More shockers from the Bush press conference

Financial Times: Bush seeks re-election on 'world peace' ticket
US President George W. Bush said on Tuesday he will campaign for re-election next year by arguing that "the world is more peaceful and more free under my leadership".
But, even as he did so, he conceded that "Iraq's a dangerous place" and shuffled back from his triumphant declaration on board the USS Abraham Lincoln seven months ago that America had achieved its mission in the Gulf.
Would it be trite or cliched to quote Orwell ("War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength") right about now?

Jim D,
How is that Orwellian? Do you deny that Iraq is a freer and less repressive place today than it was a year ago? There may be terrorist attacks, but at least the government isn't being run by a fascist dictator (seriously, by any meaningful definition of the word, the Baath party is (was) a fascist party) who routinely tortures, executes, and subjugates its citizens. Iraq isn't totally free of violence, yet, but "the world is more peaceful and more free under" Bush's leadership.

Dont know. How about those WMDs that have disappeared? Either they weren't there or they have been smuggled out undetected to terrorist groups/states. Either way bad news.
As for Iraq itself, I saw a poll that showed a significant percentage of the population (around 30) that said they would prefer to be under Saddam Hussein. Yikes. Certainly more than a few dead- enders or desperate Baathist hold outs.
