Another Failed Gay-baiting Campaign
By Byron LaMasters
This time with Jack Stick:
Stick, who got married as early voting was beginning, sent out a last-minute mailer with his wedding photos. Stick touted his opposition to same-sex marriage while citing Strama's endorsement by the Austin Lesbian/Gay Political Caucus.
Gay-baiting tactics may work in rural areas, but I think urban and suburban areas are rejecting it. I'm a board member of the ALGPC (as well as LGRL - Lesbian / Gay Rights Lobby of Texas). Our PAC donated a couple of thousand dollars to each of Strama, White, Hubener and Vo -- so while things could have been better, we've clearly made gains in electing more pro-GLBT state representatives.

His wedding photos on an anti-gay mailer? Does he have something to prove? ;) At any rate, if gay marriage threatens his own, he may want to seek marriage counseling before it's too late.
Semi-off-topic: Are the "Rick Perry is gay" rumors dead? I think this would be a great time for pressure to be put on the People Who Know the Truth. I'd do it, but I'm stuck way out here in Fucking Lubbock. :/
Also off topic- The Advocate's website is saying that 21%-23% of gays voted for Busy- about the same as the 2000 election.
Back on topic- I can't imagine any self respecting person would think someone using his wedding photos while also expressing his opposition to gay marriage in campaign mailers is anything BUT a sleazy move.
So all people living in rural areas are homophobes. Nice to see you are open-minded and shy away from generalizations. Hypocrite.
Elmer = Troll.
Back to the glue factory with ye!
don't count you chickens just yet. the heflin/vo race is not over.
Some other good news:
The new sheriff of Dallas is a Hispanic woman and is also openly gay. The country is not making strides to improve the rights of gays, but it is taking small steps in certain places. You only need to look at the demographics to see that your attitude about homosexuality is all about your age. The young generations have no problem with it. Things will get better, but it will take time. For now we can be happy that Stick is gone. I knew he was a crap-ass rep, I didn't know he was a homophobe as well. He really thought that would fly in Austin? What a dumbass.
Another off topic- since we are talking about gays. On his list of priorities in his second term in office, bush has listed a constiutional ammendment banning gay marriage. I hope all of the gays that voted for him are happy with themselves.
I saw an e-mail from Kelly White talking about the upcoming recount. Hopefully that will swing her way and oust one more liberty-depriving member of the local GOP House delegation.
Sad to say but gay-bashing won the country for Bush by turning out the bigoted in droves to vote against civil rights (and for Bush while they were at it).
It is truly remarkable that with terrorism, war, heralth care, lost jobs, economic insecurity, etc., the issue that ultimately tipped the election is a complete non-issue for 90% of Americans.
bigotted lable
It's 'bigoted label'.
Peter- they may have voted for the President, but do they support his stance on same sex marriage and civil unions?
Let's not be confused here, the main ammendment trying to pass in the Houses supported marriage and "any legal incidents" thereof should be between a man and a woman. Read- no marriage, no civil unions.
