October 05, 2005If You Want Change, Vote for ItBy Karl-Thomas MusselmanThe following is a guest column by Donna Howard, candidate for the Democratic nomination in HD 48 in West Austin. This is the first in a series of posts on behalf of active candidates. -KT I want to thank BOR for this opportunity to speak directly to you. My name is Donna Howard, and I'm running for HD 48. I was not seeking this job, but, after being asked by a number of people in my district to consider the race, I decided not only that I wanted to run but also that I could bring a wealth of real-life experiences to this effort. We are facing many critical issues in our community, and I want to be a part of the solution. The stakes are high. How will we save our public schools, safeguard our children's heath, protect our pocketbooks, roll back soaring college tuition rates, strengthen our neighborhoods, and build a future that reflects our mainstream values? With a state representative who is ready to lead, that's how. The incumbent has failed over and over again to demonstrate leadership, and our district and state have suffered.
I grew up in Austin and raised my family here in Austin-area public schools. I have taught at UT, my alma mater, and worked as a critical care nurse. I have worked in the community, served on the Eanes school board, and devoted my life to improving my neighbors' public education and public health. I don't need a party boss to tell me what to do. Now, more than ever, we need to put our community first and partisan politics last. And that's why I'm running for the Texas House -- to give the people of HD 48 a representative at the State Capitol who will work for them, for a change. If you agree that it's time for a change, join me in working for it. I encourage you to volunteer with my campaign for independent leadership that reflects our mainstream values. We need your energy, your best ideas, and your most generous contributions. Please go to http://www.votedonna.com to see more about my positive agenda for HD 48. You will learn about my life experience, career, and volunteer work with the Texas Education Crisis Coalition, the Texas Freedom Network, and Common Cause. And I hope you will agree that this campaign is uniquely positioned to help guide us toward a future of progress and prosperity based on healthy children learning in safe classrooms from well-paid, qualified teachers. And most of all, if you want change, vote for it. Because what we need is what we do not have under our current leadership -- a united effort that crosses party lines and ideologies and demands responsible support for public schools from all sectors of our community. If we get that right, everything else will follow. If we keep getting it wrong, not much else will matter. -Donna Posted by Karl-Thomas Musselman at October 5, 2005 08:07 AM | TrackBackComments
What a great column! Thanks for posting these words from an obviously qualified woman willing to take on the failed leadership and offer an alternative. It is nice to have a grownup in this race... and a thoughtful one at that! Posted by: g at October 5, 2005 08:31 AMBravo!!!! Posted by: Totally D at October 5, 2005 08:41 AMIf this lady can survive the Todd Baxter slime machine, she will make a great legislator. Her message is eloquent and inspiring and stands in stark contrast to Baxter and his self centered-Delay driven partisanship. Posted by: Stuart at October 5, 2005 09:22 AMMs. Howard sounds like she'd make a great legislator. Posted by: nadia at October 5, 2005 10:42 AMSince 2002, we have been represented at the state capitol by an arrogant little boy. The last thing we need is more of the same, from either major party. The prospect of Donna Howard representing us makes me proud and fills me with hope. Posted by: glenda at October 5, 2005 12:07 PMDonna Howard sounds impressive, but will she truly maintain independence in the face of a liberal Democratic Caucus that will place pressure to tow a liberal party line? There are strong Republican forces in District 48. To win this contest Ms. Howard should be a moderate. Based on the issues her campaign is discussing and the positions Ms. Howard is taking, I believe she will do a fine job as State Representative. One more thing…I don’t want to vote for millionaires and I don't care if they are Ds. Ms. Howard, are you a millionaire? We will find out sooner or later… usual anonymous donaphiles: wow she is so eloquent, victory is assured!!11! Note to Zack: You sound like you are either a Todd Baxter supporter or an Andy Brown supporter. Trouble is, there doesn't seem to be much difference either way. Why don't you dial back the bravado a bit and give whichever young guy you are supporting a chance to win some points. Posted by: glenda at October 5, 2005 06:47 PMdonaphile, let me show you how to call a spade a spade whenever there is a 48 story, you have like 3 anonymous posts shortly after because if that is the extent of her campaign i take comfort knowing that rider and brown's people spend their time actually working the district The posts do look fake. Is there anyway to make sure that people are real on this thing? Has Donna Howard done anything yet? It seems like she is losing by way of inactivity. I hope to see more than letters followed by fake letters from supporters in the future from the Howard camp. So far this is less than impressive. What happened to the days of hard working Doggett Democrats? I have heard Andy Brown has blockwalked over 1000 houses. Pretty freakin ridiculous. That is the Doggett way. Less talk and more action. Posted by: Drew Ramos at October 5, 2005 09:50 PMShe came to the UDems meeting tonight (though only caught the tail end of it since it was the Torchlight parade). So she is getting out and about to that degree. Posted by: Karl-T at October 5, 2005 11:49 PMHey, Todd. Stop posting on Democratic blogs. Repuglican wing nuts would welcome your angry conspiracy theories on their blogs. Posted by: glenda at October 6, 2005 12:09 PMPost a comment
