Kinky Friedman Announcement Delayed

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Mon Dec 07, 2009 at 01:37 PM CST

Friday's pronouncement that today would be the day for some news from gubernatorial hopeful Kinky Friedman looks to have gotten ahead of itself. Monday is hear and the only news is the news that there will not be any news for at least a couple more days as Kinky and his campaign staff complete their conversations on what he plans to do next.

Jason Embry at the Statesman has the campaign's statement.

"The only announcement today is that we have no announcement. Kinky has invested 7 months and a lot of money in this race and is not going to rush a decision that will so significantly impact the ticket. He is taking a few more days to visit with his supporters and friends. Kinky also wants to visit with both Mr. Shami and Mayor White before making a final decision. We will keep our supporters and the media advised once a decision has been reached."

If Kinky does indeed leave the Governor's race, it will be interesting to see if he also issues a farewell endorsement of White or Shami and if he continues his campaign downballot or exits the primary entirely.

Of note Felix Alvarado is planning on making it official by filing for Governor today in the Democratic primary. That is, of course, assuming that his filling fee won't bounce this time.

Ohhh Kinky (0.00 / 0)
What a wonderful birthday present for me..not to have to hear about Kinky's plans for a new fragrance or hip hop collective.

Get real (3.00 / 1)
Kinky needs to move his dog and pony show on down the road we have a real chance of taking back some statewide offices and we need strength an the top of the ticket for this not a snake oil salesman.

Go away kinky (2.20 / 5)
Geez. what a frickin joke. He is an embarrassment to the party. He is NOT a Democrat and he is nothing but a fool who got only 9% of the vote in 2006.

A real idiot of a candidate. He needs to move on.

What a surprise (2.00 / 1)
Kinky Friedman doesn't have his act together.
I'm pretty funny, and have a lot of friends in Austin, too. Maybe I'll go down and file for land commish tomorrow. Or maybe I won't. Maybe I'll go vote for Lamar Smith! Maverick-y!

While I don't think that Kinky is a serious candidate (2.00 / 2)
and it would be a disaster if he somehow won the nomination, part of me would like to see him remain in the race, for no other reason than to up the interest factor in the Democratic nomination.  There's going to be a lot of focus as it is on the mudfight between Kaybee and Goodhair, and having a compelling battle for the Democratic nomination last year seems to have done a lot to energize public interest in our eventual nominee.

Kinky would have to be a serious candidate first (0.00 / 0)
Unless he somehow piggybacks on uninformed primary voters who just like the joking, he's gonna have to start acting like a serious candidate first to be a real challenge.  People remember what happened in 2006, he fell far short, and he hasn't shown any growth since 2006.

"I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually."- James A. Baldwin

Agree primary can be energizing, but (0.00 / 0)
I think with Farouk Shami spending millions of his own money, and Hank Gilbert's endorsement of him, there is going to be interest and competition in the primary already even though Bill White is the frontrunner and likely nominee.

KBH is toast (0.00 / 0)
A contested and energetic Democratic primary race kills off most of the possible cross over Democratic voters she needed to beat Perry. Not enough independent voters left in play to save her primary election bid over Perry's Texas Taliban base regardless of what Kinky does.

Kinky is a joke (0.00 / 0)
Kinky Friedman is Rick Perry with a cigar.

In the 80's Kinky used to tell racist jokes, but in the 2006 campaign, it was no joke when he compared the Katrina evacuees to "crackheads and thugs". Why any Democrat would consider voting for him is beyond me.  Among other things, he voted for George W. Bush, thinks we should build a fence on the border, supports school prayer & posting the Ten Commandments in Texas classrooms, & didn't vote on an ammendment to the Texas constitution which outlawed gay marriages.  He ran as a Republican for JP in 1986.

Bill White is a popular Democrat with a big campaign fund who  has a real chance of winning this.

Be grateful there isn't an Independent candidate.... (0.00 / 0)
That may be next in Tricky Ricky's bag of tricks...
