A Mighty Wind

By Karl-Thomas Musselman

May a suggest that if you havn't thought about it yet, you leave?

Also, Texas is filling up fast. 20,000 rooms in Dallas booked overnight. 500 requests for rooms for a 40 room motel in Llano in one day. The largest hotels in Midland and Odessa, full. I just got off the phone with Councilman Musselman in Fredericksburg and everything is booked up down to the last B&B.

Austinites, charge your cell phones in advance, and be on the lookout for ACL cancelations of some sort. The Statesman has a checklist that locals may want to think about. When that eye is 2-3 counties east of us, it's still expected to be a Category 1.

BOR will be here, hopefully Matt will be able to report as long as he can (stay safe out there!), keep an eye on Kuff as well if you are closer to the Houston area.

Houston Flood Map here which lists Cat 5 storm surge zones.

Quite a few gas stations have run out of gas. The freeways are bumper to bumper. It is a mess. It will probably be a repeat of New Orleans.

For those with a full tank and somewhere to go, the advice is try to leave between 3 and 6 am when they expect the traffic will have dissipated. For others, if indeed it hits Freeport, try to find a shelter nearby where you can at least ride out the storm. There is expectation according to some that the western part of Harris County will experience 120 mph winds. With higher gusts. It is a far worse storm than Katrina was. If you flooded during Allison, do not plan stay in your home. Find someplace safe. The flooding potentially could be worse because there will be no drainage at the point the storm surge hits Galveston Bay and this will last 13-15 hours. Possibly longer.

I was called earlier today about how you find a shelter. Good question. If anyone knows of a source of shelter lists, please post so the rest of us can relate that to other people.

The city apparently has no shelters set up despite everyone claiming we were prepared. Obviously we were not and are not.
