Kinky Friedman did better than someone else. And someone else. And everyone else. Interesting that with its large Hispanic population, Alvarado was not listed on the poll. Posted by: Baby Snooks at September 20, 2005 10:31 AMHaving worked on campaigns before, I can tell you that these kinds of polls never work because campaigns spam them. A kinky aide has admitted to me that he uses his campaign software to target people to send comments to blogs (including this one). The large number of someone else is interesting, though. Posted by: matth at September 20, 2005 10:40 AMThis poll is a good example of the ignorance related to politics. Why does the media assume that the voters will vote for politicians with ties to deep pockets? Who is someone else? Why not list all the names of the candidates in the race? It is obvious that the sponser also has some say in how the poll is layed out. SA is a huge Hispanic community, and the only Hispanic candidate is thrown in the someone else category. I will not purchase another express and news paper. Posted by: IAM at September 20, 2005 10:58 AM"The large number of someone else is interesting, though." I think it might be indicative of people just being fed up with it all. Which in turn makes Kinky Friedman attractive to them. Since he is not part of it all. Polls in general can be misleading depending on how the "cross sampling" is selected but what I found interesting about this one was the "someone else" and the percentage it garnered. Spammers would be targeting someone specific. Given the large Hispanic population and the exclusion of Alvarado, the "someone else" may be Alvarado. Posted by: Baby Snooks at September 20, 2005 11:05 AMYeah sure, snooks, because I'm sure there are 5 people in San Antonio who have ever heard of Alvarado. Are you guys seriously at the point where you're trying to read tea leaves off of an internet poll? To borrow a phrase IAM, this post is a good example of the ignorance related to the Kinky-philes. Posted by: You've got to be kidding at September 20, 2005 12:16 PMIn case anyone still cares, Bell is up to 17.6%, bringing him much closer to Perry and Strayhorn, both of whom are now at about 19%. Friedman is still at 30%. Obviously, the Perry and Strayhorn camps are doing a lousy job turning out their supporters for this highly scientific endeavor. Posted by: Charles Kuffner at September 20, 2005 12:52 PMActually Chris Bell is now at 24%. Jason must have gotten very busy after checking BOR this morning. Scientifically speaking, of course. *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* *click* How many times can you click a mouse in a minute? Now there's a poll to take! Posted by: Baby Snooks at September 20, 2005 01:16 PMIf you have to hit backspace everytime, you can do it on your own around 19-20 times per minute if you're on a high speed connection. Using automater for Mac you can get that number higher. Posted by: matth at September 20, 2005 01:20 PM"I think it might be indicative of people just being fed up with it all. Which in turn makes Kinky Friedman attractive to them." So a few hours ago this useless internet poll was apparently a stirring and profound statement of anti-establishment zeitgeist, but since Chris Bell is now doing well then it reverts to being a useless internet poll? Tsk tsk snooks, it's starting to look like you're grasping at straws. Posted by: You've got to be kidding at September 20, 2005 01:51 PM"So a few hours ago this useless internet poll was apparently a stirring and profound statement of anti-establishment zeitgeist, but since Chris Bell is now doing well then it reverts to being a useless internet poll?" Scroll up through the posts. Learn to read: "Polls in general can be misleading depending on how the "cross sampling" is selected..." The scroll down: "If you have to hit backspace everytime, you can do it on your own around 19-20 times per minute if you're on a high speed connection. Using automater for Mac you can get that number higher." Maybe it's a sudden surge of individual Bell supporters hitting the internet. Or someone wanting it to appear that they are?
Maybe I'm just an idiot (and that could very well be the case), but I voted once from home and from work- hehe- for Bell and after both times I couldn't vote again. Just got the results. Who knows, but odds are Friedman supporters hit it up early- most likely via Friedman campaign urging- and Bell supporters are hitting it up now- most likely via Bell campaign urging. If I had a dollar for every online poll I tried to 'win' for my candidates/cause/team, I'd be a very rich man. Posted by: Cincinnatus at September 20, 2005 02:39 PMI think they posted this after it hit BOR or another blog. I don't think the subsequent percentages reflect a surge of Kinky Friedman supporters "stacking the deck." I don't think you're an idiot. I do think most polls are idiotic. Most are manipulated by the pollsters. In any case, they are just numbers. The only numbers that mean anything with regard to polls are the numbers cast at the polls when people actually vote. Although of course as we have all learned, some would say those are now manipulated as well. Posted by: Baby Snooks at September 20, 2005 03:11 PM Kinky blog posted the SA poll at 9:38 am. Doesn't change the fact that no one will address, and that's the fact that Jennifer Gale appears nowhere on this poll. I'm going to assume she's making up a significant portion of the "somebody else" vote. Posted by: Timestamp at September 20, 2005 04:35 PMI guess a poll that doesn't include all of the candidates isn't much of a poll. Posted by: Baby Snooks at September 20, 2005 05:24 PMYou are right that I posted about the poll after the kinky blog does. I have it as well as the Bell blog on RSS feed. It's not my problem it showed up on one and not the other. So what's your point? Posted by: Karl-T at September 20, 2005 06:33 PMHardigree, Maybe bell could afford software like that if he didnt spend it all on worthless consultants that have gotten him nowhere. Posted by: JG at September 20, 2005 06:54 PMI hope no one who posted comments here ever, ever complains about gossip and worthless polls. Of all the news from the last few days, and all the posts on BOR, that this and the John Sharp poll got the most comments shows something quite simply: Even the bloggers and blogger-lites don't care about issues. Everyone is absorbed in overanalyzing campaigns. If this stupid, meaningingless poll even had half of an effect on anything, I'd give all my money to the Republican party. But it doesn't. Issues matter. Message matters. Stop walking through the gutter when there's work to be done out on the streets. Posted by: What a Waste at September 20, 2005 09:37 PMMy point had nothing to do with your point. I'm not sure what your point is. Not sure I had a point either or if there really was a point to the poll to begin with except that they are easily manipulated. Although again there were some interesting things about this one. Particularly the early results before everyone discovered it and no doubt started email alerts to have everyone "stack the deck." I only pointed out that I thought they posted it after you did. Apparently you posted it after they did. Not sure it mattered either way. "Everyone is absorbed in overanalyzing campaigns." Not everyone. Only the political consultants and the pundits. The rest of us are going by sheer gut instinct. And lots of gossip. Posted by: Baby Snooks at September 20, 2005 10:01 PMPoll closed with 2216 votes: 32.8% Kinky Friedman Post a comment
