funny then and really aren't funny now. Any more than the jokes about attorneys. But then the two seem to go together, don't they?

My point is that Ron Kirk really didn't seem to have a well-funded, or well-supported, campaign.

Posted by: Baby Snooks at November 14, 2005 09:47 AM

This is silly. This Reed guy was predicting what a conservative office holder would do on a predictable issue. And getting paid for it. It that not what very lobbyist and lawyer get paid to do?

Ron Kirk ran a lousy campaign that was dragged down by "Money Bags Tony" the biggest scandal from that race is that those bandits that stole all that money from of "Money Bags Tony" and they never wore masks.

When will the politlcal types tell those crooks who still creep and crawl around the party trying to take money to line their pockets and leave nothing for the grassroots or message.

Stop bellyaching about 2002! There are bigger problems facing us in 2006 and 2010. When will the bad actors be banished from these campaigns of good hearted folks who get ruined and whacked by the repubs. only to have their former consultants laughing all the way to the bank while spending the next four years trashing the candidates who hired them?

The Coordinated Campaign, a-k-a Dream Ticket, had plenty of money to screw up on their own. The DNC gave money to Chris Bell and that's why Ron Kirk lost? That's hilarious. Maybe the DCCC gave his campaign money and helped keep that a Democratic seat, but John Sharp used Tony Sanchez' money to pay teenagers $85 a day plus lunch to goof off in neighborhoods and loaf around. What was the price tag? Over a $100 million dollars?
2002 Campaign - the worst debacle ever and I agree with HamFan.

What does John Sharp have to do with Ron Kirk?

Posted by: Baby Snooks at November 14, 2005 12:41 PM

The coordinated campaign was his bright idea to get himself elected.

Posted by: Marie at November 14, 2005 12:57 PM

Ron Kirk was running for the US Senate. Apart from anything going on in the state races, that was a very important race. The Democrats could have not only picked up a vital Democratic seat in the Senate and given Texans some sense of balance but there would have been two African-American senators. I would think the DNC would have made sure Ron Kirk had what he needed.

Reality may be some Democrats preferred a white Republican over an African-American Democrat.

The DCC gave Chris Bell $1+ million. How much did it give to Ron Kirk?

Posted by: Baby Snooks at November 14, 2005 01:16 PM

Kirk nearly spent Cornyn dollar for dollar, raising and spending over $9 million.

This isn't a Chris Bell thread BS.

The D-Trip is for Democratic Congressional candidates, thus the name. The DSCC is responsible for fundraising efforts for Senate candidates. You don't even know what your talking about and I'm tired of explaining things to you.

Posted by: Marie at November 14, 2005 01:47 PM

"The DSCC is responsible for fundraising efforts for Senate candidates."

Alright, then how much did DSCC give him?

"Kirk nearly spent Cornyn dollar for dollar, raising and spending over $9 million."

Money is all. Cornyn was big guns as they say. The Democrats should have put more behind Kirk. My impression, and my opinion, is that they didn't.

There were probably some conservative Democrats who voted for Cornyn. There may have been some moderate Republicans who might have voted for Kirk instead had they known there were questions about where his loyalties lay. As in Tom De Lay. And Tom De Lay may have a lot of support in his district. He doesn't have a lot of support statewide. Particularly among moderate Republicans. And the questions probably could have been raised in 2002. No doubt they will be next time.

A lot of Republicans are not happy with Cornyn. A good Attorney General does not a good Senator make. He seems to have become merely another mynah bird for Bush. And for De Lay.

Posted by: Baby Snooks at November 14, 2005 02:12 PM

Mynah Bird indeed! That's the best one I've heard in at least a couple of days. In his cold, cold, heart, Cornyn's a hapless, light weight, forked tongued liar, albeit with a silver haired, country club and very Republican/Bigot pedigree.

Stop your bickering. Time to tear the roof off this suck-up sucker!
