Bill White's Announcement Video and Statement on Running for Texas Governor

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Fri Dec 04, 2009 at 01:20 PM CST

From ABC 13 Houston, Bill White's announcement on video regarding his seeking the office of Texas Governor.

The official press statement from the White campaign.

Today, after listening to thousands of Texans from all backgrounds, Bill White filed to run for Governor, pledging to fight for Texas' future.

"I am proud of the people of Texas, and as Governor I will move us forward as America's great state of opportunity," White said. "I'll be a Governor who challenges Texans to lead, not leave, the United States."

White highlighted ways of creating new jobs with businesses small and large across the state. He emphasized that Texas could not be its best with skyrocketing insurance and electric rates and college tuition that increases faster than the incomes of Texans.

The son of San Antonio school teachers, White vowed to focus on improving educational achievement in K-12 grade levels, improving high school graduation rates, and reducing the costs of college.

White, a successful businessman, was first elected as Houston Mayor in 2003 and was twice re-elected with margins averaging 88%. He has been hailed as a strong leader and a problem-solver, with the Houston Chronicle noting that he has "deftly steered Houston through fiscal and tropical storms."

During White's administration, Houston led the nation's cities in job growth, adding more jobs than 16 states combined. At the same time, he cut property tax rates five years in a row. After Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ike, Bill White mobilized an effective disaster response including first responders, businesses and churches.

"I don't have the polish of career politicians. But as a businessman and Mayor I know how to be accountable for results, not just rhetoric. I have a track record of bringing people together to get things done," White said. "That's what Texas needs now."

Last December, White launched a U.S. Senate campaign that in 11 months attracted more than 1500 volunteers, more than 5500 contributors, and more than $6.5 million. He has visited 70 Texas counties to date.

Update: And now the official campaign video from Bill White.

Just a note (0.00 / 0)
I don't think the ABC video is the full speech.  Then again, it's the only one we have.

Uhm, Snooks? (0.00 / 0)

What does Governor of Texas have to do with international terrorism and your Bill Ayers conspiracy ties? Are there ANY actions or positions that he took in 6 years as an elected official that suggest that there is any merit to your "smoking gun rant"?

Frankly, I think Governor Perry's trip to Israel had nothing to do with being Governor of Texas apart from pandering. We really need a Governor who will build up the state, not his frequent flier miles.

Once again truth prevails on BOR (0.00 / 0)
The Houston Chronicle ran the story. But BOR once again doesn't want truth. It prefers to paint the pretty picture. Which isn't pretty.   By your friends, and your employers, you shall be known. That includes politicians. Particularly politicians. Association with terrorists is association with terrorists. Directly or indirectly.

Then I'm sure (0.00 / 0)
That if I worked hard enough, I could associate you with terrorists.  Unfortunately, there are enough terrorists in the world and they are such a common topic, nowadays, that I can do it.

Hell, I can do it with me.  I have Muslim friends, and I'm sure one of them is connected to some crazy guy who has terrorist sympathies.  Oh No!

Or, let's stretch the string as far as it goes.  Let's say you're a fan of Thomas Jefferson.  Thomas Jefferson approved of the Original Terrorism that we know as the French Reign of Terror.  Ok, now most American patriots are associated with terrorists.  We're all screwed, aren't we?
(Hey, I know those terrorists aren't quite like the ones we have today, but the etymology is from the same stuff.  And I really think Thomas Jefferson was ok with Terrorism as a methodology.)

Come on Snooks, really?  I'm commenting a lot on this because I'm in a terrorism and response class with someone who is probably one of the top terrorism-response experts in the world.  And this is one of the most ridiculous points you have tried to argue here.

And just who is this expert? (0.00 / 0)
I'm commenting a lot on this because I'm in a terrorism and response class with someone who is probably one of the top terrorism-response experts in the world.

________________

Well just who is this expert? One of my oldest friends was with the State Department for 25 years. There are people at the State Department, not the "presidential appointees" who come and go, who have been very disturbed over the "double standard" applied to Issam Fares and Hezbollah and everyone connected to Issam Fares. And that includes the Bushes.

An IDF Guy (0.00 / 0)
A guy named Elliot Chodoff. He is a reserve officer now with the Israeli Defense Forces who still does a lot of work with them on terrorism issues.

Absolutely amazing class.  I'm sure he would have a problem with Hezbollah apologists, but I don't think it would bother him if someone was employed by an apologist.  You just get on a slippery slope that makes everyone an accomplice that way.

Why don't you ask him? (0.00 / 0)
I would be interested to know what he says instead of what you think he would say.

I've had to deal with Gavin de Becker's office in two stalking situations. One of the protocols is to "disengage" and that includes even the casual acquaintances of the stalker. Something I didn't understand until the second time I didn't follow the protocol.

He is not an expert on terrorism per se but he is an expert on security and developed the threat assessment system the Secret Service and most of the federal law enforcement agencies use.

And my real point (0.00 / 0)
My point is that Texas is filled with pro-military and at this point anti-Bush Republicans and Bill White will be facing a pro-military and anti-Bush candidate for governor, unless all the Democrats vote in the Republican primary for Kay Bailey Hutchison, and among the tricks up the sleeve of Slick Rick is Sarah Palin who all those Republicans just love and they would love to tie the Democratic candidate to terrorism. And will. And unfortunately the story is there. And of course they can use Sarah Palin to raise the question. The military types love her. As everyone saw when she hit Ft. Hood. So Rick Perry can sort of kind of distance himself from it.

Really? (0.00 / 0)
The military types love her.

She's enjoying a celebrity frenzy. I read in the Dallas News this morning that her mother and father were traveling with her on the "bus," and her mother said that she (her mother) hadn't even read "the book"...that no one had even given her a copy of it.

Her "Warhol Moment" certainly is lasting longer than 15 minutes... (0.00 / 0)
She has what you call a base. Might not be enough to support her in another run for national office but it's a base and growing. Not only do the Backwoods Kens love her the other Backwoods Barbies love her.  Don't discount her impact. Or her influence.

A lot of Republicans really don't like the "war on terror" and see it finally for what it is and always has been which is a "war for oil" and they don't like the Bushes but, well, by golly, we're in it like Vietnam so let's turn Iraq and Afghanistan into a parking lot and be home by Christmas. After all, well, there is all that oil. And the natural gas. And well, after all, it's really ours. Says so somewhere. If not the Bible, well, maybe in the Constitution. Probably the Bible. After all, they're all Muslims. They shouldn't have the oil. Or the natural gas.

The way they think. If you can call it thinking. And she plays real well with them. She's "one of them."

[ Parent ]
I don't discount her (0.00 / 0)
She definitely has that following. But then so do a lot of bizarre characters. The Muslim hating e-mails are circulating. Sister Sarah will save us all.
