Miers Withdraws Nomination
By Phillip Martin
From CNN:
President Bush on Thursday accepted the withdrawal of Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers, according to a statement from the White House.
In her letter to the president, Miers said she was "concerned that the confirmation process presents a burden for the White House and its staff and it is not in the best interest of the country."
The White House said Miers had to withdraw over concerns that senators wanted documents of privileged discussions between the president and his top lawyer.
"It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House -- disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel," Bush said.
It seems this nomination didn't work because the Senate simply wouldn't take President Bush's word that Harriet Miers was well qualified. I guess President Bush and Harriet Miers were the last two people to realize that.

They apparently they thought the "trust me" line was going to work. Obviously, this is the Supreme Court, and it doesn't work like that.

Sad, and she was kinda starting to grow on me, cronyism and all set aside.
I've been watching CNN at work, and they just said that throughout history, 80% of Supreme Court nominees have been confirmed. Bush, to steal a baseball metaphor, couldn't even get the bat off his shoulder.
Also, Bay Buchannan, a conservative pundit, just made a good point: the Democrats have lots of things going well for them right now (this failed nomination, the scandals, all the cronyism), but what they don't need is to get mean-spirited and do something that would re-energize the conservative base.
Now who is Mr. Coo Coo Bananas going to be forced to "nominate"? The American Taliban have spoken and have unwittingly made their "conservative" hero look like a Baboon's ass. WTF? Delay, Abramoff, Rove, Libby, Dr. Evil Dick Cheney himself, we gotta slow down and catch our breath here, the whole right just exploded like a corked bat. Pricelss.
"Most judges have been on the bench too long and lack grounding in reality and common sense."
Our own Senator Cornyn. The example he used? The length of time it took to rule on the Ten Commandments case. He said that anyone who had any sort of common sense would have easily ruled on that decision.
(Taking a breath, holding back on the swearing).
The Supreme Court is about the law, not public opinion.
Jeez! And now, KBH was just on the floor of the Senate, saying how Miers would have been valuable because she would have been able to guide legislators and clients about the laws. (I thought everyone was against legislating from the bench!)
The wheels are so far off the wagon...
"The wheels are so far off the wagon..."
And it appears the wagon is coming apart.
When the train jumps the tracks, it is then a wagon. When the wheels come off the wagon, what you have left is a sled. And a sled only works in one direction. The momentum or speed of the sled is directly related to the height of the hill. At the end, you're out on your a**.
Well this withdrawal of nomination actually makes Miers one of the smartest people in the White House. Give the woman a promotion!
If the Republican Party has become a sled, then it is fast becoming a downhill racer.
