April 30, 2004Kelly White Campaign KickoffBy Byron LaMastersI was going to post on the Kelly White Campaign kickoff, since I attended it last night, but a reader made my job easy by sending me his report:
Kelly White is running against Todd Baxter in a northwest Austin based State House seat. Both Kirk Watson and John Sharp won the district for Democrats in 2002. White has an impressive background, so check out her webpage and learn more about her. Posted by Byron LaMasters at April 30, 2004 12:44 PM | TrackBackComments
I loved hearing Kelly speak at our UDem meeting. She is an inspiration to everyone! Posted by: Andrea M. at April 30, 2004 01:03 PMMan, if I were a dem, I really wouldn't waste my time or money on this one. NW Austin is strongly republican, and Todd Baxter is popular there. Even if the dems make a strong effort here, they'll be lucky to get 38%. Posted by: TM at April 30, 2004 08:13 PMTM, To put it bluntly: Kelly White ain't no Ann Kitchen, the popular *incumbent* with a large following. Only rabid dems care about the old "special interests" dodge, a non-starter for most every dem from WJB to Gore. 38%. Posted by: TM at April 30, 2004 11:46 PMUhmm... the district was won by John Sharp and Kirk Watson: LT. GOVERNOR ATTORNEY GENERAL As with district 50 (Strama / Stick), 48 leans Republican, but has lots of independent swing voters that are willing to vote for a Democrat. Posted by: Byron L at April 30, 2004 11:52 PMWatson being the popular mayor of Austin, it's astonishing that he only got 51%. Sharp almost beat Dewhurst statewide. But far be it from me to put a damper on your dist 48 dreams... or dist 50 for that matter (Strama hasn't a prayer either). Just seems like a waste of time and money that could be better spent in more productive ways. Posted by: TM at May 1, 2004 01:04 PMTM, Not only did Sharp and Watson win District 48 in 2002, but Ron Kirk got 46% of the vote (higher than the statewide average). If an African-American left-of-center Senate candidate can do that well, in the face of massive outspending by his uber-Republican opponent, it's quite clear that District 48 is far from a Republican stronghold. It's up for grabs. The victory will go to the better candidate, and Kelly White is the better candidate. Posted by: Anaxagoras at May 2, 2004 12:15 AMPost a comment
