Open Thread
By Byron LaMasters
I won't be posting until later in the day, but yall are welcome to use this as an open thread, since we haven't done one in awhile. Feel free to talk about the Oscars last night, or about BOR's mention in two daily newspapers today, the Dallas Morning News and the Daily Texan, or whatever else you'd like.

Why does the DMN refer to BOR as "Burnt Orange Report, a political Web diary for Texas..."?
Has AP style still not caught up with the modern world? Shouldn't the proper phrasing be: "Burnt Orange Report, a political Weblog for Texas..."?
This particular "thing" isn't worthy of a full post, so I'm glad for the open thread this morning.
Anyway, I just wanted to point out that, once again, a blog (this one) has broken Texas political news before a newspaper, before AP, before TV and before radio. (Van Os running for AG)
Now, when AP and all the rest of the "mainstream media" start following that story, which, surely they will....why won't they say, "the story was first broken on the political weblog Burnt Orange Report?" After all, you KNOW that TX political journalists are reading this & other blogs.
Although I know no one will because it would give credence to the world of blogs, they would if it was a regular newspaper. How many TIMES have I seen the phrases, "The New York Times first reported in its Sunday editions," or "The Washington Post discovered the irregularities in a special study," and bla bla bla.
DMN barely reports news. The odds a story will be broken by someone other than their paper are so high, that they would have to credit everyone but their own writers for every piece written.
so a Rabbi and a priest walk in to a bar...
I'm curious how well informed people think they are about the SEC race, if they know there is an SEC race, if anyone knows what the SEC president does. Our numbers show recognition increasing greatly but we're sort of waiting to see what kind of turnout we get off-ticket.
Doesn't the SEC president schedule Auburn-Georgia and Florida-Alabama on different weekends? :)
Just kidding. And remember, weblogs beat the media to stories because we don't have to worry about credibility, accountability, or the pesky three-source rule.
Vince... the Dallas Morning News did something similar in December when they didn't even mention Ryan Davis of Not Geniuses when the DMN did a follow-up story on the story that Ryan broke on Trinity Christian Academy expelling a senior for being gay. The credit they gave Davis?
"Others on the Web have published similar accounts of his story."
I'm not upset with the Dallas Morning News over the listing today -- although Vince, you are right - they should know better. When this site is credited by mainstream media my first choice would be for it to be cited as "BurntOrangeReport.com, a Texas political weblog" or something to that effect - that's exactly what the Daily Texan did today... kudos to them. Just saying "Burnt Orange Report" is ok for the web savvy viewer who thinks to google the title - and they'll come up with this site, but for your average reader, they'll read "Burnt Orange Report"... what the heck is that? It might be worth sending Gromer Jeffers an email on the topic - I'm not sure if a lot of mainstream reporters are willfully ignorant as to blogs, or if they are just unaware of the correct terminology. If it's the latter, they just need to be educated.... if it's the former, well then the blogging revolution will have to take them down.... AUURRGGHHHH!!!
David Van Os is a psycho. God willing there will be at least one other Democrat in that race.
