October 20, 2005Have You Hugged A Self-Identified ModerateToday?By Jim DallasPaul Waldman argues that the American people aren't conservative, and that "[t]he Democrats' 'liberal' problem isn't about issues, it's about identity." In addition to being self-flattering, the Waldman theory also happens to explain a few phenomena evident in polling that the simplistic "21-34-45" theory does not. At any rate, I have one quibble; Waldman's salve is to start attacking conservatism. That's great... but... I'd argue that the current identity problem exists not just because the term "liberal" has low valence but because "conservative" has high valence. That is, after all, Waldman's rationale. The sticky point is this: how do you attack conservatism without making conservatives think that you are making a judgment on them personally? And indeed, this may be part of our problem. If I had a dime for every GOPer who complained about the "preachy moralism" of the "Left," I'd be a rich man. Accordingly, I would argue a more effective strategy would be to explain in rational terms, "this is what liberalism can do for you and your family." And no, not in the stale, technocratic "teh pR3SKRIPSHUN DRUGGS!!!11!!!1!one" way either. Incidentally, Jason Stanford said basically the same thing the other day:

There is that Chris Bell name being invoked again. He's right. Bell doesnt offer store brand soda. He offers New Coke. New formula and tastes like crap. Posted by: John at October 20, 2005 02:09 PMJason is right. We have been offering store-brand cola for years now. And the middle isn't buying it. We need to put some lime in that Coke. Posted by: Rob at October 20, 2005 02:46 PMIf Chris Bell is now being "marketed" you have to wonder when the "fire sale" will be held. And as for Alison Bell's speech to Hadassah last Sunday, a number of people noticed she only mentioned the occupation of the husband of one of the friends who came and brought dinner every night. Her friend Andrea. Who she wanted everyone to know was the mayor's wife. Which some felt was a reflection of the speech being just another "marketing tool" for his run for governor more than a speech about her cancer survival. And not a very effective tool at that. Most then wondered why her friend Andrea's husband had not endorsed him. Good question considering some believe the mayor might not have become the mayor if Chris Bell hadn't "saved" us all from the evil Sylvester Turner who supposedly, allegedly, possibly, was conspiring to put another Bill White on the ballot. Crap indeed. Posted by: Baby Snooks at October 20, 2005 02:48 PMThe only coke i know for sure is the the stuff that right wing dictator george w and his buddies like perry are snorting. We need to all stand up and get behind Bell. He is decent, hardworking, and honest and that is new for Texas politics -- refreshing too! Posted by: allan lawrence at October 20, 2005 02:49 PMAll carbonated metaphors aside, I think Stanford was saying a bit more than John's giving credit for. Bell's campaign is fresh because he actually offers an affirmative world view for Democrats. Something that many Dems let slip away due to defensive posturing, left wing tribalism and right wing backlash. Posted by: LD at October 20, 2005 02:51 PMwho are you karl rove or lee atwater? despicable hateful comment ... attacking a cancer survivor? you're a true patriot! Posted by: pink lady at October 20, 2005 02:58 PMIf anyone wants to take on Alison after she's kicked chemo's ass, they'd better bring something better than a crappy little nom de dumbass. If you want to read this speech that Baby Snooks is anonymously (read, with maximum cowardice) criticizing, feel free to read it yourself at: http://www.chrisbell.com/insights/10232005_Alison. And if you want to criticize Alison for getting invovled in promoting stem cell research into finding a cure for the disease that almost killed her and another disease that killed Chris's mother, well, then go right ahead. But if you think that a breast cancer (and chemo) survivor has the right to speak out on issues, then you might want to tell Baby Snooks to rejoin the human race for a moment. Criticize me all you want. Even behind the cover of your cowardly little screen name. And anyone on the ballot is used to slings, arrows and slander. But if you mess with Alison, you're picking a fight that you won't win. Posted by: Jason Stanford at October 20, 2005 02:58 PMI think she has every right to speak out on cancer survival and on the need for expanded stem cell research. I applaud her for doing so. But I don't think she has the right to use that podium to interject implied endorsement of her husband as a political candidate by someone who in fact hasn't endorsed him. And when she does so, she becomes fair game. And I'm not really anonymous. As one of the staff of BOR discovered when he pulled my email and emailed me. Posted by: Baby Snooks at October 20, 2005 03:21 PMSnooks, you should lay off Chris' wife! She has earned the right to say whatever the hell she wants at whatever forum she desires to say it. Again, a political wife is a political wife. If she doesn't like the heat, get out of the kitchen. I suspect she does just fine in the heat. Is probably used to it more than he is. Posted by: Baby Snooks at October 20, 2005 03:34 PMDamnit Baby Snooks... You know, you say things that have merit, and are legitimate, and you for a while everyone is OK and listens and puts up with the 1,000 word posts...and then you do this. What's the point in attacking Alison? You rant and rave about the lack of morality in politics, then you attack someone on a bullshit issue. Claiming that someone is "fair game" hardly justifies asinine comments. I know everyone takes cheap shots at candidates, but (in my case) I try to keep it to attacking policy issues and things of substance. You can't whine about the problem if you're not willing to be part of the solution. Posted by: Phillip Martin at October 20, 2005 03:50 PMGood luck with this, but I'm thinking that it would be best to stop the name calling internally before you start working to bring in the moderates and marginal conservatives. Sure would be nice, Texas needs a resurgent Democratic party worse than it needs border control right now, if for no other reason then to make the Repubs work for it a little. Maybe Bell's the answer, maybe not, but he's gonna have to work a hell of a lot harder than he is now to get his name out there. Right now he's got the Internet Left, and not much else. Not hopeless by any means, since Bill White started out in the same boat himself. Look for White to withold his Bell endorsement until there's no political advantage to be gained. Bill White is the next "Golden Child" for the Dems, all he needs is one more "high voter volume" election to set the table. S. Posted by: Sedosi Alhambra at October 20, 2005 03:51 PMIf she wants to give a speech about cancer survival and the need for expanded stem cell research, more power to her. If she wants to give a speech about her husband running for governor, more power to her. But don't interject the latter into the former and expect people not to notice what you're doing. Again, fair game. Posted by: Baby Snooks at October 20, 2005 03:58 PMCandidate's spouses are not fair game. Well, except for Hillary's. Posted by: Jason Stanford at October 20, 2005 04:12 PMLooks like another one of those "We Democrats just need to find a better way to present our message." ideas. Hmmm...Democratic message: more taxes, ban (ultimately) all guns, put a stop to school prayer and strangle businesses to the point of having to close shop or leave the country. How much more sugarcoating of their message do the Democrats think they need to do to get themselves elected again? Posted by: Trey at October 20, 2005 04:25 PMPost a comment
