Bring the pain

By Jim Dallas

I swear, if A&M goes into the second half ahead (which they could do) -- I'll just choke.

Update: Well, the Aggies blew a perfectly good drive. Still, after all the gloom-and-doom predictions by (and for) the A&M faithful, you'd expect the Longhorns to be up by more than 21-15.

Update 2: I fell asleep in the middle of the second half after it started to look like the game might be in hand. The H-Chron and CNN-SI have write-ups.

Altogether it was, as one commenter notes, a good game. Moreover, it was a game where - despite the rivalry - you really could root for both sides. The Aggies continued a wonderful tradition (by which I mean "playing their hearts out as underdogs," not "losing to Texas") and that's commendable.

Go Aggies!!!!!!

Posted by: Dave N. Buster at November 25, 2005 05:33 PM

As a Former Student, that was a damned good game. Sure, I would have loved to see A&M pull out a victory, but there's expectation and then there's imagination! It was a helluva lot better than what I expected (something along the lines of UT's whooping of OU, only worse).

I still think y'all down in Austin will beat USC, but I'm not quite as convinced as I was before this afternoon.

I'll be pulling for UT versus USC because, when it comes down to it, you have to root for Texas teams before you root for non-Texas teams.

Posted by: Patrick at November 25, 2005 05:37 PM

congrats to the aggies on yet another moral victory.

Jim, you had it right the first time as far as continuing the tradition. The record of the "rivalry" is now 73-34-5 in favor of Texas.

This game was an aberration. We have not played this badly in quite a while. We played our worst game while they played their best and we still won. That should count for something, but there's a lot of work to be done before the Big 12 and National Championship games.

Hook 'em

Posted by: Sal D at November 25, 2005 08:52 PM

BTW, Jeb Hensarling was the intended target of the "Howdy Doody-looking nimrod" insult (from Rep. Marion Berry).

While I am not sure about Mr. Hensarling's resemblance to Howdy Doody, I will say that Jeb has experience with being a puppet.

Posted by: RBH at November 25, 2005 09:05 PM

Hook 'em baby! Yeah, we should have won by more, but we still won. A win is a win. Go Horns!!!

Posted by: Byron L at November 25, 2005 09:50 PM

Poor Aggies! Poor Aggies!

Great job rednecks, but almost only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. Maybe next year, but probably not.

HAHAHAHA

Posted by: Andrew Dobbs at November 25, 2005 09:53 PM

A&M was a 5-6 without its starting quarterback and, after the first quarter, its starting running back.

A&M ran all over the Texas defense with a freshman QB and a true freshman RB, both who are backups.

Now, think what Reggie Bush and Lendale White will do.

USC 45, Texas 17

Posted by: David at November 25, 2005 10:11 PM

David, are you sure you want to get on the "hate texas" bandwagon, especially at this point? You'll only end up looking like a fool come January.

Posted by: Sal D at November 26, 2005 01:55 AM

I would also like to remind the "UT Haters" that it is nationally ranked #1 USC that has had three very close calls at being upset - Texas has only had one and that margin of victory was still larger than any of the edge of the seat victories USC pulled.

Posted by: JG at November 26, 2005 01:54 PM

With margins like these (NCAA Division I rankings):

UT overall offense, run, pass: 2 / 2 / 36;
A&M overall defense, run, pass: 109 / 44 / 117;

A&M overall offense, run, pass: 16 / 11 / 66;
UT overall defense, run, pass: 6 / 20 / 6;

And a freshman QB starting his first game;

And a backup RB playing most of the game;

You ought to get more than 40-29. Y'all were lucky A&M racked up so many penalties. I wouldn't count on the same kind of yellow flag charity from USC.

I still think y'all will beat USC, but whatever needs to be fixed needs to be fixed in a hurry!

Posted by: Patrick at November 26, 2005 08:46 PM

Sal,
Oh no, I've been on the hate Texas bandwagon since birth ... no, im kidding. But in all seriousness, its hard to spin the A&M game as a sign that Texas will handle USC with ease. A&M, with the worst pass defense in Division I, held VY to 168 yards passing. They also held him to only 19 yards rushing. A&M made some really sloppy mistakes and had a lot of penalties. Of course, that is something you would expect from a 5-6 team. I wouldnt expect it from USC. Thats all I am saying.
Plus, JG may want to recall the Ohio St game. And no team has struggled as much with Okie St in a single half (not even Florida International!) than UT did last month. Bottom line: Texas is a great team and Vince Young is a great qb and an even better leader, and Michael Griffin is probably the best DB in America. I still stand by my pick of USC by 28 though. Please, everyone, write this down.

I'm an Aggie and enjoyed the close contest at Kyle Field on Friday. I'm also a fan of the Horns and have rooted for them this season (aside from Friday). While it would have been nice to see the Ags pull it out, I didn't want the Horns to lose b/c I want to see them battle USC for the National title. What a game that will be!

However, when I read through the comments here and listen to other Horns bashing on the Ags, it makes me less of a Horns fan...

Posted by: Sam at November 27, 2005 10:23 AM

If the "aggie bashing" on this site makes you like UT less, I'd avoid attending a UT-A&M game at UT.

That being said, I agree that this was a close call, and we played rotten -- of course, when it's an early morning road game, against the rival, after not playing for two weeks, that's understandable (to some extent). USC, and now Texas, go into their games with more pressure to win than any team in the country. It's not surprising to see some close games from both schools.

We still should have played better, and we will. Vince couldn't pass the ball, which was the biggest concern -- we need him to be able to throw. I'd still expect one hell of a game come January, though.

Hook 'em!

Posted by: Phillip Martin at November 27, 2005 05:13 PM

Sam,
There actually tends to be more UT bashing here than A&M bashing. Excluding Mr. Dobb's snobbery, there really isn't any Aggie bashing. In fact, Jim and Sal gave yall quite the compliments, which I agree with completely. The Aggies put up a good fight and if it wasn't for the whole Rose Bowl thing, I might have actually put aside my burnt orange-ness for a bit and rooted for the underdogs a little. Wow, can't believe I actually admitted that. Hook 'Em.

are you kidding?

Posted by: gabe at November 28, 2005 08:41 AM

The longhorns shud shut up and go home crying win USC kills them in the Rose bowl saw em off

Posted by: john at November 28, 2005 10:31 AM

I am a longhorn fan but we should not be hard on A&M> They played a great game under the circumstances and they are Texas boys. INdeed,they did the horns a great favor. I If Texas plays as they did last Friday USC will run them out of the stadium. Pete Carroll is a great pro-coach and the Trojans will be ready for Texas. The horns will have to play the game of their lives and even then the game will be in doubt. Anybody that thinks otherwise is delusionary.

Posted by: J W at November 28, 2005 11:15 AM

While aggies makes excuses, Texas just wins.
