Live 8: They Don't Want Your Money, They Want YOU!
By Marcus Ceniceros
The Live 8 concerts have been on MTV and VH1 all day. There is some great music by artists like Sting, Madonna, Jay-Z, Lincoln Park, and tons more.
But besides the music, there is an important mission: end poverty in Africa. Every day, 30,000 kids die due to poverty.
Help send a message to President Bush and the rest of the G8 leaders to make a commitment to end poverty by doubling aid, droping the debt, and making trade laws fair.

The idea and purpose was good (as well as the music!) though I am skeptical it will do any good. With corrupt African dictators and corporations, the chances the forgivness of debt will filter down to those that need it are slim.
A better idea is a comprehensive plan with debt forgiveness as only one of many items. Though this is certainly a good start and does make people at least think of the poverty of others.
Even as far as awareness goes, I don't think it did much, judging on the 2 minutes I saw on TV. It actually disgusted me that while celebs were talking about the seriousness of the issue and the baffling statistics, the croud was cheering, yelling things like "I love you Will," etc. When the video of celebs counting off 3 seconds came up, the croud was simply going nuts when the more popular ones appeared. Seems to me that it was just a free concert to most...
to a large extent, debts owed by the developing world were forgiven about a month ago by President Bush.
by this i mean to say that Bush and Blair agreed in June to forgive the debt via the G8. it hasn't been put into effect yet--though it undoubtedly will this week.
