Margaret Gomez Receives 5 Public Safety Groups' Endorsements

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Wed Dec 09, 2009 at 10:00 PM CST

At her re-election campaign kickoff Monday night, Travis County Commissioner Margaret Gómez received the endorsement of five public safety unions. The endorsements for the four-term Democratic incumbent came from the Austin-Travis County EMS Employees Association PAC, Austin Police Association PAC, Travis County Sheriffs' Law Enforcement Association PAC, Travis County Sheriffs' Officers Association PAC, and Travis County Firefighters Association.

This early institutional support for Gomez over her Democratic primary challenger Raul Alvarez is an important marker that her campaign is active and playing for keeps without letting endorsements slip away to give any early credentials to her opponent.

While there are certainly issues with Gomez from her work on the Commission and board she serves on including CAMPO, Alvarez does not seem to be competing as aggressively as required at this stage to take on  the 16 year incumbent.

The endorsing organizations' statements are posted below the fold.

Brett Spicer, chairman, Travis County Sheriffs' Law Enforcement Association PAC: Commissioner Gomez has always worked to improve public safety in Travis County. She cares about protecting our communities and she has a record to prove it. She is an experienced leader on the Commissioners Court, and we are proud to endorse her re-election."

Millie Zapata, vice president, Austin-Travis County EMS Employees Association & PAC Board Member: "Commissioner Margaret Gomez understands that ambulances must be near the community they serve. EMS is not only serve the community as a public safety agency, we also are very involved with the public health of our citizens - and she understands that.  We support Margaret Gomez because she supports EMS."

Chris Perkins, chairman, Austin Police Association PAC: "Commissioner Gomez has been a long time supporter of public safety. She has never voted against public safety in harsh budget times, because she understands that the protection of the public comes first."

Jason Pack, president, Travis County Firefighters Association (Local 4583): "Commissioner Gomez has been engaged with the fire fighters and the department in a genuine effort to ensure that the people of southeast Travis County get the best possible ems and fire response. Her attention and support has truly help shape the ever improving delivery of public safety in Travis County."

Institutional support almost always goes to the incumbent. And unless the endorsements come with money, they mean little. This is going to be a close race, and it has barely even started.

Austin Police Assoc PAC and Austin/Travis EMS Employees PAC (0.00 / 0)
presented Commissioner Gomez with checks at the event.

The only recent successful campaign to defeat an incumbent county commissioner actually did get a lot of institutional support.

When Sarah Eckhardt defeated Karen Sonleitner in 2006, Eckhardt received the support of the Travis County Sheriffs' Law Enforcement Association. It was a significant role in her victory.

Commissioner Gomez has served on the County dais for 16 years! This is entirely TOO LONG!  Many citizens in Travis County have allowed the status quo to continue and it's time for a fresh objective perspective and NEW LEADERSHIP. Can anyone name ONE thing that Gomez has done for Pct 4?  What is her legacy other than getting a formal education on the tax payer's dime while serving as Commissioner.  She is a very nice lady, but we need  a change!

Let's not forget her last re-election efforts; her challenger had no formal campaign, yet Gomez was re-elected by less than 500 votes.

The ONLY endorsement that COUNTS is that of the Pct 4 voters.

New Leadership (0.00 / 0)
Commissioner Gomez has served more than 15 years as county commissioner. Precinct 4 has not seen many changes in the last 8 years. Her lack of leadership to Capital Metro shows that she needs to be replaced with someone who has fresh ideas and a strong voice of accountability. Her lack of leadership has denied Precinct 4 with many economic and educational opportunities for the community to grow compared to other parts of Travis County. Its time for a change, and for someone to listen to the communities' needs which has not been addressed in many years.
