March 01, 2005Voting Ignite unAmerican? Please...By Karl-Thomas MusselmanThis is what I get for staying up late at night. Earlier on Connect's website was a flash video that called any vote for the rival Ignite campaign UnAmerican. In the case it is removed from the site (which it now has been), it's original source can still be found here for viewing. Transcript is below. Screenshots in the extended entry of key frames.
This is uncalled for. Through the interview process I was assured that the highest levels of the Connect campaign did not authorize any destruction of Ignite campaign materials. I would like to know how high up the chain approval for this video goes. As a Democrat who has had this charge personally leveled against me before, I take great offense to this action and believe it reflects poorly on the character of people I would otherwise have thought would be 'sensitive' to these issues. As I've already told KT, personally I think that it's just a bad joke. Most students will regard any hubbub about this to be another example of negative campaigning and it will just turn them off from SG even more. Posted by: chrisken at March 1, 2005 03:09 AMAnd as I have already told Chris, this was a really stupid move and for the liberals on this campus that can identify with these types of attacks, I would expect a higher level of debate from the campaigns. Joke or not, it's still shameful. Posted by: Karl-T at March 1, 2005 03:12 AMAnd as Ignite was quoted in today's Daily Texan, they see higher turnout as helping their ticket, which I tend to agree with, since they are slightly more reform in nature. If this is an effort at voter supression, (not that it will be effective now) that is also sad. Posted by: Karl-T at March 1, 2005 03:14 AMIf it's an effort at voter suppression then you're helping it by making a big deal about it. Plus, they already took it down. Posted by: chrisken at March 1, 2005 03:20 AMMy God KT...as a "journalist" did you even consider contacting someone from Connect about it? The video was made by a supporter, and as soon as Omar and Elizabeth saw the video they had it taken down. Your tacit accusation of "voter suppression" is inexcusable. As a democrat I respect mot all of what you report and write here on BOR, and I would respect you as a campus journalist if you would edit your post and comments to more accurately reflect the truth instead of ignorant presumptions. Posted by: JW Walthall at March 1, 2005 03:27 AMI'll take back the voter supression comment, I was a bit peturbed at the time and it really doesn't make much sense. But, I do not believe that everyday supporters of Connect have the ability to add just any old thing they like to the campaign website without the approval of their webmaster or someone from the inner circle of campaign leaders. For that reason I will edit this post but I will not take it down unless other some more in depth information becomes available. Plus, do you want me calling you at 3 am on a regular basis for press statments? I think having it online got the point across. I did e-mail the campaigns about it. Posted by: Karl-T at March 1, 2005 03:38 AMIn addition, I'm a blogger, a reporter of the Burnt Orange kind, but never did I say in my work here I was acting as a full fledged, non-biased "Journalist" (minus my endorsement work for the Texan, which was for the Texan and redistributed here). I do not feel the need to in every case act the part of the News Dept. and will do so when time permits or I see the need to. People don't come here for straight up news, it's the commentary and take on what's going on, along with some degree of original reporting like Byron will be posting later today. Posted by: Karl-T at March 1, 2005 03:43 AMbut, wouldn't it be unamerican? What about Colby's plan to sell secrets to Iran? Posted by: matth at March 1, 2005 09:25 AMIt was a bad joke. I doubt many voters are going to see that and decide that Ignite's proposal to extend time limits on treadmills is really a well contrived plan to use more energy, thus making us more dependant upon middle eastern regimes that want to see our downfall. Also, Matt-- Colby isn't the only one. In 1999, Jessica was seen having coffee with Zarquai in London. Posted by: Zach N at March 1, 2005 09:33 AMI'm just glad that President Bush's letter of endorsement for Brent Chaney never made it up on the web last year. Apparently Bush thought Brent was realted to Dick...yet another spelling gaff on his part. Posted by: JW Walthall at March 1, 2005 01:07 PMHey everyone. I just wanted to set the record straight about this unfortunate video. I agree with the opinions expressed by Karl-T in that the commentary on this video is inappropriate. The video was made by a supporter who e-mailed it last night to the person updating our site. Omar and Elizabeth were not aware of the content of the video. I actually heard Elizabeth say verbatim about an hour ago that as soon as she found out what was on the video, she was shocked. Also, in no way is the campaign endorsing the fact that voting for Ignite is un-American. That is just absurd. Omar, Elizabeth, and the rest of the candidates are intelligent enough to know that pointing the finger at another ticket and calling them un-American is not the way to win an election. Karl-T, I want to affirm the fact that destruction of Ignite campaign material has never been authorized. Let me assure you, negative campaigning and voter suppression is not what this ticket is about. In fact, our ticket is so concerned with voter turnout that a number of candidates spent the night at the UGL in order to check out as many laptops as possible for voting today. Again, I want to stress that this video is NOT what the ticket stands for. It is unfortunate that the video was on the website in the first place, and I am glad that it is gone. Anyway, I just wanted to clear that up. It was nice to see you today KT. Take care all. Thanks Jessica, I appreciate your comments and really hope that you do win a seat in the Assembly. I hope that whomever your webmaster is has a bit more sense in the future. It was great to see you again today and I was more than happy to cast my vote for you earlier today.
