April 01, 2004Perry to Call Special Session as Strayhorn Calls him a FailureBy Byron LaMastersAfter ignoring the public education crisis in Texas during the 2003 legislative session, and then spending the rest of the year on Tom DeLay's redistricting adventure, Governor Perry has finally found time to try and solve our crisis in public education in Texas. The Austin American Statesman reports:
It's about time. Rick Perry and the Republican leadership should have focused on this a year ago, but instead saw redistricting as a more important issue. It's not only Democrats who are unhappy, though. Republican Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn yesterday said that it's time for new leadership in Austin. The Houston Chronicle reports:
Texas is last or near last in children's health insurance and public education, and its getting worse because children are not a top priority of the Republican leadership. Some Republicans like Strayhorn understand this, and genuinely want to help children, but the core of the state GOP leadership (Perry, Dewhurst, Craddick, etc.) don't give one bit. I wonder how they will manage to take this already morbidly sorry issue and turn it into even more of a complete failure... ...I shudder to think. Credit card Republicans and their corporate quid pro quo and welfare for the wealthy need their asses kicked out of power here in Texas and in Washington D.C. Posted by: Patrick at April 1, 2004 01:40 PMI like Byron's comments, but I think he is unfair toward the Lieutenant Governor. David Dewhust fought againt the CHIP cuts (though probably not strongly enough) and instructed his then Finance Committee chairman to stand up to Perry, Craddick and Heflin. Governor Dewhurst gets failing marks for wasting his political capital on redistricting after building up a grand Senate infrastructure. But Bullock, Hobby, Barnes, Smith, etc. all had hiccups in the job. If there has to be a Republican in the job, then I say Dewhurst is the best on available. Posted by: notgonnatell at April 1, 2004 01:46 PMI'd agree that Dewhurst's actions over the past year and a half has been the least hideous. If I had to grade the three I'd probably give Perry and Craddick F's and I'd give Dewhurst a D. I was begining to like Dewhurst at about this time last year, but any good will I had with him was lost in the redistricting circus that ensued.
