SBOE-10: Lorenzo Sadun Withdraws from Race, Endorses Judy Jennings

by: Matt Glazer

Tue Dec 08, 2009 at 10:02 AM CST

In 2008, no Democrats ran for State Board of Education in district 10.  This year, we were poised to watch two qualified candidates go head to head in the primary.  Today, Lorenzo Sadun, the write in candidate against Mike McCaul in Congressional District 10 and long time Travis County Democrat, announced he was not running for the office and throwing his support immediately behind Dr. Judy Jennings.

The e-mail he sent out was forwarded to me in full:

Dear friends,

I have decided not to file as a candidate for State Board of Education. The only office that I will be seeking this year is Democratic Precinct Chair in Travis County Precinct 214.

In part, this decision is for personal reasons, recognizing the strain that the campaign is placing on my work and on my family. A bigger factor, however, is my primary opponent,  Dr. Judy Jennings. As I have come to know Judy better and better on the campaign trail, I have come to respect and admire her commitment to quality public education, her understanding of educational issues, and her discipline and determination. I have also watched her grow as a candidate. There is a learning curve to being a candidate, and Judy picks things up very quickly. Much as I would like to serve on the SBOE, I cannot allow my own ambition to stand in the way of Judy's bringing necessary change to a dysfunctional board. Going forward, she has my full support.

I owe a debt of gratitude to all of you for your support and encouragement over the last six months. I also owe a debt of money to those of you who contributed financially to the campaign, since we have a lot of unspent funds! In a few weeks, after all the bills are paid, I will partially return contributions in proportion to how much was given. Please consider redirecting  this refund to Judy Jenning's campaign.

Democratically yours,

Lorenzo Sadun

This is a classy decision by Sadun. Nobody can argue Sadun has the interests of the party at heart and his early decision will allow Democrats to get behind Jennings who is running against Republican Cynthia Dunbar.  For more information about how bad Dunbar is, visit Jennings page about SBOE here.

Thanks for the Hard Work, Lorenzo! (4.33 / 3)
I can say that, with SBOE 10 the election that Democrats have the best chance of taking over from Republicans, I fully appreciate the time and effort you have put in.

Yes, thanks Lorenzo! (5.00 / 1)
As a retired teacher, I was so happy when you stepped up to run for the SBOE. You put in a lot of work into this, and now you are clearly  putting the interests of the party first by withdrawing so that Democrats can unite behind Judy Jennings. We can win this if Democrats are united!

Statement from Judy Jennings campaign thanking Dr. Sadun (5.00 / 2)
I can't adequately express how grateful I am to Lorenzo Sadun for putting our common goal of bringing change to the State Board of Education ahead of his desire to serve on the board himself. Dr. Sadun would make an able, brilliant board member in his own right. In receiving his approval of my candidacy, I feel I have measured up to a high standard, indeed.

Dr. Sadun and I share the outrage of many voters that our current representative on the State Board of Education is someone who calls public education "a subtly deceptive tool of perversion. This statement flies in the face of the board's duty to support and guide our Texas public schools.  As of today, Dr. Sadun and I are working together to end Cynthia Dunbar's career on the State Board of Education.

I have asked Dr. Sadun to advise me on both academics and on the campaign. His credentials as a scientist are of the first rank, and as he has pointed out numerous times as a candidate, the area of the curriculum that will be acted upon by the State Board in 2011 is science. We will need Dr. Sadun's expertise in this area along with that of other scientists and educators for the State Board of Education to live up to its responsibility to guide Texas's public schools in preparing today's students for a successful future.

The other area where I have asked Dr. Sadun to advise me is the campaign. There are only 15 State Board of Educations members as opposed to 32 members of Congress and 31 State Senators. Thus each of the SBOE members represents more than twice as many constituents as a State Senator or member of Congress. The district I am running in is vast. Dr. Sadun knows so many people -- Democrats, independents and Republican -- from his 2004 campaign for Congress and his candidacy for the state board that his guidance will be invaluable to the success of this effort over the next eleven months.

I am so very happy to be working with Dr. Sadun rather than to be competing against him. He was a formidable opponent and is now a formidable ally. This is good news for the Democratic Party, the voters of District 10 and the schoolchildren of Texas.

Now it looks like Dunbar is out (0.00 / 0)
Via Kimberly Reeves at Quorum Report:
APPEARS DUNBAR WILL NOT SEEK RE-ELECTION TO SBOE

SREC member Brian Russell says she recruited him to run for her open seat.

Republican Cynthia Dunbar, a lightning rod for controversy on the State Board of Education for her ultra-conservative views, appears to have told supporters she will not run for a second term on the board and likely will be replaced on the ballot by Austin intellectual property attorney Brian Russell, who currently serves on the State Republican Executive Committee.

SBOE district 10 in 2008 (0.00 / 0)
Nobody ran for SBOE 10 in 2008.  I think you mean 2006?

yea, 2006 (0.00 / 0)
i'm sure he meant to say 2006. and he did say "no democrat", not "nobody". in fact, voters had 2 chances in 2006 to vote against Cynthia Dunbar, once in the primary against another moderate Rep opponent and once in the general against a Libertarian opponent. they'll have the same number of chances to vote against her in 2010- once in the primary and once in the general. but in 2010 in the general she'll have a Dem opponent.

whlie talking about editing mistakes (0.00 / 0)
while on the subject of editing mistakes, can someone please fix the wording on the poll question?:

"Among the following candidates, who you vote for in the Democratic primary for Governor?"

that's annoying.
