Rev. Tom Heger: For Real

By Karl-Thomas Musselman

Proponents of Prop 2 claim the "Reverend" is a fraud. If you can't attack the message that the Marriage Amendment threatens marriage, attack the messenger. Except, the messenger is quite real.

The Statesman has a full bio on Rev. Tom Hager, a former Austin Presbyterian pastor. You can listen to his message here (.wav) and read the script as follows.

I’m Reverend Tom Heger. Rick Perry and the Legislature made a blunder in writing the gay marriage amendment. Don’t Risk It. Vote Against It.

They left off words that would have made sure it applied only to gays. A greedy insurance company, tricky divorce lawyer, or a liberal Austin activist judge can easily use these words to overturn traditional marriage and cause people to lose health insurance, tax breaks, and pensions.

The status quo protects everyone's marriage. Don't Risk It. Vote Against It. God bless you. Read it for yourself at Save Texas Marriage.com.

Want further proof, how about his bio? It's in the extended entry. This should put to rest the concerns of those that feel he is a pretend minister or a front for some devious scheme which is so far off the mark they don't even have a clue.

Yay for him speaking out against this idiotic amendment! It makes me proud to be Presbyterian.

Why did the campaign think it was a good idea to robo-call 2 million homes without any reference to the amendment number?

The voters it went out to should be aware which amendment it was, there is only one that anyone is talking about and by the time they vote, they will be very aware of it.

I can't believe I just read all of those absurd comments over at lonestartimes. Talk about aggravating and clueless. I feel dumber now.

A few months ago, gay leadership was proclaiming the ammendment battle as a great educational oppoortunity while advancing the comic idea that if we lost, we would really be losing forward. Now we find out that Glen Maxey's strategy all along was to confuse Texas voters into thinking that a vote against the ammendment is a vote for traditional marriage. The idea of losing forward and voter education has ended up on the scrap heap. Once again, a smug cadre of civil rights activist wannabes, born too late for the real movement, has produced an issue to con paychecks out of overly sentimental liberals. It's time for the gay community to move on.
