HD 138: Democrat Kendra Yarbrough Camerena Files Against Corrupt Republican Dwayne Bohac

by: Phillip Martin, Progress Texas

Today, Democrat Kendra Yarbrough Camerena filed for the House District 138 race. Her campaign released the following statement:

Today, Kendra Yarbrough Camerena filed for House District 138. Her campaign released the following statement:

Kendra’s experience as an educator, parent, and concerned citizen has prepared her to bring balanced leadership back to Austin.

“It’s time for legislators to put aside partisan politics and get to work addressing the concerns and challenges of everyday Texans,” Yarbrough Camarena said.

“I tell my students all the time that they must listen carefully to understand a problem, Yarbrough Camarena continued.  “As I’ve met with voters, I’ve listened and heard their frustration with business as usual in Austin. As a State Representative, I’ll keep listening and I’ll stand up for the neighborhoods where we work and raise our families.”

Kendra Yarbrough Camarena is a life long resident of District 138 and is the daughter of former State Representative, the Honorable Ken Yarbrough. For the past seven years, Kendra has taught at Scarborough High School and Clifton Middle School in the Oak Forest area where Kendra grew up, and where she and her husband, Carlos, are raising their two children.

I had the great opportunity of meeting Kendra last night at a fundraising event at The Belmont. She is going to do an incredible job knocking on doors and connecting with voters one-on-one. She is young, energetic, a mother of two, a teacher -- and all of that keeps her grounded. She's someone who is running for office because she truly believes there is a duty, as a public servant, to improve the lives of the friends and neighbors around her.

Needless to say, she was very impressive, and will be a formiddable opponent for corrupt Republican Dwayne Bohac.

Bohac, remember, has a lot of scandals and corruption to answer for. From the Lone Star Project:

This will be one of the key races for Texas House Democrats in 2010. We will be writing much, much more on this race and in the coming months. For now -- learn more about Kendra at the resource pages below:

Kendra is a class act! (2.00 / 2)
She adds strength to the ticket, and will give Mr. Bohac a run for his money.

Run for his money?? (0.00 / 0)
Only if 35.49% is giving Dwayne a run.

Corrupt Moniker? (1.00 / 1)
Are we assuming all Dems are corrupt and dropping that moniker or is this candidate too new to have earned the distinction?

I'm not assuming anything (0.00 / 0)
I'm simply stating a fact that Dwayne Bohac is corrupt.

Litmus Test (0.00 / 0)
This saturday's Houston city elections will be a good barometer for Yarbrough. How well Lane Lewis fares in District A (which roughly parallels District 138) can tell her if she's a real contender or just spinning her wheels.

Why that one? (1.00 / 1)
I'm just curious, why you think a city election runoff is a good barometer? And how would the results of a runoff in a city council election indicate the strength of a State House race?

The circumstances for her race are going to be so unique -- as they are for each candidate and campaign. When you factor in how excellent Kendra is with how thoroughly horrible Dwayne Bohac is, then I'm reluctant to draw too close of a parallel for any race.

Sunday morning (0.00 / 0)
Only your hardcore voters turnout in city election runoffs, just like in a governor's year election. The results will be in Sunday morning to analyze. The comparison is fair, Lane is an excellent candidate who has worked hard. Brenda Stardig is a developer's puppet and is a hand picked lackey of Bohac. As mentioned before District A and District 138 fall along roughly similar lines. Contrarianism for its own sake cannot change that. Give or take the last 4 Democrats to run in 138 have gotten between 36% and 41% of the vote.

it'll be a good baseline (0.00 / 0)
and Lane has certainly plowed a lot of turf for Kendra.

You're right in that there will be a lot of useful information in the returns, but the fact that a solid challenger will take on an incredibly weakened opponent will be what puts her over the top.

I wouldn't base the 2010 results on tomorrow's results, but I am excited that Lane has organized and energized a base of volunteers and supporters that can transition to the 138 race easily.

I'd compare it to Austin's HD 47.  Strayhorn did well in some precincts in the district in the mayoral race, but Valinda Bolton is an excellent candidate that wins votes.  Having a strong candidate in 138 will be the same.

Democrats in HD 138 (1.00 / 1)
We can look at all kinds of results from the district -- not just candidates running exclusively in it or near it. For example -- and this is from memory -- but I remember being told that Adrian Garcia got 53% of the vote in that district.

Ultimately, there's lots of good reasons to be confident about Kendra's chances -- not only with numbers, but because she's a strong, committed candidate. She's going to run a terrific race, and I look forward to her defeating Bohac in eleven months.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

Disappointment (0.00 / 0)
Despite running a great campaign against a bad Repub, Lane Lewis has been defeated. This does not bode well for Kendra. While no Republican should go unopposed, the reality is crystal clear, more tough sledding ahead for a Dem running in 138.
