October 10, 2005Open ThreadBy Karl-Thomas MusselmanToday is a busy day for some of the writers including myself as we catch up from this weekend. Remember, tomorrow is the last day to register to vote in the November 8th election. What's going on in your neck of the woods? WWW.STOPRALPHREED.COM Did you know that Ralph Reed is running for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia? The same Ralph Reed that has strong ties to Jack Abramoff (he used to crash on Jack’s couch in college and even introduced him to his future wife), the same Ralph Reed who is the former head of the Christian Coalition, and the same Ralph Reed who only watches Fox News. Reed wants to use this platform to run for Governor of Georgia and eventually the White House. Can you imagine Georgia producing President Jimmy Carter on one side and President Ralph Reed on the other? We’ve got to stop Ralph Reed NOW! If you don’t want to see another hack in the White House, go to www.StopRalphReed.com. Turns out that the same fan that caught Lance Berkman's grand slam in the 8'th inning of yesterday's Astros-Braves game also caught Chris Burke's game-winning home run in the 18'th inning. That's pretty incredible... (Hey, this is an open thread...you think I'm thinking about anything else after that game? I had to struggle to remember the UT-OU score this morning...). Posted by: Phillip Martin at October 10, 2005 03:09 PMIn addition to a draught-ending win by Texas and an historic win by the Astros, the Dallas Cowboys played their best game in probably 6 or 7 years on Sunday. There was literally not a single aspect of the game that didn't look great (save for a few penalties here and there). The defense kept the Eagles to only 9 rushing attempts and a grand total of 129 yards. Philadelphia has the league's top offense and Dallas held them to fewer than a buck thirty and no offensive touchdowns. Drew Bledsoe threw for 3 TDs and no INTs and it is becoming hard to call him anything other than the Comeback Kid. Who would have thought that one of the top QBs in football this year would be a guy in his 13th season who had slipped into the "Where Are They Now?" club over the last few seasons? The blocking did their job, as he wasn't sacked despite the fact that Dallas had the ball for more than 40 minutes of the game and Dallas' two impressive tailbacks Julius Jones (who suffered a minor injury and left the game) and Tyson Thompson combined for almost 150 yards. Finally, the special teams kept Dallas in hot field position all game and kept Philly's back against the wall for the less than 20 minutes they managed to possess the ball. What does this mean? It should mean a huge boost in Dallas' confidence. If they can do that to Philly, then they should be able to do it every week. The only teams as tough as the Eagles left on the schedule are, well, Philadelphia again on Monday night (that'll get some ratings) Nov. 14 and maybe Carolina on Christmas Eve. If the Dallas team that played yesterday shows up every week, we'll be looking at a division championship. Let me just say this, as a lifelong diehard Cowboys fan Sunday made me feel like I did as a kid watching Aikman, Irvin, Smith, Haley, Lett, Novacek and the rest of them win almost every weekend. To be cliche, there is really only one thing to say in this situation: How 'bout them Cowboys? Posted by: Andrew Dobbs at October 10, 2005 05:33 PMI love it, I make a post saying the writers are busy, and what happens, writers post comments on the post. :) Thanks guys. Posted by: Karl-T at October 10, 2005 07:17 PMChris Burke is from my hometown but I am still rooting for St. Louis. Good luck on midterms. Posted by: Daniel at October 10, 2005 07:24 PMhow about that columbus day? Posted by: bob at October 10, 2005 07:26 PMWe're too busy for any kind of constructive thought...we can ramble on about sports pretty much on cue. :) Posted by: Phillip Martin at October 11, 2005 09:26 AMWhen the right wing started their attack on the GLBT community in Washington with the threat of a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriages, Rick Santorum was one of the most out spoken cheerleaders for the measure. Now facing reelection Santorum is facing some tough competition to keep his seat as the #3 top republican in Washington. Indeed according to the Reuters news Bob Casey Jr. in this period has raised more than 300k more then Santorum. In this period Casey has raised more then $2 Million Dollars while Santorum has raised around $1.7 million. Santorum’s campaign blames the short comings on cancelled fundraiser events due to hurricane Katrina. It does raise the question if even mother nature wants Santorum out of Washington. It should also be mention that Casey, who is the current state Treasurer, is the son of the popular late governor and thus is expected to make this race one of the most competitive of the year. While Santorum does has more cash money with $6.6 Million and Casey has around $3 million, we shouldn’t feel discouraged because according a recent poll done by Connecticut-based Quinnipiac University Santorum is lagging 18 points behind Casey.
