East Texas Church Slams "The Big Easy"

By Damon McCullar

It only took a week and a half, much longer than I expected, for a conservative Christian ideologue to say that it's New Orleans' own fault that it was destroyed. In the esteemed tradition of Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson circa 9/11/2001, Pastor Wiley Bennett has proclaimed New Orleans as the new "Sodom and Gomorrah". The pastor from Tyler, Texas had this to say when confronted about the sign by a New Orleans evacuee:

"The point of the sign is New Orleans, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and New York City are some of the most wicked cities in America."

and then went on to say:

"Anybody that's ever visited New Orleans, the very name its self - Big Easy - denotes that it's easy to find sin there. The purpose of the sign is to wake American up to the fact that America is going away from God. New York City's 9/11 was a call of judgment and New Orlean's horrible incident was judgment on a wicked city."

KLTV in Tyler has the full story.

If so, then you have to wonder why Florida keeps getting hit by hurricanes. Maybe a little hanky panky at the polls in 2000?

What total BS. The idea that hurricanes, or any other natural disaster, are caused by the wrath of a merciless supreme being belongs in the garbage bins with other flat-earth theories. From Daily Kos posted by Maryscott OConnor:

“Pat Robertson on Sunday said that Hurricane Katrina was God's way of expressing its anger at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for its selection of Ellen Degeneres to host this year's Emmy Awards. "By choosing an avowed lesbian for this national event, these Hollywood elites have clearly invited God's wrath," Robertson said on "The 700 Club" on Sunday. "Is it any surprise that the Almighty chose to strike at Miss Degeneres' hometown?"

It’s sick, sick, sick and NOT Christian to think that the morals of any person or peoples caused this destruction.

Someone accused Pat Robertson of being a Christian? I thought he was a sleazy televangelist.

My question is what did the hundreds of thousands of people who were killed by the indian ocean tsunami do to piss god off. They must have had some really kinky stuff going over there. Pat Robertson is senile. I just cant wait to hear what comes out of his mouth next. He is always good for a deep, hardy belly laugh. Seriously, that guy is a comedy goldmine.
