Hyperbole of the Day
By Byron LaMasters
"We see this time as the climax of the civil war of values that's been raging for 35 years. This is the Gettysburg. This is the D-Day, the Stalingrad. We must oppose those who have done so much to create the mess that we're in."
- Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family regarding his support for Patrick Toomey over Arlen Specter in the Republican Pennsylvania Primary for U.S. Senate.

If this is Stalingrad, then Dobson must be that guy Ed Harris played in "Enemy at the Gates".
I actually hope Toomey wins. I think we will have a better shot at beating an extremist in PA in November than we do Arlen Specter.
More like badly-mixed (and tragically ineffective) metaphor of the day:
* Neither Stalingrad nor D-Day were battles in anybody's Civil War.
* Stalingrad was a brutal (to both sides) siege. D-Day was a beachhead-based invasion. Gettysburg was basically a parry. Which sort of battle does he really want?
* While Gettysburg was a Civil War battle, the North's victory there was hardly a turning point; rather, had Lee been able to press up the Susquehanna to Harrisburg, he would have effectively cut the Union in half and all-but-guaranteed Southern victory in the West. All the Union victory guaranteed was that the War's status quo would continue; Grant's victory at Vicksburg the following day (July 4, 1863) was the REAL turning point of the war.
But then again, he's Dr. Dobson -- already so full of non-sequitors, one more hardly seems surprising.
Dude... is it just me, or is everyday D-Day for these guys?
Oh well, it's good to know that even on days I think are totally normal, they're ready, willing and able to pop a cap in my ass. That's vigilance. And that's what 'Murica is all about.
There used to be a (Republican) joke about how for Democrats, everyday is Tax Day (or Christmas, I can't remember which).
