Smokin'
By Jim Dallas
I've not always had the highest opinion of CounterPunch, since they're a tad on the nutty side sometimes (then again, aren't we all?).
Still, I didn't expect they'd run a fairly good article reviewing restaraunts in Lockhart, the barbecue capital of Texas.
I've always wanted to stop in Lockhart on the way from Austin to Houston, but have always been deterred by time or lack of money.

Good article. In addition, Lockhart is where a lot of Christopher Guest's Waiting For Guffman was filmed. Interesting courthouse.
For my money, the best BBQ I've ever had was at Louie Moeller's in Taylor (30 miles NE of Austin, crossroads of Hwys 79 and 95).
Lockhart is actually an interesting little town. I went through on my way to Gruene, and a couple of other times. Lots of antique shops.
I thought Elgin was declared the BBQ capital of Texas.
One thing you gotta hand the Lone Star State: there is excellent BBQ almost everywhere. My favorite remains Angelo's in Ft. Worth, which also has the coldest beer even (especially) on the hottest days.
Kyle: Elgin is only the sausage capital of Texas.
Lockhart is well worth the drive, if you like barbecue. It's not too far away to do a round trip from Austin (about 45 minutes each direction).
For very interesting eating, Lockhart's Kreuz Market -- which is NOT actually a BBQ joint, but an old-style meat market with a dining area -- rocks my world. As long as you don't go in there expecting traditional BBQ, you'll be blown away.
For actual BBQ, there is nothing finer than a springtime drive through the bluebonnet-filled Hill Country that ends with (or at the very least includes) a visit to Cooper's in Llano.
On a visit two years ago, I went in wearing my Texas Observer T-shirt (in partial defiance of their Bush sticker on the door). A woman craned her neck to look at me as if she knew me, and I finally realized she was looking at my shirt. After a few seconds, I realized it was Molly Ivins. I'm sure she was glad to see another liberal outside of Austin.
SMOKING SHOULD BE ILLEGAl EVERYWHERE WHO WANS TO DIE FROM SOETHING LIKE THAT I PERSONALLY WOULD RATHER WANT TO DIE OF OLD AGE. THINK ABOUT IT I KNOW I WOULDN'T!
