November 22, 2004Heflin Asks for a RecountBy Byron LaMastersThis is what I expected. Republican State Rep. Talmadge Heflin, who lost Hubert Vo by 32 votes has asked for a recount:
A recount is fine. But things could get pretty suspicious rather quickly. Here's what one person familiar with the situation said to me in an email:

These Republicans are despicable. They refuse to lose, and the will of the voters be damned. Tom Craddick and his cronies are running the most corrupt Texas House in modern history. Even the Sharpstown scandal pales by comparison because that was just about lining their pockets. This is about abuse of power that hurts people in their daily lives. Posted by: Kevin Scott at November 23, 2004 07:39 AMFor what it is worth, I have worked both with and against Andy Taylor. He is not Tom DeLay's favorite lawyer. Tom DeLay's favorite lawyer is JD Pauerstein, who is defending Jim Ellis and others involved in the redistricting probe. Posted by: Keith at November 23, 2004 09:03 AMSo when Gore wants a recount because "some legal votes weren't counted," that's courageous, but when Heflin wants the same thing, that's despicable? Riiight. Posted by: Drew at November 23, 2004 09:10 AMI'm all for letting Heflin have his recount, but I'll raise hell if he contests this election in the house. Posted by: Byron L at November 23, 2004 09:17 AMThese Republicans are unbelievable! Publicly, they throw Heflin under the bus, but they're just setting up for a contest. Watch. Everybody says they're not backin Heflin, but this way when they it bring it to the House floor they will look solemn and say they are compelled to call a new election. What do you bet they would never try this against a white candidate? Posted by: Ryan Stewart at November 23, 2004 09:45 AMHistorically, when a new election is called, the person who calls it (in this case, it will be Helin) is not only beaten, they are crushed. Drew, wanting a recount is not despicable. Recounts are a fact of life. I have no quarrel with Heflin asking for a recount--I just have an issue with the fact that it is already being set up so that no matter what the outcome is, Heflin will win, regardless of what the voters want--a little like Bush in Florida in 2000. THAT is despicable. Ryan, I agree with you 110%. Posted by: Andrea M. at November 23, 2004 01:35 PMI actually hope the House orders a new election. Vo will crush him and the electorate will see what thugs the Rethuglicans really are. Posted by: WhoMe? at November 24, 2004 12:00 AMPost a comment
