Molly Beth Malcolm Endorses Chris Bell for Governor
By Damon McCullar
From Texas Weekly:
Molly Beth Malcolm, the former chairwoman of the Texas Democratic Party (and so far the only female to hold that job) endorsed Chris Bell's run for governor, lauding the former congressman from Houston for his official ethics complaints about U.S. Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land. She fired a shot of sorts at members of her party who've moved to the middle as the state has become more Republican, suggesting that's not the way to win: "Chris is not now and never will be Republican-lite. He will not hide behind closed doors to avoid espousing democratic values."

Henry Cisneros: "I think John Sharp is the person that ought to run for governor. That's my opinion. He's an excellent public servant — he proved that when he was controller. He knows Texas backward and forward, and he's in the centrist model that the Democratic Party ought to have as its spokesman."

That would be great if John Sharp was running. I know the weekend is still young and there is a rumor out there that Mr. Sharp will declare this weekend, but I'm skeptical. He's cancelled two appearances, one being the Rural Democrats Summit last weekend. I just don't see how a guy that is canceling events left and right, had his treasurer declare no more filings for the year back in January, and has had rumor after rumor that he's announcing or running end up being retracted when it didn't come to fruition. I just don't see it in the tea leaves.
The announcement was publicly made at the Rural Ds that Sharp's daughter was having surgery, the reason he wasn't there. That not good enough for you? There have been no other appearances planned or cancelled, "left and right" or in any other direction. As for "rumor after rumor... being retracted"... who started the rumors and who retracted them? Not Sharp. Why should he be held accountable for your lousy information?
d makes good points. I would only add that next year will be all about the individual candidates. The TDP is irrelevent at best and an albatross at worst, the TTLA has a proven record of failure and is supporting Carole Strayhorn, anyway), and every Demo candidate needs to stand on his or her own. Regarding Sharp, the deadline for candidates to file is January 2, 2006. You won't need rumors then -- he will be in the race or not in the race.
If Sharp (or anyone credible) does run, his first ad should be:
"Hi, I'm John Sharp, and I am NOT endorsed by Molly Beth Malcolm. My opponent IS endorsed by Molly Beth Malcolm.
Vote for me, John Sharp, the guy not support by Molly Beth Malcolm."
fade to black
At which point and time, 98% of those who vote in a Democratic Party would look to their husband/wife/partner/friend/brother/sister/mother/father etc, scratch their head and ask... "Who the hell is Molly Beth Malcolm?"
Then guys like me can pontificate about how horrible an ad that was.
