Left/Right Oppose Amendment #2
By Karl-Thomas Musselman
The Log Cabin Republicans of Texas will work to defeat Prop 2.
"Individual liberty and freedom from governmental interference are the basic beliefs that founded the GOP. We are proud to continue this tradition by standing up against the politics of hate and fear that only lead to unwarranted government intrusion and loss of freedom."
The AFL-CIO will work to defeat Prop 2.
Sheppard said that the broad language of the proposal, which would also deny the creation or recognition of civil unions, puts workers in jeopardy of losing their health care benefits. Both Travis Co. and the city of Dallas, as well as dozens of private companies in Texas, extend employee benefits to domestic partners.
"Passage of Proposition 2 would, at the very least, place political pressure, and maybe legal pressure, on private companies ... to withdraw those benefits," Sheppard said. "In an age when companies are looking for an excuse to cut health care costs, Proposition 2 provides too tempting a target of opportunity." More than two-thirds of the federation's executive board voted to reject the proposition.

I am always heartened by the periodic emergence of the Log Cabin Republicans, it reminds me that anything is possible and that the human mind has limitless cognitive dissonance possibilities.
The big point that needs to be made to Texans in regards to Prop 2 is this--if it fails, gay marriage is STILL ILLEGAL in Texas. Gay marriage is illegal under DOMA from the 78th legislature. If this passes, it won't be any more illegal. If it fails, it won't be any more legal. This isn't about gay marriage, it is about the priorities of the legislature.
There is only one law against capital murder, aggravated rape, beating your wife or burning down a church. Why do we need two against gay marriage? Because they aren't doing this to "protect marriage", they are doing it to keep you from paying attention to the fact that your property taxes are still high, your schools still suck, your kids are still uninsured and your land is still under assault from the Trans-Texas Corridor. They think Texans are stupid enough to vote for a unnecessary, meaningless bit of silliness so they'll think that a bunch of corrput, visionless, meanspirited morons in Austin actually did something this session.
That is why No Nonsense in November is such a great idea for a campaign. This proposition is a bunch of nonsense, and even if you oppose gay marriage, you should vote NO just to send a message.
