Staples to Announce for Ag Commissioner

By Karl-Thomas Musselman

Quroum Report now reports that after Combs announcement this morning, Senator Staples is going to run for her old spot as the Ag Commissioner. Though that will open up a Senate seat (which seem not to change often in Texas unless they do become open, it's 63% RPI and Staples didn't have even a token challenger out there in East Texas the last go round. Not partiucularly sure who might be stepping up on either side for that seat, but it would be nice to see someone like Charlie Stenholm run for the Dems for Ag Commissioner.

Obviously we're unsure who might look to run for this senate seat on the Dem side. Any ideas who might run on the Republican side? Roy Blake, Jr. perhaps filling his dad's old spot? Does Ruben Hope actually live in the district? I know Conroe is in the district, but not sure he lives in that part of it. Chuck Hopson and Jim McReynolds are the first 2 Dems to pop to mind in this area.

I expressed the same desire for Stenholm to throw his hat into this race on my Texas Politics blog yesterday. What can we do to recruit him.

Here's Charlie Stenholm's email address. Write and encourage him to run for Ag Commissioner.

Hope does live in that district. I used to work in his office a few years back - he is my hometown rep, that is the only reason. There has not been much talk about him doing it yet. The district has grown alot since Staples has represented it. It seems to be growing even more Republican from what I have seen. Many older couples are moving up to the Montgomery County area around Lake Conroe who seem to pretty much align themselves with the right. On the flip side, the property taxes, due to the cost of land in the area, has soared and many people are not happy about that. I would like to see a Democrat run in this area. I would put my chips on the Republicans holding onto this Senate seat however.

On second thought, it might just be possible. My former boss, Rep. John Mabry (D-Waco) won in a 67& republican district. All is possible. If Hope runs for Senate and the Republicans put up a typical old man to run, a young moderate Democrat just might have a chance. Education is the key to this distrcit. About half the schools benefit from Robin Hood and about half loose. A Democrat would have to have some very good education ideas, which we usually tend to have.

Hope won't be running. See article above. Also potentially Barnes from Center, TX. SD-3 will stay as an R seat; the SD-3 population of Montgomery County overwhelms whatever D sentiments may still linger in yeller-dawg East Texas.

Plus, w/ the marriage amendment on the ballot in '06 (courtesy, Senator Staples), this would be a huge fight for a D. (cf. Montgomery County Demoractic Party Chair).

Blake could be the dark horse, at least as far as Montgomery County is concerned.

Marriage amendment won't be up in 2006, it will be up this year.

Hell, maybe I will just run aganist Hope. Can you see the headline. Former intern faces off aganist old boss. It would be nice to at least cause them to have to spend some money in the race.
