Austin American-Statesman Endorses Bill White for Governor

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Mon Feb 08, 2010 at 11:46 AM CST

Technically, it's just for the primary, but the Austin American-Statesman endorsement of Bill White in today's paper reads a lot like a general election endorsement to me:

White also brings a low-key, thoughtful approach that seems like just what Texas needs now. There's nothing like high-decibel rhetoric to get folks excited around election time. But today's problems — education, transportation, health care, jobs, a massive projected state budget shortfall, etc. — are best solved by thoughtful deliberation, not overheated rhetoric.

It's also not the time or place for know-it-all politicians who think they have all the solutions and can single-handedly put them in place.

[...]

We also find something comforting and confidence-inspiring in the sort of anti-charisma that White exudes. It's so, well, grown-up. It's also devoid of the unattractive overconfidence that many of today's politicians harbor as they promise us no-cost solutions to all of our high-dollar problems.

The whole endorsement is worth a read.

Interesting what it doesn't say (2.00 / 1)
The AAS endorsement doesn't even mention Shami, except to recommend that voters watch the White-Shami debate. Usually, their endorsements say something about the opposition, and why they are or aren't viable alternatives.

From the AAS:

"Bill White can be that governor and is the clear choice in the Democratic gubernatorial primary in which his prime challenger is Houston hair-care magnate Farouk Shami, a wealthy, self-funded candidate who has brought energy and an inspiring life story - but a total lack of anything that would prepare him to be governor - to the race."

They clearly said in their endorsement of White that they view Shami as unprepared to be Governor.
