Play Dirty, Pay Big

By Andrea Meyer

State District Judge Joe Hart has ruled that Texans for a Republican Majority must now pay up to the tune of $196,660 in damages to five Democrats who lost their races as a result of over a half-million dollars in illegal campaign money funneled to Republican opponents. The recipients include Ann Kitchen, who lost her race to Todd Baxter after both being redistricted and falling victim to the filthy politics practiced by the Republicans. Her award comes to over $87,000. Although we lost an intelligent, capable representative to an individual such as Baxter, who couldn't even campaign by himself, I'm glad that there is some justice that hits Republicans where it strikes at their hearts, aka their wallets.

Judge Hart just issued his ruling in the Tom DeLay-TRMPAC civil case, finding that DeLay and Craddick broke state campaign finance law. The lead plaintiff’s attorney, Cris Feldman, is having a press conference today (Wednesday) at the Travis County Courthouse. We need to get a good crowd down there to show support and in case some Republicans show up.

This is a big deal. The Republican line is that this scandal is a lot of smoke, but not fire. Today, the flames are high.

The courthouse is at 1000 Guadalupe.

About the Kitchen-Baxter race, I heard a rumor that the Baxter clan had a mole in the Kitchen campaign. Anyone else hear anything like this? I heard this about a month after the election, but just chalked it up to conspiracy theory. Always meant to ask, but never remembered till now.

Wish I could transport myself the 1,500 miles to the press conference on Guadalupe today. Bill Ceverha, a raving Republican/Bigot who while in the Texas Lege in the 1980's tried to pass a law that would have essentially made being a homosexual a felony, is finally starting to get his richly deserved commupance for all the legal crimes and misdemeanors he has commited over the years.

Sorry about this, but no rally. Repeat, the only thing you'll get for going to the courthouse today is sunstrike and a parking ticket.
